Tobegintounderstandthisinformationwenowrelyonstatisticalanalysistoaidinourselection ofthefruitfromthetree. However,thisoftentakesusonajourneyintoanewfieldforwhichweare notyetprepared. SamuelJohnson(1709-1784)foreshadowedthedilemmawewouldfaceand characterizeditasfollows:"Knowledgeisoftwokinds. Weknowasubjectourselves,orweknow wherewecanfindinformationonit. "Itisforthelatterthatweroutinelyturntotheliterature. The rateofgrowthoftheliteratureparallelsthatofsequencingdataandthearraydataplacingan almostimpossibletaskbeforeeachinvestigator.
