Music and the Aging Brain describes brain functioning in aging and
addresses the power of music to protect the brain from loss of
function and how to cope with the ravages of brain diseases that
accompany aging. By studying the power of music in aging through
the lens of neuroscience, behavioral, and clinical science, the
book explains brain organization and function. Written for those
researching the brain and aging, the book provides solid examples
of research fundamentals, including rigorous standards for sample
selection, control groups, description of intervention activities,
measures of health outcomes, statistical methods, and logically
stated conclusions.
Foams are ubiquitous in our daily lives. Their presence is highly
desirable in certain foods, drinks and cosmetics, and they are
essential in oil recovery and mineral extraction. In some
industrial processes (such as the manufacture of glass, paper and
wine) foams are an unwelcome by-product. Why do they appear? What
controls the rate at which they disappear? Do they flow in the same
way as ordinary liquids? All of these questions and more are
addressed here, incorporating significant recent contributions to
the field of foams. This book is the first to provide a thorough
description of all aspects of the physico-chemical properties of
foams. It sets out what is known about their structure, their
stability, and their rheology. Engineers, researchers and students
will find descriptions of all the key concepts, illustrated by
numerous applications, as well as experiments and exercises for the
reader. A solutions manual for lecturers is available via the
publisher's web site.

Paul Klee defined himself as a " painter poet" , and his art
perfectly reflects that phrase. He was interested in colour, and
formed friendships with other artists also exploring colour, such
as Kandinsky, Picasso and Braque. His experimentation with
backgrounds, shapes, colour, sign and pictograms, as well as with
light and colour, are all portrayed in his work. This book contains
six of his most famous paintings and, with over 75 large-sized
stickers, it allows both children and adults to experiment
themselves, placing the re-usable stickers on different paintings
to see how small - and large - changes, completely change a work of
art. Sylvie Delpech studied history of art and worked in imaging
technology for television, before returning to Paris, where she
works in photography and on children' s books.
In less than a century, German forces poured into France on no
fewer than three occasions. This is the story of the Peniel family,
and how they coped with troops invading their Flanders homeland.
Combining global, media, and cultural studies, this book analyzes
the success of Hallyu, or the "Korean Wave" in the West, both at a
macro and micro level, as an alternative pop culture globalization.
This research investigates the capitalist ecosystem (formed by
producers, institutions and the state), the soft power of Hallyu,
and the reception among young people, using France as a case study,
and placing it within the broader framework of the 'consumption of
difference.' Seen by French fans as a challenge to Western pop
culture, Hallyu constitutes a material of choice for understanding
the cosmopolitan apprenticeships linked to the consumption of
cultural goods, and the use of these resources to build youth's
biographical trajectories. The book will be relevant to
researchers, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students in
sociology, cultural studies, global studies, consumption and youth
studies.
'It Rained in Bora Bora' lifts the lid on cruising, probing beneath
the superficial glamour of a Round-the-World voyage to reveal the
discontent resulting from unrealistic expectations promoted by the
hype in glossy travel brochures. We laugh at Edie's antics as she
raises selfishness to an art form, always pushing to the front of
every queue and making a miraculous recovery from her need for a
wheel-chair whenever it suits her. We shake our heads in disbelief
at 'Gracie the Grimmie' and 'the Crankies,' but can't help
wondering why they behave in the way they do. And what exactly is
it that poor, dour Margie is planning to make a splash off the
coast of St. Lucia? More importantly - why? Back stories are told
and relationships develop as 'The Matisse' ploughs on through the
ever-changing sea. For some, like Jack and Chrissie, lives will
never be the same, while others fail to learn the error of their
ways. We laugh and cry at the reactions of this group of assorted
travellers and, as their stories emerge, are occasionally shocked
beyond belief by the extraordinary behaviour of a few in the
confines of a small cruise ship. The book explores the enigma that
is human behaviour while taking the reader on an exciting journey
to over twenty different countries.
A small North Carolina mountain community is shocked when renowned
bluegrass singer, Angel Bernard, is found murdered in her home. An
unseasonably cold rain begins to fall that night. Fiona, Angel's
teenage daughter and a gifted artist, falls into despair as her
father withdraws. Fiona's only comfort is her grandmother, Rose.
