This volume examines recent developments in the use of intelligent
materials and systems for drug delivery. Controlled release
technology is moving from being a simple carrier of active agents
to becoming a powerful and flexible method that permits subtle
modulation of the delivery profile based on the needs of the
biological host. The chapters collected here cover recent advances
in materials with responsive properties, novel concepts in
controlled release technology, new applications, and
microanalytical techniques for rapid and accurate measurements of
small samples.
The progress in device technologies are surveyed in this volume.

circuits. Schottky-barrier arrays in Si and Si-Ge alloys for
infrared imaging, III-V quantum-well detector structures operated

In this volume, Stephen M. Gardiner and David A. Weisbach present
arguments for and against the relevance of ethics to global climate
policy. Gardiner argues that climate change is fundamentally an
ethical issue, since it is an early instance of a distinctive
challenge to ethical action (the perfect moral storm), and ethical
concerns (such as with justice, rights, political legitimacy,
community and humanity's relationship to nature) are at the heart
of many of the decisions that need to be made. Consequently,
climate policy that ignores ethics is at risk of "solving " the
wrong problem, perhaps even to the extreme of endorsing forms of
climate extortion. This is especially true of policy based on
narrow forms of economic self-interest. By contrast, Weisbach
argues that existing ethical theories are not well suited to
addressing climate change. As applied to climate change, existing
ethical theories suffer from internal logical problems and suggest
infeasible strategies. Rather than following failed theories or
waiting indefinitely for new and better ones, Weisbach argues that
central motivation for climate policy is straightforward: it is in
their common interest for people and nations to agree to policies
that dramatically reduce emissions to prevent terrible harms.
From the headlines of local newspapers to the coverage of major
media outlets, scenes of war, natural disaster, political
revolution and ethnic repression greet readers and viewers at every
turn. What we often fail to grasp, however, despite numerous
treatments of events is the deep meaning and broader significance
of crisis and disaster. The complexity and texture of these
situations are most evident in the broader personal stories of
those whom the events impact most intimately. Oral history, with
its focus on listening and collaborative creation with
participants, has emerged as a forceful approach to exploring the
human experience of crisis. Despite the recent growth of crisis
oral history fieldwork, there has been little formal discussion of
the process and meaning of utilizing oral history in these
environments. Oral history research takes on special dimensions
when working in highly charged situations often in close proximity
to traumatic events. The emergent inclination for oral historians
to respond to document crisis calls for a shared conversation among
scholars as to what we have learned from crisis work so far. This
dialogue, at the heart of this collection of oral history excerpts
and essays, reveals new layers of the work of the oral historian.
From the perspective of crisis and disaster oral history, the book
addresses both the ways in which we think about the craft of oral
hsitory, and the manner in which we use it. The book presents
excerpts from oral histories done after twelve world crises,
followed by critical analyses by the interviewers. Additional
analytical chapters set the interviews in the contexts of
pyschoanalysis and oral history methodology.

images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to

Practical Micromechanics of Composite Materials provides an
accessible treatment of micromechanical theories for the analysis

micromechanics problems, the book features an array of illustrative

empower readers to enhance and create new functionality tailored to
their needs, and the book and code highly complement one another.

describe how to obtain effective anisotropic properties of a
unidirectional composite (ply) via micromechanics and multiscale
analysis. Calculation of local fields via mechanical and thermal
strain concentration tensors is presented in a unified way across
several micromechanics theories. The importance of these local
fields is demonstrated through the determination of consistent
Margins of Safety (MoS) and failure envelopes for thermal and
mechanical loading. Finally, micromechanics-based multiscale
progressive damage is discussed and implemented in the accompanying
MATLAB code.
