Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
Electromagnetics and Transmission Lines Textbook resource covering
static electric and magnetic fields, dynamic electromagnetic
fields, transmission lines, antennas, and signal integrity within a
single course Electromagnetics and Transmission Lines provides
coverage of what every electrical engineer (not just the
electromagnetic specialist) should know about electromagnetic
fields and transmission lines. This work examines several
fundamental electrical engineering concepts and components from an
electromagnetic fields viewpoint, such as electric circuit laws,
resistance, capacitance, and self and mutual inductances. The
approach to transmission lines (T-lines), Smith charts, and
scattering parameters establishes the underlying concepts of vector
network analyzer (VNA) measurements. System-level antenna
parameters, basic wireless links, and signal integrity are examined
in the final chapters. As an efficient learning resource,
electromagnetics and transmission lines content is strategically
modulated in breadth and depth towards a single semester objective.
Extraneous, distracting topics are excluded. The wording style is
somewhat more conversational than most electromagnetics textbooks
in order to enhance student engagement and inclusivity while
conveying the rigor that is essential for engineering student
development. To aid in information retention, the authors also
provide supplementary material, including a homework solutions
manual, lecture notes, and VNA experiments. Sample topics covered
in Electromagnetics and Transmission Lines include: Vector algebra
and coordinate systems, Coulomb's law, Biot-Savart law, Gauss's
law, and solenoidal magnetic flux Electric potential, Ampere's
circuital law, Faraday's law, displacement current, and the
electromagnetic principles underlying resistance, capacitance, and
self and mutual inductances The integral form of Maxwell's
equations from a conceptual viewpoint that relates the equations to
physical understanding (the differential forms are also included in
an appendix) DC transients and AC steady-state waves, reflections,
and standing waves on T-lines Interrelationships of AC steady-state
T-line theory, the Smith chart, and scattering parameters Antenna
basics and line-of-sight link analysis using the Friis equation An
introduction to signal integrity Electromagnetics and Transmission
Lines is an authoritative textbook learning resource, suited
perfectly for engineering programs at colleges and universities
with a single required electromagnetic fields course. Student
background assumptions are multivariable calculus, DC and AC
electric circuits, physics of electromagnetics, and elementary
differential equations.
Precipitation plays a significant role in the climate system, and
this is the first book to provide a comprehensive examination of
the processes involved in the generation of clouds, rain, snow and
hail, how precipitation is measured, how its distribution has
changed over time, and how we still need to make improvements to
the way precipitation is measured. It traces our attempts to
understand what clouds are, from ancient Greeks to the present day.
It also discusses developments in the measurement of precipitation,
from rain gauges to satellite techniques, and how these
measurements have enabled researchers to estimate global trends,
totals, variability and extremes of precipitation. This will be a
valuable and fascinating reference for academic researchers in the
fields of environmental science and climatology. It will also be of
great interest to professionals in water resource and flood
management.
This new edition has been brought completely up-to-date and expanded considerably. It has five new chapters covering visibility, clouds, lightning, atmospheric composition, and the upper atmosphere. The chapter on barometric pressure has been rewritten and expanded, while the chapter on oceans and polar regions has been split into two separate and expanded chapters. In addition, the final chapter--Forward Look--has been rewritten. This volume will be important reading for all professionals involved in pure environmental research or in the day-to-day management of the environment. First Edition Hb (2000): 0-521-57310-6
This textbook, derived from courses given by three leading
researchers, provides advanced undergraduates and graduates with
up-to-date coverage of space physics, from the Sun to the
interstellar medium. Clear explanations of the underlying physical
processes are presented alongside major new discoveries and
knowledge gained from space missions, ground-based observations,
theory, and modelling to inspire students. Building from the basics
to more complex ideas, the book contains enough material for a
two-semester course but the authors also provide suggestions for
how the material can be tailored to fit a single semester.
End-of-chapter problems reinforce concepts and include
computer-based exercises specially developed for this textbook
package. Free access to the software is available via the book's
website and enables students to model the behavior of
magnetospheric and solar plasma. An extensive glossary recaps new
terms and carefully selected further reading sections encourage
students to explore advanced topics of interest.
Case Learning for Teachers: Strategic Knowledge for Professional
Experience is a unique resource for Australian pre-service
educators that draws on the author's experiences as an education
researcher, lecturer and classroom teacher. This textbook uses a
case stories approach to support pre-service teachers in developing
the skills of observation and reflective practice necessary for
professional experience placements and the transition to the
classroom. Part 1 introduces the case learning approach and
outlines strategies for reading and writing case stories. Part 2 is
structured by the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
The text includes case stories addressing topics like knowing your
students, knowing content, planning for teaching, managing
behaviour, diverse learners, assessment, and developing
professional relationships in the school setting. Integrating
threshold concepts and the case-learning model, the innovative
approach taken by Case Learning for Teachers makes it an invaluable
tool for pre-service teachers.
