In Crime Prevention: Theory and Practice, Second Edition, Dr.
Schneider has updated every chapter in this reliable text using the
latest research, the most recently published articles and books,
and feedback from professors and students using the first edition.
Providing an introduction to dominant approaches, key concepts,
theories, and research, the book supplies concrete advice on
planning, implementing, and evaluating a crime prevention plan.
This edition includes a new chapter applying crime prevention
through social development principles to adolescents and young
adults. This chapter is a recognition of the disproportionate rate
of offending by adolescents and young adults as well as the
distinctive risk factors faced by these groups. It also emphasizes
the unique nature of applying social problem-solving solutions to
adolescents and young adults who have been in formal contact with
the criminal justice system. The focus is on recidivism prevention,
an often-ignored, but critical aspect of crime prevention. Laying
out a systematic blueprint for a successful crime prevention
project, the book also updates the extant literature on crime
prevention-in particular the addition of research that has been
published since the first edition of this book. Updated case
studies reflecting new data present real examples of crime
prevention programs and organizations and illustrate the
conceptual, theoretical, and empirical elements of the book.
Learning objectives, discussion questions, and exercises facilitate
learning and retention and a companion website provides ancillary
material for students and professors.
Double bill of documentary-style horror films. 'The Blair Witch
Project' (1998) follows three students from Burkittsville - Heather
(Heather Donahue), Josh (Joshua Leonard) and Michael (Michael
Williams) - as they head into the woods to investigate the local
legend of the Blair Witch, a spirit blamed for the deaths of
various children. After trekking deep into the forest, the group
lose their map, quickly become lost and are forced to spend extra
days trying to find their way back out. Confronted by terrifying
noises and with strange artefacts appearing around their camp,
panic sets in as the students are driven further into the woods by
an unseen and sinister force. In 'Blair Witch' (2016), college
student James Donahue (James Allen McCune), accompanied by a group
of friends, ventures into Maryland's Black Hills Forest in search
of his missing sister who disappeared 20 years earlier while
searching for evidence of the Blair Witch. After an uneventful hike
deep into the woods, the group begin to feel a menacing presence in
their camp as the night draws on. When a number of mysterious
figures then appear in the trees around the camp, the panicked
group begin to realise that the legend is real and more sinister
than they could have imagined...
In a scientifically exacting world scientists must assume
responsibility for the consequences of science and technology . . .
. The individual member of the educational and scientific estate
may wish to avoid responsibility; but he cannot justify it by the
claim of higher commitment. -JOHN KENNETH GALBRAITH The New
Industrial State Scientists can no longer afford to be ndive about
the political effects of publicly stated scientific opinions. If
the effect of their scientific views is politically potent, they
have an obligation to declare their political or value assumptions,
and to try to be honest with themselves, their colleagues and their
audience about the degree to which these assumptions have affected
their selection and interpretation of scientific evidence. Once
scientific opinion enters into the public domain, the possibility
of political neutrality disappears, but this does not mean that
objectivity should be thrown to the winds. HARVEY BROOKS, 1973

comfort for which they are paying so dearly, the first mate at the

miles ahead through the thick fog. He hurries to tell the captain
about it. As a veteran of countless uneventful voyages, the captain

Steven Schneider's newly revised second edition of How Parents Can
Help Kids Improve Test Scores: Taking the Stakes Out of Literacy
Testing highlights the most recent literacy initiatives in America
since the federal act of No Child Left Behind. His book has been
redesigned to further help teachers and parents navigate through
the maze of newly developed state standardized testing in reading
and writing, so students may be able to achieve greater success. By
using the proactive methods shown in this book and by following
easily understood step-by-step instructions, parents and teachers
can begin to help their children take the first steps down the road
to literacy and to understanding the Common Core language arts
subjects. This book features time-tested activities, suggestions,
and a plethora of practical advice to assist teachers and parents
in raising children's scores on standardized state reading tests.
By utilizing the highly prescriptive "Pinpoint Reading Program,"
newly revised in this second edition, parents and teachers will
gain new insights into the format, style, and objectives of these
tests and how they can assist children to score higher. Most
importantly, this book instills the confidence that children need
to achieve the success that they rightfully deserve and for which
their parents and teachers have come to expect.
New Hollywood violence is a groundbreaking collection of essays
devoted to an interrogation of various aspects, dimensions, and
issues relating to the depiction of violence in New Hollywood
filmmaking. 'New Hollywood' refers to the return to genre
filmmaking following America's flirtation with European art cinema
in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and is characterised by vast
production budgets, and special effects. Focusing on the
motivations, the formal and stylistic qualities and the cultural
politics of violence as well as the effects on viewers, the
collection is divided into four sections: 'Surveys and schemas';
'Spectacle and style'; 'Race and gender' and 'Politics to
ideology'. An Afterword by Stephen Prince reflects on the various
essays and points the way towards areas of future exploration. -- .
Over the past decade, the popularity of cocktails has returned with
gusto. Amateur and professional mixologists alike have set about
recovering not just the craft of the cocktail, but also its
history, philosophy, and culture. The Shaken and the Stirred
features essays written by distillers, bartenders and amateur
mixologists, as well as scholars, all examining the so-called
'Cocktail Revival' and cocktail culture. Why has the cocktail
returned with such force? Why has the cocktail always acted as a
cultural indicator of class, race, sexuality and politics in both
the real and the fictional world? Why has the cocktail revival
produced a host of professional organizations, blogs, and
conferences devoted to examining and reviving both the drinks and
habits of these earlier cultures?
It is only natural that successful executives and managers will
look forward to the day when they are invited to join the company
board. While there are fewer more powerful signs of professional
recognition, there are also fewer greater personal challenges and
pitfalls than entering the boardroom. This book, by two leading
executive coaches, provides insight, advice and savviness on
becoming a successful board member. Often, the very attributes that
may have underpinned success as a manager can be the very traits
that derail additional success in the boardroom. The book looks at
the difference between being a manager and board member, the right
kind of behaviour to adopt in the boardroom, managing exposure and
accountability, the leadership traits required as a board member,
amongst other key traits and issues essential to boardroom
survival. For new board members, this book is essential reading.

Money laundering is the process of converting or transferring cash
or other assets, generated from illegal activity, in order to
conceal or disguise their origins. In recent years, the
international community has decided that focusing on money
laundering is an efficient strategy in policing organized crime
and, now terrorism. To this end, countries are encouraged to
harmonize their policies and legislation and, to some extent, their
policing strategies. Before adopting these new strategies, however,
it is important to understand the extent of money laundering in
different jurisdictions, as well as the likelihood of success and
the costs involved in these anti-laundering strategies.
This new work by Margaret E. Beare and Stephen Schneider brings
empirical evidence to the study of money laundering in Canada - a
topic that has recently assumed an international profile. They
challenge the seemingly common sense notion, fueled by political
posturing and policing rhetoric, that taking the profits away from
criminals is a rational law enforcment strategy. Using data from
police cases, the inner working of financial institutions, and the
'successful' claims of privilege from our legal profession, the
final picture that the authors paint is of a good enforcement
strategy run amuch amid conflicting interests and agendas, an
overly ambitious set of expectations, and an ambiguous body of
evidence as to the strategy's overall merits.
