South Asia (Hardcover): Sumit Ganguly South Asia (Hardcover)
Sumit Ganguly
R2,522 Discovery Miles 25 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In recent years the world's focus on South Asia has increased dramatically. With the events of 9/11, the detonation of atomic weapons by both India and Pakistan, the discovery of an illicit nuclear proliferation network based in Islamabad, regime change in an unstable Afghanistan, and the rise of India as an economic power, global interest in the region has reached perhaps an all-time high. Leading experts analyze the key strategic, political, and economic issues touching on South Asia and its role in the world in the essays that make up this inaugural volume in the Current History Books Series.

Focusing on modern South Asia, including India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, this authoritative volume provides an overview of the events and trends that have rocked this increasingly volatile region over the past decade. Edited and with an introduction by Sumit Ganguly, a leading expert on the region, this volume provides a critical introduction to South Asia. South Asia also contains current maps as well as a "Recent Chronology of Events" that provides a decade's worth of information on the region, organized by year and by country. This timely and comprehensive collection of essays provides a definitive account of modern South Asia.

India and Counterinsurgency - Lessons Learned (Hardcover): Sumit Ganguly, David P. Fidler India and Counterinsurgency - Lessons Learned (Hardcover)
Sumit Ganguly, David P. Fidler
R4,313 Discovery Miles 43 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This edited volume focuses on India's experiences waging counterinsurgency campaigns since its independence in 1947.

Filling a clear gap in the literature, the book traces and assess the origins, evolution and current state of India's counterinsurgency strategies and capabilities, focusing on key counterinsurgency campaigns waged by India within and outside its territory. It also analyzes the development of Indian doctrine on counterinsurgency, and locates this within the overall ebb and flow of India's defense and security policies. The central argument is that counterinsurgency has been an integral part of India's overall security policy and can thereby impart much to political and military leaders in other states. Since its emergence from British colonialism, India's defence policies have not merely sought to protect and preserve India's inherited colonial borders from threats by rival states, but have also sought to prevent and suppress secessionist movements. In countering insurgencies, the Indian state has fashioned strategies that seek to repress militarily any secessionist movement, while simultaneously forging a range of civilian administrative and institutional arrangements that attempt to address the grievances of disaffected populations.

The book highlights key strategic and tactical innovations that the Indian Army and security forces made to deal with a range of insurgent movements. Simultaneously, it also examines how the civilian-military nexus enabled India's policy makers to utilize existing, and formulate novel, institutional means to address extant political grievances. India has been most successful where it has managed to use calibrated force, obtained the trust of much of the aggrieved population and made persuasive commitments to political and institutional reform. Examination of these elements of India's counterinsurgency performance can be compared to counterinsurgency doctrine developed by other countries, including the United States, and thus yield comparative policy prescriptions and recommendations that can be applied to other counterinsurgency contexts.

This book will be of great interest to students of counterinsurgency and irregular warfare, Indian politics, Asian Security Studies and Strategic Studies in general.

The Future of U.S.-India Security Cooperation (Paperback): Sumit Ganguly, M. Chris Mason The Future of U.S.-India Security Cooperation (Paperback)
Sumit Ganguly, M. Chris Mason
R881 Discovery Miles 8 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book deals with the evolution, current status and potential of U.S.-India strategic cooperation. From very modest beginnings, the U.S.-India strategic partnership has developed significantly over the last decade. In considerable part, this growth has stemmed from overlapping concerns about the rise and assertiveness of the People's Republic of China, as well as the instability of Pakistan. Despite the emergence of this partnership, significant differences remain, some of which stem from Cold War legacies, others from divergent global strategic interests and institutional design. In spite of these areas of discord, the overall trajectory of the relationship appears promising. Increased cooperation and closer policy coordination underscore a deepening of the relationship, while fundamental differences in national approaches to strategic challenges demand flexibility and compromise in the future. -- .

