This is the first volume in a new series of Hypogean Archaeology
aiming to promote the archaeological, architectonical,
speleological and historical investigation of artificial cavities.
This volume covers the first 55 index cards relating to the
underground works registered in the Italian regions of Lombardy,
Piedmont and Tusacany. Intended as an initial contribution to the
classification and knowledge of artifical cavities, the cadastre
includes a "Classification of artificial cavities by typology,"
essential for an understanding of the vast range of underground
cavities.
This fourth volume in a series devoted to medieval topography looks

their location, history, date, their walls, gateways and other

This collection of thematic chapters derives from
inter-disciplinary research on the subject of Orte (Viterbo, Italy)
from the earliest Etruscan occupation to the First Crusade in 1099.
Written by scholars who have been heavily involved in excavations
and conservation projects in Orte from the 1960s to 2003, the
chapters examine the history and archaeology of the town in
general, hydraulic systems, cemeteries, ceramics, metal and glass
finds, bricks and brick-stamps and other finds. Italian text.
Results of research into fortified and unfortified settlements (
castra and Villae ) in a specific area of Umbria - Alta valle del
Tevere. Italian text.
Between 1988 and 2000 a pot-holing project undertook an underground
survey of the city of Tarquinia in Italy. This report comprises a
catalogue of the man-made cavities that it found along with a
discussion of methodology and an analysis of its findings from the
Etruscan, Roman and medieval periods. The different types of
man-made cavities included caves and mines, structures for
conducting, holding, storing and conserving water, those for the
disposal of water or sewerage, and those serving religious (crypts,
catacombs etc), civil and military functions.
In this study Stefano del Lungo provides a detailed, year-by-year
account of the history of Muslim presence in central and northern
Tyrrhenian Sea in the High Middle Ages, 8th to 10th century. The
final chapters discuss the town of Noba Leopolis in some detail,
followed by a general synthesis of the history of Muslim occupation
and of the topographical research upon which this study is based.
