Spanning over 250 years of history, Black Ink traces black
literature in America from Frederick Douglass to Ta-Nehisi Coates
in this "breathtaking anthology celebrating the power of the
written word to forge change" (O, The Oprah Magazine).Throughout
American history black people are the only group of people to have
been forbidden by law to learn to read. This expansive collection
seeks to shed light on that injustice, putting some of America's
most cherished voices in a conversation in one magnificent volume
that presents reading as an act of resistance. Organized into three
sections--the Peril, the Power, and the Pleasure--and featuring a
vast array of contributors both classic and contemporary, Black Ink
presents the brilliant diversity of black thought in America while
solidifying the importance of these writers within the greater
context of the American literary tradition. "This electric and
electrifying collection of voices serves to open a much-needed
window onto the freedom struggle of black literature. It's a
marvel, and a genuine gift for readers everywhere" (Wil Haygood,
author of The Butler: A Witness to History). Contributors include:
Frederick Douglass, Solomon Northup, Booker T. Washington, W.E.B.
Du Bois, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, James Baldwin,
Malcolm X, Maya Angelou, Martin Luther King, Jr., Toni Morrison,
Walter Dean Myers, Stokely Carmichael [Kwame Ture], Alice Walker,
Jamaica Kincaid, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Terry McMillan, Junot
Diaz, Edwidge Danticat, Colson Whitehead, Marlon James, Roxane Gay,
Ta-Nehisi Coates, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Colson Whitehead.
The anthology features a bonus in-depth interview with President
Barack Obama.
The World at Your Table features transporting tablescapes set with
evocative, eye-catching, and exotic items this adventurous spirit
has gathered over the years. To enliven her tabletops, Stokes
creates experiences in miniature using china, glassware, linens,
candlesticks, and cutlery from such widely different destinations
as Japan, Cartagena, Budapest, and London. Each conjures the spirit
of a particular place: Palm Beach s tropical lushness, Provence s
remarkable charm, Portugal s artisanal refinement, and so much
more. By pairing her travel photography with the featured tables,
she illustrates how incorporating the treasures collected on one s
travels can capture, express, and spark fresh memories at home.
Throughout, Stokes discusses the design principles that inform her
choices from color palettes to indigenous materials. There is also
a section on storage. This enchanting tabletop survey is for those
who love design, entertaining, and travel and the idea of
incorporating beloved things purchased from far and wide into
impressionistic tabletops.
"Song for My Father" is a daughter's memoir of her father, Charles
M. Stokes, a prominent African-American member of the National
Republican Party. Known as "Stokey," he was born just forty years
after the abolition of slavery. But by the time he became a pioneer
in the fields of law, legislation, and politics -- during the
turbulent and transformative 1960s and 70s -- contemporary
associations of the GOP with the "party of Lincoln" had faded.
Stokes's choice to remain a Republican against the tide of black
Democratic political loyalty took courage. He would live to become
Seattle's first black state legislator and serve as Washington
State's first African-American district court judge.
With "Song for My Father," Ms. Stokes pays tribute to a man
whose love for his country, his family, and his people made a world
of difference for generations to come. Stokes's life is a
compelling example of what American Dreams are made of.
From the author of Daily Cornbread, Seven Soulful Secrets will motivate women to become not just better than they are but the best they can be.

In seven wonderfully crafted chapters, Stokes Oliver reveals her soulful secrets in a simple but potent acronym that spells PURPOSE.
•Purpose: plan, persevere, and follow your own personal mission
•Ultimacy: release your best, “ultimate” self
•Relaxation: reduce stress and incorporate daily self-care into your routine
•Positivity: claim the joy in your life and celebrate yourself
•Optimum health: make the commitment to self-improvement, health, and fitness
•Spirituality: develop and maintain a connection to God/Spirit
•Esteem: boost your self-esteem and create healthy relationships
At once a practical how-to book and a spiritual guide, Seven Soulful Secrets speaks directly to the African American women who embraced Daily Cornbread and to all women eager to live a life that is authentic, vibrant, and fulfilling.
Heart & Soul founding editor Stephanie Stokes Oliver shows African American women how to soothe the soul, satisfy the mind, and revive the body 365 days a year.
Written in an affirming style that is prescriptive but never preachy, fun but not frivolous, Daily Cornbread is a day-by-day compendium of Oliver’s creative ideas for leading an enjoyable and fulfilling life. On January 2, for example, Oliver suggests taking time out to "get happy" (do something that makes you happy an hour a day); to schedule a personal retreat; and to develop a strategic plan for the upcoming year.
Reminiscent of Sarah Ban Breathnach’s Simple Abundance and Iyanla Vanzant’s Acts of Faith: Daily Meditations for People of Color, but with a special emphasis on nurturing the body as well as the mind, Daily Cornbread shows African American women how to make each day better.