The Covid-19 Crisis in South Asia - Coping with the Pandemic (Hardcover): Sumit Ganguly, Dinsha Mistree The Covid-19 Crisis in South Asia - Coping with the Pandemic (Hardcover)
Sumit Ganguly, Dinsha Mistree
R3,872 Discovery Miles 38 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This edited book provides a range of perspectives on the handling of particular aspects of the Covid-19 pandemic across the principal states of South Asia. As the first academic volume to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic in South Asia, it examines such issues as how India has dealt with the fallout of the pandemic on its substantial diaspora in the Middle East; the competitive Sino-Indian vaccine diplomacy strategies in Bangladesh; Nepal's attempts to cope with the pandemic in light of its limited health infrastructure; Sri Lanka's differential treatment of its population based upon ethnic preferences; and how Pakistan's civil-military relations shaped its handling of the pandemic. The Introduction and the first section summarize the responses to the pandemic made by each principal state in the region. These chapters assess the process of decision-making within each state, with special attention placed on identifying and analzying the actors involved. The Covid-19 pandemic is also reshaping international relations of the subcontinent and the pandemic has laid bare several new cross-border challenges and opportunities that states will have to contend with in the future. The book also considers five of the most pressing issue areas. First, it considers how diaspora communities in the Gulf were affected by the pandemic, and what lessons South Asian sending states can take from protecting their citizens in the future. Second, the Covid-19 pandemic will affect how countries engage in status politics, shaping which countries will be able to lead in regional relations. Third, the Covid-19 pandemic is likely to affect prospects for regional cooperation, both for dealing with the current pandemic as well as future crises. Fourth, it will shape how South Asian states engage in global governance. Fifth, South Asian states may revisit their relations with China in light of the pandemic. This book will be of much interest to students of South Asian politics, human security and international relations.

Enduring and Emerging Issues in South Asian Security - Essays in Honor of Stephen Philip Cohen (Paperback): Sumit Ganguly,... Enduring and Emerging Issues in South Asian Security - Essays in Honor of Stephen Philip Cohen (Paperback)
Sumit Ganguly, Dinshaw Mistry
R836 Discovery Miles 8 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Paying tribute to a noted scholar by digging deep into the issues he explored.Long-time Brookings senior fellow Stephen Philip Cohen was the first American scholar to work in the field of South Asian security studies. He largely defined the field, trained many of is leading analysts, and was himself its most experienced and insightful scholar-practitioner until his death in 2019. This book of essays by several of his students who have made an impact on the field, along contributions from academics who knew Cohen well as well as former students in policy fields, is an intellectual homage to Cohen. It is also an impressive overview of a number of the vital questions facing the nations of that region as well as their neighbors both near and far. Major enduring issues in regional security include India-Pakistan relations, India-China relations, conventional forces-and perhaps the most sensitive issue of all, nuclear weapons. But other important issues remain underexplored, especially outside the region, and are addressed in this book. They include Pakistan's political culture, the politics of the insurgency in Baluchistan, political legitimacy and governance in India and China, and internal security threats facing Nepal, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and the Maldives. Governments and societies in the region have grappled with these issues for decades, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. To varying degrees, the issues have important implications for U.S. foreign policy in and beyond South Asia. Anyone interested in the security of South Asia will be rewarded with new insights from academics and analysts who address a wide range of subjects Stephen Philip Cohen covered during his long and distinguished career.

