Susan Moore, Doreen Rosenthal, Rebecca Robinson

Drawing on theory and research from psychology and other humanities disciplines, as well as from the authors' extensive survey data collected from over 800 amateur genealogists, the authors present the experiences of family historians, including personal insights, relationship changes, mental health benefits and ethical dilemmas. The book emphasises the motivation behind this exploration, including the need to acknowledge and tell ancestral stories, the spiritual and health-related aspects of genealogical research, the addictiveness of the detective work, the lifelong learning opportunities and the passionate desire to find lost relatives. With its focus on the role of family history in shaping personal identity and contemporary culture, this is fascinating reading for anyone studying genealogy and family history, professional genealogists and those researching their own history.

Women and Retirement - Challenges of a New Life Stage (Hardcover): Susan Moore, Doreen Rosenthal Women and Retirement - Challenges of a New Life Stage (Hardcover)
Susan Moore, Doreen Rosenthal
R4,206 Discovery Miles 42 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the last century, changes to the nature and patterns of women's working lives have been vast. Notably, the huge increase in women's participation in the paid workforce means that today women are retiring in unprecedented numbers. How do they cope with this lifestyle transition? What major difficulties do they face? How do they process the problems associated with managing this transition in fulfilling ways while juggling family, financial, friendship, ageing and health issues? To date, most retirement studies have focused on men, and therefore gender-specific issues relating to post-work life, such as the pay gap, the double shift, women's longer lifespans and their traditional roles as carers and social nurturers, have been afforded far less attention. Women and Retirement: Challenges of a New Life Stage is the first book of its kind to examine women's retirement using a lifespan perspective. Based on the authors' extensive study of over 1,000 retired Australian women as well as current research, the book presents models of various retirement trajectories and compares women's experiences with the more widely researched retirement experiences of men. Moore and Rosenthal consider the nature of the transition from full-time work to retirement and the many different pathways and factors influencing this journey: women's financial status in the retirement years; their health changes; and the varied activity patterns they adopt. Women and Retirement is a comprehensive, up-to-date and evidence-based review of the female retirement experience. It will be invaluable for courses on ageing and health within psychology, women's studies, social work and sociology, and for use by practitioners in these fields.

Major Limb Replantation and Postischemia Syndrome - Investigation of Acute Ischemia-Induced Myopathy and Reperfusion Injury (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1988)
E Biemer; Translated by Susan Moore-Heidecke; Hans-Ulrich Steinau; Preface by A. Encke
R1,373 Discovery Miles 13 730 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Posttraumatic stump formation and replantation of the severed limb are both reconstructive plastic operations which may lead to the improvement or destruction of a patient's lifestyle. For the primary attending surgeon, the decision whether to undertake such an operation depends on the patient's clinical condition, the operational circumstances, the psychological and social aspects and, last but not least, on the surgeon's own abilities. This monograph is designed as a synopsis of the great number of patho-physiological parameters and surgical and rehabilitational aspects which must be considered in the analysis of complications in major limb replantation. In addition, basic information about the key role of ischemic myopathy and microangiopathy is supplied to encourage further experimental investigations.

Perfectbound, 80 lb glossy stock, full color, perfect for old docs, photos inside book. Eliza, A Blueblooded Southern Belle Who Became a Pioneer Woman: The tombstone reads simply "Eliza, wife of Adam Peck. Born March 12. 1792, Died July 23, 1874." The graveyard is beautiful, peaceful, quiet, empty of any living person on most days. Eliza's tombstone is found in the rolling hills of southwestern Kentucky. The tombstone in that Kentucky graveyard gives no hint of a blue-blooded southern belle born on a plantation in the High Santee of South Carolina, Elizabeth Gayle, whose grandfather Josiah signed, in July of 1775, the papers of the Revolutionary Association of Public Defence, South Carolina, pledging his life, fortune and sacred honor in the battle until the dispute with Britain should end. The tombstone gives no hint Eliza lived through the War of 1812, the Mexican War and the Civil War, or that her life was full of suffering and loss, despite her privileged birth. This is her story.
