Daniel Mayer stellt eine durchgängige 1D/3D-Simulationsmethodik vor, in welcher die genaue Temperaturverteilung am Kolben zunächst über ein 0D/1D-Motormodell vorausberechnet und anschließend als Randbedingung in einem transienten Wandtemperaturmodell implementiert wird, um in 3D-CFD-Simulationen die lokalen instationären Wandtemperaturschwingungen während der Verbrennung abbilden zu können. Im Zuge der Validierung mittels Oberflächentemperaturmessungen in Kombination mit einer entwickelten analytischen Rußschicht- bzw. Material-Korrektur zeigt der Autor, dass der neue Workflow sowie die gewählte Wärmeübergangsmodellierung grundsätzlich zufriedenstellende Ergebnisse liefern und für die zukünftige simulationsgestützte Brennverfahrensentwicklung eingesetzt werden können.

An extraordinary collection of texts and images compiled by Wolfgang Laib. Wolfgang Laib: The Beginning of Something Else combines texts that are particularly important for the artist’s creative work, together with a variety of selected images. Included are, for example, passages from the "Epic of Gilgamesh", a poem by the Buddhist monk Bodhidharma, and thoughts by Friedrich Nietzsche. The texts and images are combined to create an unusual publication, which reflects Wolfgang Laib’s (b. 1950) interest in literature as well as some of the most important sources of inspiration for his sensitive work. This collection reveals Wolfgang Laib in a subtle and personal way. It sheds light on an artist whose work, which dates back to the 1970s, has questioned our treatment of nature, and thus could not be more topical.

The GAMM Committee for "Efficient Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations" organizes workshops on subjects concerning the algorithmical treat ment of partial differential equations. The topics are discretization methods like the finite element and finite volume method for various types of applications in structural and fluid mechanics. Particular attention is devoted to advanced solu tion techniques. th The series of such workshops was continued in 1993, January 22-24, with the 9 Kiel-Seminar on the special topic "Adaptive Methods Algorithms, Theory and Applications" at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel. The seminar was attended by 76 scientists from 7 countries and 23 lectures were given. The list of topics contained general lectures on adaptivity, special discretization schemes, error estimators, space-time adaptivity, adaptive solvers, multi-grid me thods, wavelets, and parallelization. In its new presentation of the collection, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart establishes a dialogue between works from the private Scharpff-Striebich collection and works from its own stocks. Contemporary positions and works since the 1960s which gain a new topicality through the retrospective view, make clear the complexity and contradictory nature of our society. For some time now tense situations have characterised our everyday lives. From curfews and violence to the search for our own identity, we are constantly in the process of seeking re-orientation. Art symbolises the uncertainty and the instability which we experience on a daily basis. In addition to numerous illustrations of the works, the catalogue also includes short statements by the artists in which they comment on their works, thereby complementing their artistic oeuvre.

In diesem Jahr steht es unter dem Motto "Die Fertigungstechnik bestimmt den wirtschaftlichen Erfolg. Mit richtigen Weichenstellungen sichern wir den Industriestandort Deutschland."

Das Fertigungstechnische Ko/loquium in Stuttgart findet in dreijahrigem Turnus und in diesem Jahr zum 6. Male statt. Es fiihrt die Tradition des von Professor Dolezalek 1959 ins Leben gerufenen Automatisierungs-Kolloquiums fort. Die Fertigungstechnischen Institute der Universitat Stuttgart befassen sich mit allen Fragen der Fertigungstech- nik hinsichtlich der Technologie spanender und umformender Verfahren, mit der Planung und Organisation von Fertigungsanlagen, mit der Konstruktion und Steuerung von Werkzeugmaschinen und Fertigungseinrichtungen. In dies en Instituten, zu denen noch die Fraunhofer-Institute fiir Produktionstechnik und Automatisierung (lPA) sowie fUr Arbeitswirtschaft und Organisation (lAO) gehoren, sind derzeit etwa 250 wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter im Bereich der Forschung Hitig. Das Fertigungstechnische Kolloquium 1985 steht unter dem Motto "Erhaltung der Wettbewerbsfiihigkeit durch Wissen, Wollen, Konnen, Machen". Es solI zur Verbreitung von aktuellem Wissen und Erfahrungen aus dem Be- reich der Fertigungstechnik beitragen und dem Zuhorer Vergleichsmoglichkeiten bieten und durch die Darstellung technischer Tendenzen neue Ansto/3e geben.
