Politics today is inextricably bound to the media, indeed it is now a routine assumption that the media can determine election outcomes. Consequently, over the last 20 years, the conduct of politics has become increasingly driven by what might "play well" on televison or in the press. Not just election campaigning, but other major political platforms including by-elections, budgets, party conferences and set piece speeches have become dominated by media considerations. This is a book about how that relationship works in practice. What sort of deals are done between politicians and journalists? What tactics do politicians use to try and manipulate the media? What are journalists' techniques of resistance? What determines how a campaign is put together? Have policy issues and the national good really been surrendered to image-making and sound-bite tactics? This book examines the modern process of political communication through the eyes of the many different actors who are now involved. Through their own experience, and through personal interviews conducted with many of the key media and political figures, the authors construct a vivid picture of how political communication is managed today and the direction in which it is going.

The purpose of this research monograph is to utilize algebraic and systems theory for the structure analysis and design of multivariable control systems described by state-space representations and matrix fraction descriptions. A unified approach characterizing the dynamics of a system through the formulation of the characteristic -matrix of the system is presented. The latent structures, solvents, divisors, and spectral factors of the non-singular characteristic -matrix and their relationships with the respesctive counterparts of the state-space representations are explored. Applications in model reduction, pole assignment design, modal control design for multivariable systems, parallel realizations and cascade realizations of multiport networks are illustrated. Computational algorithms and illustrative numerical examples are presented throughout the monograph. The reader is assumed to have a graduate level background in modern control theory.

Hammond scours refugee camps in the French-speaking country across the border from Makokota. Having no success, he journeys with a Polish nurse deep into the ravaged land and its violent and dismal reality. Before his journey is over, he will learn that you can't find anything until you have lost everything.

The text is necessarily rather mathematical in style, but the mathematics nowhere allowed priority over the key physical ideas. My aim throughout was to be as complete and self- contained but to avoid, as far as possible, lengthy and formal mathematical proofs. Each of the eight chapters is followed by about forty exercise problems with which the reader can test their understanding and hone their skills. These will also provide a valuable resource to tutors and lectures.