Nuclear Proliferation in South Asia - Crisis Behaviour and the Bomb (Paperback): Sumit Ganguly, S. Paul Kapur Nuclear Proliferation in South Asia - Crisis Behaviour and the Bomb (Paperback)
Sumit Ganguly, S. Paul Kapur
R1,330 Discovery Miles 13 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This edited volume explores competing perspectives on the impact of nuclear weapons proliferation on the South Asian security environment. The spread of nuclear weapons is one of the world's foremost security concerns. The effect of nuclear weapons on the behaviour of newly nuclear states, and the potential for future international crises, are of particular concern. As a region of burgeoning economic and political importance, South Asia offers a crucial test of proliferation's effects on the crisis behaviour of newly nuclear states. This volume creates a dialogue between scholars who believe that nuclear weapons have stabilized the subcontinent, and those who believe that nuclear weapons have made South Asia more conflict prone. It does so by pairing competing analyses of four major regional crises: the 1987 "Brasstacks" crisis, the Indo-Pakistani crisis of 1990, the 1999 Kargil war, which occurred after the nuclear tests; and the 2001-2 Indo-Pakistani militarized standoff. In addition, the volume explores the implications of the South Asian nuclear experience for potential new nuclear states such as North Korea and Iran.

US-Indian Strategic Cooperation into the 21st Century - More than Words (Hardcover): Sumit Ganguly, Andrew Scobell, Brian Shoup US-Indian Strategic Cooperation into the 21st Century - More than Words (Hardcover)
Sumit Ganguly, Andrew Scobell, Brian Shoup
R5,009 Discovery Miles 50 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This work will bring together a series of perspectives on the question of U.S.-Indian strategic cooperation. The contributions in the book will assess past efforts, the present status and future directions of such cooperation.
An introductory chapter written by the editors will provide an overview of the entire volume identifying the key themes and issues. The next chapter will set out the strategic context for and logic behind India's emerging security cooperation with the United States. A parallel chapter will describe the strategic context for and logic behind growing U.S. security cooperation with India. A key impetus for the growing bilateral cooperation is the U.S.-led Global War on Terrorism. One chapter will provide a U.S. assessment of India's role in the anti-terror struggle, and another chapter will provide an Indian assessment of the U.S. worldwide anti-terror effort. An additional chapter will present a Chinese view of the growing security ties between Washington and New Delhi and bilateral cooperation in fighting terror. Another pair of chapters will review and assess military-to-military ties between the United States and India, one from the perspective of Washington, and the other from a New Delhi perspective. Both chapters will place their bilateral military ties in the context of each country's defense ties with other countries (e.g. Russia and China).
A further set of chapters will consider a critical area of global concern: the proliferation of ballistic missiles and weapons of mass destruction-especially nuclear technology, one from an Indian perspective and a second from a U.S. viewpoint. The issue of dual use technology will also be addressed in bothchapters. A final series of chapters will examine the controversial issue of peacekeeping. Different states and their armed forces tend to hold quite different views about under what circumstances a peacekeeping operation can be successfully executed and whether it should be a core mission for a military force. One chapter will present an Indian perspective, another chapter will provide a U.S. perspective and another will offer the perspective of a third country. Finally, a brief concluding chapter, written by the co-editors, will evaluate the evolving U.S.-Indian security ties and recommend possible paths for future development.

The Origins of War in South Asia - Indo-Pakistani Conflicts Since 1947 (Hardcover): Sumit Ganguly The Origins of War in South Asia - Indo-Pakistani Conflicts Since 1947 (Hardcover)
Sumit Ganguly
R3,882 Discovery Miles 38 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In examining the forces that made the Indo-Pakistani relationship prone to conflict, Dr. Ganguly focusses first on the nature of the British colonial disengagement policy, a hasty and ill-conceived procedure that served to exacerbate the ideological differences between India's major political parties, the Congress and the Muslim League. Their competing views-the Congress espoused a secular polity while the League drew its inspiration from Islamic tenets-formed the basis of the two polities that emerged from the collapse of the British Indian empire. Disputes also arose over the uncertain status of Kashmir. With the lapse of the British doctrine of paramountcy (recognition of the British as the sovereign power in India), the so-called princely states had to join either India or Pakistan on the basis of geographic location and demographic composition. Kashmir posed a problem because of its location and because it had a Hindu monarch ruling a Muslim majority population. This peculiar status made it the center of a Pakistani irredentist claim. This claim was rejected by India, iintent upon demonstrating that all minorities could thrive under the aegis of secular government. Once set in motion by the interplay of domestic, regional, and systematic factors, these three forces--disengagement, ideological differences, and the conflict over Kashmir--brought the subcontinent to war in 1947-1948, 1965, and 1971. Dr. Ganguly provides a comprehensive and comparative analysis of these three Indo-Pakistani conflicts as well as an assessment of both the impact of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan on the security of South Asia and the changes in the perceptions of that security.

