Der Pionier des modernen Schulwesens in Munchen - und weit daruber hinaus - war von 1894 bis 1919 sein Stadtschulrat Georg Kerschensteiner. Die Verbindung von theoretischem und praktischem Lernen, von Arbeitsgemeinschaft und Werkstatt (-learning by doing-) und das Prinzip des lebenslangen Lernens (-lifelong learning-) haben die Padagogik nachhaltig beeinflusst. Die Grundlagen des dualen Systems der Berufsausbildung und der Weiterbildung haben internationale Anwendung gefunden. Ein Symposium anlasslich des 150. Geburtstags von Georg Kerschensteiner (*29. Juli 1854) hat diese bahnbrechende Entwicklung kritisch in Erinnerung gerufen.
