In Imagining Russian Regions: Subnational Identity and Civil
Society in Nineteenth-Century Russia, Susan Smith-Peter shows how
ideas of civil society encouraged the growth of subnational
identity in Russia before 1861. Adam Smith and G.W.F. Hegel's ideas
of civil society influenced Russians and the resulting plans to
stimulate the growth of civil society also formed subnational
identities. It challenges the view of the provinces as empty space
held by Nikolai Gogol, who rejected the new non-noble provincial
identity and welcomed a noble-only district identity. By 1861,
these non-noble and noble publics would come together to form a
multi-estate provincial civil society whose promise was not
fulfilled due to the decision of the government to keep the peasant
estate institutionally separate.
As the use of computerized information continues to proliferate,
so does the need for a writing method suited to this new medium. In
"Writing for the Computer Screen," Hillary Goodall and Susan Smith
Reilly call attention to new forms of information display unique to
computers. The authors draw upon years of professional experience
in business and education to present practical computer display
techniques. This book examines the shortfalls of using established
forms of writing for the computer where information needed in a
hurry can be buried in a cluttered screen. Such problems can be
minimized if screen design is guided by the characteristics of the
medium.
Plante, veral bome, is
First published in 1981, Ethnic Segregation in Cities argues that
race and ethnicity are fundamental to writing about the city, and
that economic patterns adapt themselves to race and ethnicity
rather than vice versa. The problem of ethnic segregation is a
burning one for both geographers and sociologists – geographers
because of the concern for all aspects of urban deprivation, and
sociologists because they are discovering that space and spatial
processes are important factors in influencing social segregation
or assimilation. The book brings together some of the main
contributors to the literature on spatial aspects of ethnicity from
both sides of the Atlantic. A variety of evidence from New York,
Detroit, Bradford and Blackburn address the question of whether
choice on the path of ethnic members, or constraints imposed by the
host society are determinant factors influencing residential
segregation. This book will be of interest to students of
sociology, human geography and urban studies.
This authoritative guide offers a vital overview including the
recent fundamental changes in the care of newborn babies. As well
as medical staff, key roles are now played by senior nurses,
clinical nurse specialists, pharmacists, advanced neonatal nurse
practitioners, nurse consultants, midwives, dieticians,
physiotherapists and speech therapists. The involvement of such a
diverse range of professional cultures in such a rapidly developing
area often leads to competing priorities, complicated by a lack of
established guidelines. There is also the added challenge of fetal
medicine - an important emerging allied specialty new to many
healthcare professionals. This book assists all professionals
involved in the provision of neonatal care in understanding the
genetic, physiological and biochemical mechanisms which have either
led to or are associated with the clinical conditions affecting
their patients. With comprehensive chapters on fetal medicine,
genetics, inherited biochemical disorders, fundamental
physiological concepts, the cardiovascular, renal and respiratory
systems, bacterial and transplacental infections, pharmacokinetics,
nutrition, and an overview of haemostasis, A Foundation For
Neonatal Care aids understanding of the continuum of developmental
physiology and pathology which is now required of neonatal care
providers.

Toy Story (John Lasseter, 1995), Pixar's first feature-length
production and Hollywood's first completely computer-generated
animated film, is an international cultural phenomenon. This
collection brings together a diverse range of scholars and
practitioners who together explore the themes, compositional
techniques, cultural significance and industry legacy of this
landmark in contemporary cinema. Topics range from industrial
concerns, such as the film's groundbreaking use of computer
generated imagery and the establishment of Pixar as a major player
in the animation world, to examinations of its music, aesthetics,
and the role of toys in both the film and its fandom. The Toy Story
franchise as a whole is also considered, with chapters looking at
its cross-generational appeal and the experience of growing up
alongside the series. As the first substantial work on this
landmark film, this book will serve as an authoritative
introduction for scholars, students and fans alike.
This study explores one of the most popular and successful of
genres, yet one that has not fully enjoyed critical recognition to
match. Combining a detailed analysis of individual musicals with an
in-depth consideration of racial and gender issues, Susan Smith
examines the rich interactions that occur between music,
performance and narrrative, as well as the use of the female voice
and the female singer in certain 'Pygmalion'/'Svengali'-style
narratives. Films studied include "Show Boat" (1936, 1951), "Cabin
in the Sky" (1943), "Singin' in the Rain" (1952), "A Star is Born"
(1954), "West Side Story" (1961), "My Fair Lady" (1964) and "Funny
Girl" (1968).
