Between 1997 and 2006, countless comic strips poured out of cartoonist Stephen Emond's room in the shape of "STEVERINO!," the tale of a sad-sack hopeless romantic and his quest for that special anyone. "STEVERINO!" was printed and sent out as a self-published 25 page book each month and eventually went on to gain praise and correspondance from syndicate editors, win national prizes, and a earned a space in local Connecticut shoreline newspapers. Read this book and see the mountains of effort that go into shaping a series and perfecting an idea. From what works to what doesn't, from rejection letters to editor feedback and the applications of that feedback, documented here is the true evolution of a cartoonist! Emond is the author of EMO BOY and HAPPYFACE, and as those books and STEVERINO! will show, he lays it all out in the open in his intensely personal works. Witness a decade of heart and devotion, the rise and fall of STEVERINO.
Winter Town follows two childhood best friends who learn that growing up means growing apart. This is written from both points of views Every winter, Evan looks forward to a visit from Lucy, a childhood pal who moved away after her parent's divorce. But when Lucy arrives this year, she's changed. The 'girl next door' has chopped dyed black hair, a nose stud and a scowl. But even though Lucy's changed, Evan and Lucy connect again. And this time, Evan falls in love. Lucy has secrets. She doesn't tell Evan about her mother's new abusive boyfriend, her own violent boyfriend and the fights that got her kicked out of her house. She feels guilty and starts to resent Evan's picture perfect (boring) life. She knows Evan won't change and Lucy knows she must break his heart and move on. The next winter, after transferring to an art college against his father's wishes, Evan sees Lucy again. And this time, they know the timing is right. This unique story features gorgeous black-and-white illustrations throughout (comic strips, spot art, chapter heads, etc.).
This is a story about a dorky teenage boy who reinvents himself after moving to a new town. He slaps on a grin, smiles through his awkwardness and becomes... HAPPYFACE! Enter Happyface's journal and get a peek into the life of a shy, artistic boy as he evolves from class nerd to class clown. See the world through his hilariously self-deprecating eyes as he learns to shed his comic-book-loving, computer-game playing ways. Join him as he makes new friends, tries to hide from his messy past, forgives the people who have hurt him most, and ultimately learns to face the world with a genuine smile. With its candid portrayal of dysfunctional family issues, low self-esteem, and dealing with loss, Happyface offers a refreshingly authentic teen boy voice through a unique and funny combination of text and fully integrated art.
