Bone Mechanics Handbook (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Stephen C. Cowin Bone Mechanics Handbook (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Stephen C. Cowin
R5,899 Discovery Miles 58 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This second edition of the Bone Mechanics Handbook summarizes the current understanding of bone mechanics with comprehensive coverage of the histology, physiology, and the cell and molecular biology of the bone. It is updated with the most recent advances on mechanical properties of the bone, most notably of cancellous bone, and the streaming potentials in the bone, which reflect the realization of the importance of fluid movement in bone tissue.

Continuum Mechanics of Anisotropic Materials (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Stephen C. Cowin Continuum Mechanics of Anisotropic Materials (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Stephen C. Cowin
R2,887 Discovery Miles 28 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Continuum Mechanics of Anisotropic Materials(CMAM) presents an entirely new and unique development of material anisotropy in the context of an appropriate selection and organization of continuum mechanics topics. These features will distinguish this continuum mechanics book from other books on this subject. Textbooks on continuum mechanics are widely employed in engineering education, however, none of them deal specifically with anisotropy in materials. For the audience of Biomedical, Chemical and Civil Engineering students, these materials will be dealt with more frequently and greater accuracy in their analysis will be desired. Continuum Mechanics of Anisotropic Materials' author has been a leader in the field of developing new approaches for the understanding of anisotropic materials.

IUTAM Symposium on Physicochemical and Electromechanical, Interactions in Porous Media (Paperback, 2005): Jacques Huyghe, Peter... IUTAM Symposium on Physicochemical and Electromechanical, Interactions in Porous Media (Paperback, 2005)
Jacques Huyghe, Peter A. C. Raats, Stephen C. Cowin
R4,590 Discovery Miles 45 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the last decades, new experimental and numerical techniques have taken many advanced features of porous media mechanics down to practical engineering applications. This happened in areas that sometimes were not even suspected to be open to engineering ideas at all. The challenge that often faces engineers in the field of geomechanics, biomechanics, rheology and materials science is the translation of ideas existing in one field to solutions in the other. The purpose of the IUTAM symposium from which this proceedings volume has been compiled was to dive deep into the mechanics of those porous media that involve mechanics and chemistry, mechanics and electromagnetism, mechanics and thermal fluctuations of mechanics and biology. The different sections have purposely not been formed according to field interest, but on the basis of the physics involved.

Tissue Mechanics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2007): Stephen C. Cowin, Stephen B. Doty Tissue Mechanics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2007)
Stephen C. Cowin, Stephen B. Doty
R2,927 Discovery Miles 29 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The structures of living tissues are continually changing due to growth and response to the tissue environment, including the mechanical environment. "Tissue Mechanics" is an in-depth look at the mechanics of tissues. "Tissue Mechanics" describes the nature of the composite components of a tissue, the cellular processes that produce these constituents, the assembly of the constituents into a hierarchical structure, and the behavior of the tissue's composite structure in the adaptation to its mechanical environment.

Organized as a textbook for the student needing to acquire the core competencies, "Tissue Mechanics" will meet the demands of advanced undergraduate or graduate coursework in Biomedical Engineering, as well as, Chemical, Civil, and Mechanical Engineering.

Key features:

Detailed Illustrations

Example problems, including problems at the end of sections

A separate solutions manual available for course instructors

A website (http: //tissue-mechanics.com/) that has been established to provide supplemental material for the book, including downloadable additional chapters on specific tissues, downloadable PowerPoint presentations of all the book's chapters, and additional exercises and examples for the existing chapters.

Cardiovascular Soft Tissue Mechanics (Hardcover): Stephen C. Cowin, Jay D. Humphrey Cardiovascular Soft Tissue Mechanics (Hardcover)
Stephen C. Cowin, Jay D. Humphrey
R3,038 Discovery Miles 30 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The seven papers of this volume present a glimpse into current research on soft tissue mechanics as well as some future directions. The seven papers concern tissues within the cardiovascular system: three focus on arteries, three on the heart, and one on biaxial testing of planar tissues such as heart valves. Given that cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the developed world, the importance of such research is clear.

There are notable common features of the seven papers. First, most of the proposed constitutive relations are motivated directly by data on the underlying microstructure, and especially the orientations of a structurally important protein (collagen) that forms as undulated cross-linked fibers. Another feature of most of the papers is the consideration of the fact that both arteries and the heart contain muscle and that there is a need to quantify the so-called active (contractile) response in addition to the passive (non-contractile) response. Such relations must not only be structurally motivated, they must ultimately include the kinetics of calcium transport in the muscle. Constitutive relations for active behavior are discussed in the majority of the papers. The growth and remodeling of cardiovascular tissues is another common feature of the papers. Over the last twenty years, separate advances in biochemistry, cell biology, genetic engineering, and biomechanics have focused attention on the ubiquitous role of growth and remodeling of tissues. This volume should be of interest to cardiovascular researchers in particular, and to bioengineers and biomechanics soft tissue researchers in general.

Russian Doll Poroelasticity (Paperback): Gaffar Gailani, Stephen C. Cowin, Luis Cardoso Russian Doll Poroelasticity (Paperback)
Gaffar Gailani, Stephen C. Cowin, Luis Cardoso
R1,572 Discovery Miles 15 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents in depth analysis for three interconnected problems in bone poroelasticity. In the first problem an analytical solution for a porous cylindrical annular disk under unconfined compression is developed. In the second problem an experimental technique for isolation and loading the osteons is presented. The experimental results are combined with the analytical results that obtained for the cylindrical porous disk to estimate the permeability and the poroelastic properties of a single osteon. In the last problem a new model for fluid transport in bone tissues is presented. Unlike previous models, this model adopts a theory of nested porosity in bones. The flow between two levels of porosity is being estimated in this model. This work gives insight into bone mechanotransduction, microgravity and fluid and waste transports in bones.
