From Research to Practice in Child and Adolescent Mental Health has
been shaped to reflect the mental health needs of children and
adolescents in low and middle income countries of the world. It
also includes chapters on topics based on research and practice in
high income countries which may have lessons and implications
universally. The first section of the book takes a child and
adolescent mental health services perspective encompassing
epidemiology, mental health needs, and selected policy issues. The
second section provides summaries of research findings into the
mechanisms for problems frequently encountered in child and
adolescent psychiatric practice: schizophrenia, mood disorders, and
sleep problems. The third and last section is about interventions
and practice. It describes the treatment gap between low and middle
income countries in relation to child and adolescent mental health
and shows how professionals or lay people may be trained to
effectively deliver interventions. This monograph has been produced
for the 21st congress of the International Association for Child
and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (IACAPAP) to be
held in Durban, South Africa, in 2014. This is the first congress
of IACAPAP in Africa, and it takes place at an appropriate time in
view of the continent's burgeoning child population, significant
economic growth and wish to improve the populations' health.
Understanding Uniqueness and Diversity in Child and Adolescent
Mental Health examines the determinates of individual differences
in children and young people, along with the origins of
maladjustment and psychiatric disorders. It addresses the ways in
which interventions and mental health services can be developed and
shaped to address individual differences amongst children. Topics
cover the influence of economic adversities and gender differences
on child development and life course, as well as the range of risk
and protective factors associated with the onset and persistence of
problems, including sections on anxiety disorders in infants,
bipolar disorder, and tics and Tourette's. Additional sections
focus on the potential for individualizing treatments as
illustrated by pharmacogenomics, with another highlighting ways in
which services can be adapted for specific environments, such as
the needs of refugee children and systems of service delivery that
can be enhanced by the use of telemedicine.
Positive Mental Health for Children and Adolescents: Fighting
Stigma and Promoting Resiliency examines the main mechanisms
involved in improving mental health in children and adolescents,
including social and biological processes, as well as effective
treatments. By taking into account diverse settings and cultures,
the book combines academic, research, and clinical contributions
and sets forth how it can be translated into effective clinical
practice. In addition, the book promotes the study, treatment,
care, and prevention of mental and emotional disorders and
disabilities involving children, adolescents, and their families,
and includes emerging knowledge on mental health problems and good
practice in child and adolescent psychiatry as relayed by experts
from around the world.
Starting at the Beginning: Laying the Foundation for Lifelong
Mental Health coincides with the 24th International Association for
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (IACAPAPA)
Congress in Singapore, June 2020. This book examines the
determinates of individual differences in children and young
people, along with the origins of maladjustment and psychiatric
disorders. It addresses the ways in which interventions and mental
health services can be developed and shaped to address individual
differences among children. Additional topics include environmental
hazards and mental health and cultural psychiatry as a basic
science for addressing mental health disparities. Chapters dive
deeper into anxiety disorders in infants, gaming disorder, the
pitfalls of treatment in OCD, and ADHD developmental
neuropsychiatry. Another targeted section focuses on policies for
child and adolescent mental health, including a review of mental
health services in China, Oceania and East Asia.
