Explorations In Global Ethics - Comparative Religious Ethics And Interreligious Dialogue (Hardcover): Sumner B. Twiss Explorations In Global Ethics - Comparative Religious Ethics And Interreligious Dialogue (Hardcover)
Sumner B. Twiss
R4,092 Discovery Miles 40 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume for the first time brings the scholarly discipline of comparative religious ethics into constructive collaboration with the community of interreligious dialogue. Its design is premised on two important insights. First, interreligious dialogue offers to comparative religious ethics a new, more persuasive rationale, agenda of issues, and practical orientation. Second, comparative religious ethics offers to interreligious dialogue an arsenal of critical tools and methods which will enhance the sophistication of its practical work. In this way, both theory (a dominant concern and strength of comparative religious ethics) and praxis (a dominant concern and strength of interreligious moral dialogue) are joined together in mutual effort, each contributing to the benefit of the other. The volume's contributors share this vision of collaboration, drawing explicitly from both communities of discourse in a manner that crosses disciplinary and professional boundaries to deal creatively and constructively with important methodological and global moral issue. Although theory and practice cannot easily be separated in such a collaborative project, for the purpose of clarity, the volume is divided into two main parts. The first specifically engages questions of method, theory, and the social role of the public intellectual; the second, on substantive moral themes and issues, many of which were raised at the 1993 Parliament. Taken together, the volume's essays articulate and illustrate new ways of approaching contemporary moral concerns cross-culturally yet with a rigor appropriate to our complex and pluralistic world.

Chinese Just War Ethics - Origin, Development, and Dissent (Paperback): Ping-Cheung Lo, Sumner B. Twiss Chinese Just War Ethics - Origin, Development, and Dissent (Paperback)
Ping-Cheung Lo, Sumner B. Twiss
R1,694 Discovery Miles 16 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers the first comprehensive analysis of warfare ethics in early China as well as its subsequent development. Chinese attitudes toward war are rich and nuanced, ranging across amoral realism, defensive just war, humanitarian intervention, and mournful skepticism. Covering the five major intellectual traditions in the "golden age" of Chinese civilization: Confucian, Daoist, Mohist, Legalist, and Military Strategy schools, the book's chapters immerse readers in the proper historical contexts, examine the moral concerns in the classical texts on their own terms, reframe those concerns in contemporary ethical idioms, and forge a critical dialogue between the past and the present. The volume develops fresh moral interpretations of classical texts such as The Art of War, Mencius, Xunzi, Mozi, and the Daodejing and discusses famous philosophers such as Han Fei and Wang Yang-ming, representing antithetical schools of thought about warfare. Attention is also given to the military ethics of the People's Liberation Army, examining its thinking against the backdrop of its own civilizational context. This book will be of much interest to students of just war theory, Chinese politics, ethics, and philosophy, military studies, and International Relations in general.

Politics and Religion in the United States and France (Paperback): Alec Hargreaves, John Kelsay, Sumner B. Twiss Politics and Religion in the United States and France (Paperback)
Alec Hargreaves, John Kelsay, Sumner B. Twiss; Contributions by R.Scott Appleby, Jean Bauberot, …
R1,238 Discovery Miles 12 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Religion and Politics in France and the United States compares the current status and views of Jews, Christians, and Muslims regarding political life in two states. Longstanding traditions of laicite and of constitutional law frame discussions of political speech, voting patterns, and attempts to deal with demographic and cultural shifts characteristic of French and American societies. Papers by leading scholars demonstrate the ways that historical experience sheds light on current events; how it is, for example, that previous efforts to deal with religious difference affect current approaches to the display of religious symbols in state schools, or how the struggles of minority groups for recognition affect voting patterns. One question running throughout the volume is, what can French and American policymakers and citizens learn from one another, as they seek to deal with the challenges presented by contemporary life? This book is suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students.

Sumner B. Twiss, Marian Gh Simion, Rodney L. Petersen
R3,213 Discovery Miles 32 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book pivots around two principal concerns in the modern world: the nature and practice of human rights in relation to religion, and the role of religion in perennial issues of war and peace. It articulates a vision for achieving a liberal peace and a just society firmly grounded in respect for human rights, while working in tandem with the constructive roles that religion can play even amid cultural difference. It explores topics including the status and justification of human rights; the meaning and significance of religious liberty; whether human rights protections ought to be extended to other species; how the comparative study of religious ethics ought to proceed; and the nature, limits, and future development of just war thinking. Featuring a group of distinguished contributors, this is a distinctive contribution that shows a multifaceted and original exploration of cutting edge issues with regards to the aforementioned themes.
