The worlds of hip-hop and suburbia couldn't seem further apart . . . and that's just what makes Housebroken so doggone funny. Cartoonist Steve Watkins plunks down DJ Dog, his plucky ex-rap star canine, into the middle-class Watson family, and a whole lot of grumbling, growling, and cultural "enlightenment" takes place. Gangsta Yoga with DJ Dog is the second regular collection of Watkins's nationally syndicated strip, and this book promises the same successful combination of hilarious laughs and crossover sales as its predecessor. DJ Dog may be a warm and fuzzy puppy at heart, but his "ruff" edges leave something to be desired when it comes to harmonizing with Mya, the nine-year-old daughter of the Watson family and CEO wannabe. DJ often teams up with Mya's seven-year-old brother, Malik, to oppose her get-rich schemes, which include selling Girl Scout cookie-backed securities. Whether he's teaching yoga positions, such as "Duck from Driveby," or taking over the elementary school orchestra and renaming them the "Murderers Bows," this hip-hop pup is bound to be funny.
You only get one life. Make it a memorable one. This is the second title in an exciting international bestselling series of books that will help you search out essential sights and experiences around the world. In Unforgettable Things to Do Before You Die, international travel writers and photographers Steve Watkins and Clare Jones draw on their years of experience to select their ultimate trips of a lifetime. This book will introduce you to a host of unusual and amazing activities to be done in fabulous destinations during a break of two weeks or less. Adventures range from searching for pearls in Tahiti, French Polynesia, and dog-sledding through the snowy landscapes of Sweden, to exploring the rainforests of Belize, and sailing down the Nile on an Egyptian felucca. For the less active explorer they offer more relaxed but equally unmissable pursuits, such as watching an opera in the ancient ruins of Verona, Italy, or wine-tasting in Bordeaux, France. Lavishly illustrated with specially commissioned photographs, Unforgettable Things to Do Before You Die is aimed at anyone looking for an inspirational experience of a lifetime.
Dogs and comic strips enjoy a long history together. But leave it to the highly creative mind of cartoonist Steve Watkins to come up with a "dawg" like no other. Watkins's pooch is none other than DJ Dog, a down-on-his-luck, ex-rap star canine forced by circumstances beyond his control to become a permanent houseguest in a suburban family household. Talk about culture shock!Watkins pulls off this unlikely scenario in his hot new comic strip, Housebroken, which captures fans everywhere it appears. Now Housebroken: There's a New Dawg in Town provides the perfect way for fans to find out what happens when hip-hop and suburban cultures clash under one roof. DJ continues to be a star-at least in his own mind-but he must share the stage with the Watson family, including neurotic attorney and father Thurgood, outspoken mother Leslie, nine-year-old businesswoman and daughter Mya, and seven-year-old son Malik, who likes cars and sports second only to his once-famous pit bull.Housebroken boasts all the elements of a hilarious comedy: city dog in the 'burbs, personal agendas galore, attitude and ineptitude, egos to match the extremes. Like the strip, this book holds multiracial appeal, reaching a broad audience with its universal themes of family, cooperation, and overcoming differences.
In 1988 several white managers of the Shoney's restaurant chain
protested against the company's discriminatory hiring practices,
including an order to blacken the "O" in "Shoney's" on minorities'
job applications so that the marked forms could be discarded. When
the managers refused to comply, they lost their jobs but not their
resolve--they sued the company. Their case grew into the largest
racial job discrimination class action lawsuit of its time.
Shoney's eventually offered to settle out of court, and the nearly
21,000 claimants divided a $132.5 million settlement, bringing to
an abrupt end a landmark case that changed corporate attitudes
nationwide.