The Kashmir Question - Retrospect and Prospect (Paperback, annotated edition): Sumit Ganguly The Kashmir Question - Retrospect and Prospect (Paperback, annotated edition)
Sumit Ganguly
R2,025 Discovery Miles 20 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Few bilateral conflicts have proven as resistant to resolution as the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan. What explains the tenacity of this dispute? The answer is complex and goes to the very basis of state-construction in South Asia. India, which had been created as a civic polity, initially sought to hold on to this Muslim-majority state to demonstrate its secular credentials. Pakistan, in turn, had laid claim to Kashmir because it had been created as the homeland for the Muslims of South Asia. After the break-up of Pakistan in 1971 the Pakistani irredentist claim to Kashmir lost substantial ground. If Pakistan could not cohere on the basis of religion alone it had few moral claims on its co-religionists in Kashmir. Similarly, in the 1980s, as the practice of Indian secularism was eroded, India's claim to Kashmir on the grounds of secularism largely came apart. Today their respective claims to Kashmir are mostly on the basis of statecraft. facets of the on-going dispute over Kashmir between India and Pakistan. Among other matters, it examines the respective endgames of both states, the evolution of American policy toward the dispute, the dangers of nuclear esculation in the region and the state of the insurgency in the Indian-controlled portion of the disputed state.

Asian Rivalries - Conflict, Escalation, and Limitations on Two-level Games (Paperback): Sumit Ganguly, William R. Thompson Asian Rivalries - Conflict, Escalation, and Limitations on Two-level Games (Paperback)
Sumit Ganguly, William R. Thompson
R652 Discovery Miles 6 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The most typical treatment of international relations is to conceive it as a battle between two antagonistic states volleying back and forth. In reality, interstate relations are often at least two-level games in which decision-makers operate not only in an international environment but also in a "competitive domestic" context.
Given that interstate rivalries are responsible for a disproportionate share of discord in world politics, this book sets out to explain just how these two-level rivalries really work.
By reference to specific cases, specialists on Asian rivalries examine three related questions: what is the mix of internal (domestic politics) and external (interstate politics) stimuli in the dynamics of their rivalries; in what types of circumstances do domestic politics become the predominant influence on rivalry dynamics; when domestic politics become predominant, is their effect more likely to lead to the escalation or de-escalation of rivalry hostility? By pulling together the threads laid out by each contributor, the editors create a 'grounded theory' for interstate rivalries that breaks new ground in international relations theory.

Deadly Impasse - Indo-Pakistani Relations at the Dawn of a New Century (Paperback): Sumit Ganguly Deadly Impasse - Indo-Pakistani Relations at the Dawn of a New Century (Paperback)
Sumit Ganguly
R732 Discovery Miles 7 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What ails the Indo-Pakistani relationship? Rivalry between the two states has persisted since the partition of the British Indian Empire in 1947, and despite negotiations, four wars and multiple crises, India and Pakistan remain locked in a long-standing dispute. Evaluating relations from 1999 through to 2009, Sumit Ganguly seeks to understand this troubled relationship and why efforts at peace-making and conflict resolution, which have included unilateral Indian concessions, have not been more fruitful. Charting key sources of tension throughout the decade, including the origins and outcomes of the Kargil War in 1999, developments in the Indian-controlled portion of the state of Kashmir, the attack on the Indian parliament in December 2001 and the onset of the 2001-2 crisis, Deadly Impasse sets out to discover whether the roots of this hostile relationship stem from security dilemmas or reflect the dynamics between a status quo power and a predatory state.
