Mapping the Journey - Case Studies in Strategy and Action toward Sustainable Development (Paperback, illustrated edition):... Mapping the Journey - Case Studies in Strategy and Action toward Sustainable Development (Paperback, illustrated edition)
Lorinda R. Rowledge, Russell Barton, Kevin Brady, James Fava, Cynthia Figge, …
R1,076 Discovery Miles 10 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This illuminating new book presents a series of in-depth case studies from around the world based on numerous personal interviews with organizational leaders and focusing on their journey towards sustainability. The aim is to provide visions of a more sustainable future, and shed light on the path, milestones and solutions - in particular the management processes these organizations employed - to provide a reliable compass that others can follow. Although each organization must take steps to fit its particular circumstance, business conditions and culture, Mapping the Journey proves that valuable lessons can be learned by setting aside critique as to where these organizations may yet make progress and instead focusing on the guidelines, targets, measures of success, tools and techniques and valuable wisdom about how pioneer organisations are travelling toward a prosperous, sustainable future. Each organization included has crafted its own unique strategic responses to an identified need for increased sustainability. While none can be said to have reached the end-point of a sustainable development strategy, all have found that, by addressing the challenge of sustainable industrial practices, they have found innovative solutions, new opportunities for revenue generation, better relationships with customers, new business and product opportunities and a boost to morale from the executive ranks to front-line employees. Mapping the Journey examines both public and private organizations worldwide: SJ Rail of Sweden; Sony Corporation; SC Johnson; TransAlta Corporation; Patagonia; Henkel; Volvo; ASG; Interface Flooring Systems; Suncor; DaimlerChrysler; AssiDoman; Germany's Centre for Technology Assessment and the Dutch National Environmental Policy Plan. These case studies provide an inspiring framework of effective processes for defining a sustainable development strategy and transforming it successfully into actions and results.

Indigenous Peoples, Consent and Rights - Troubling Subjects (Paperback): Stephen Young Indigenous Peoples, Consent and Rights - Troubling Subjects (Paperback)
Stephen Young
R1,303 Discovery Miles 13 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Analysing how Indigenous Peoples come to be identifiable as bearers of human rights, this book considers how individuals and communities claim the right of free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) as Indigenous peoples. The basic notion of FPIC is that states should seek Indigenous peoples' consent before taking actions that will have an impact on them, their territories or their livelihoods. FPIC is an important development for Indigenous peoples, their advocates and supporters because one might assume that, where states recognize it, Indigenous peoples will have the ability to control how non-Indigenous laws and actions will affect them. But who exactly are the Indigenous peoples that are the subjects of this discourse? This book argues that the subject status of Indigenous peoples emerged out of international law in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Then, through a series of case studies, it considers how self-identifying Indigenous peoples, scholars, UN institutions and non-government organizations (NGOs) dispersed that subject-status and associated rights discourse through international and national legal contexts. It shows that those who claim international human rights as Indigenous peoples performatively become identifiable subjects of international law - but further demonstrates that this does not, however, provide them with control over, or emancipation from, a state-based legal system. Maintaining that the discourse on Indigenous peoples and international law itself needs to be theoretically and critically re-appraised, this book problematises the subject-status of those who claim Indigenous peoples' rights and the role of scholars, institutions, NGOs and others in producing that subject-status. Squarely addressing the limitations of international human rights law, it nevertheless goes on to provide a conceptual framework for rethinking the promise and power of Indigenous peoples' rights. Original and sophisticated, the book will appeal to scholars, activists and lawyers involved with indigenous rights, as well as those with more general interests in the operation of international law.

The Multilateral Investment System and Multinational Enterprises (Paperback, New Ed): Thomas L. Brewer, Stephen Young The Multilateral Investment System and Multinational Enterprises (Paperback, New Ed)
Thomas L. Brewer, Stephen Young
R3,584 Discovery Miles 35 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Brewer and Young examine the future of the world economy and the key economic and political forces that will shape it. Considering the implications of historically important changes in the world economy in recent years, including the expansion of the international investments of multinational corporations and the new role of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the authors present numerous examples of how countries have changed their international trade and investment policies, and examine how these changes are affecting firms' strategies and operations worldwide. This book explains the importance to international investment, as well as trade and technology transfer, of the many agreements being implemented by the WTO, and discusses the roles of other international agencies such as the UN, World Bank, OECD, EU, and NAFTA.