Unfortunately, Rose must travel for a few days, leaving Fiona alone
with her alcoholic father. Before she departs, she asks Fiona to
complete her latest painting and gives her a ruby necklace along
with an incredible story that it was given to her grandmother by a
unicorn. On the night before Rose's return, Fiona decides to honor
her grandmother's wish and finish the painting. Around midnight,
she grows sleepy and goes to bed, when suddenly she awakes, feeling
quite cold. She looks out the window and sees that snow has
replaced the rain, so she decides to paint a while longer. Fiona's
life takes a surprising turn when she is suddenly sucked through
her painting, landing in another world. Leollyn, teenage daughter
of a local dairy farmer (Averi), discovers Fiona asleep on the hot
dusty path in her world: the LoherLans. Leollyn's world, threatened
by scorching heat, is on the verge of total destruction. The young
elf takes a dazed Fiona home to her parents, who, having
anticipated their arrival, impart words of an age-old prophecy to
the girls. In the prophecy, Leollyn and Fiona are named as the
chosen saviors of the universe; to save both worlds, the girls must
embark on a quest to vanquish an evil force (Grimgorrah) and rescue
a dragon: one of two dragons that balance the forces of nature.
Averi also presents Leollyn with a beautiful blue jewel: the twin
to the red gem Fiona wears. Averi accompanies the girls through a
secret underground tunnel system to safely deliver them into the
hands of his lifelong friend, Mirgaynia, an immortal phaerie. In
Mirgaynia's home (Wood Haven), the girls gather more information
about the prophecy. They learn, to their relief, that other
creatures in the land have also been predestined to lend aid to the
chosen heirs; thus unity is formed to defeat Grimgorrah and restore
balance to the worlds. Before they leave Wood Haven, Mirgaynia
explains that each race in the land has a special gift, each
possessing a unique ability essential to the quest's success. Her
gift is a magical mirror and a traveling companion: Jareth, a
unicorn. The unity must secure the remaining gifts before they
arrive in Fayor, the land where Grimgorrah has erected his
fortress. As they journey east, the girls meet an assortment of
magical creatures (dwarves, wravens, sylphs, and merfolk) each with
their own role to play in the fated quest. They witness hardship,
near-death experiences, and feelings of defeat as the journey
progresses and as their problems become more difficult to solve.
Fiona enters the LoherLans with only a paintbrush, a brass key, and
a copper penny, unaware that each of these items has a unique
function in this new world that is sizzling with magic. Leollyn
takes with her on the journey an embroidered handkerchief, a
hand-carved flute, and an intricately carved bird statue, each of
which also plays a vital role if the quest is to succeed. Fiona
ultimately discovers information about her ancestry and why she was
named as the heir to the prophecy. Even armed with knowledge, she
experiences doubt and hardship as she attempts to make sense of her
new life, possibly a life in a new world without her family. Faith
in a Dragon addresses a teenage girl's struggle to accept her
destiny and rely on her faith to survive. Will the girls persevere
and return balance to both worlds? Will they be able to uphold
their faith, fulfill their destinies? Will Fiona see her family
again? The story ends with a twist and sets the scene for a sequel.
The thrilling journey, filled with magic, suspense, and unexpected
turns around every corner begins . . . in Faith in a Dragon.
Over the past two decades, society has been witnessing how
technological, political, and societal changes have been
transforming individual and collective urban mobility. Driven both
by newcomers and traditional players, by disruptive as well as
incremental innovations, the main objective now is to enhance
mobility and accessibility while, reducing vehicle ownership,
congestion, road accidents, and pollution in cities. This
transformation has been mainly enabled by the widespread adoption
of internet-connected devices (e.g.: smartphones and tablets) and
by the innovative business models, technologies, and use-cases that
arose from this rapid digitalization, such as peer-to-peer, and
two-sided markets providing several mobility schemes: car-sharing,
car-pooling, bike sharing, free-floating (cars, bikes, electric
scooter), ridesharing and ride hailing either for long distances as
well as for urban and micro-mobility. The book presents - in a
holistic perspective - how this revolution is happening and what
are the major cornerstones for the implementation of robomobility.
It aims at answering several substantial issues, such as: What is
robomobility and what does it imply for the different stakeholders
of the public transport ecosystem? How do policy makers integrate
this innovation and how ready the regulations are? How do citizens
take part in this transformation? What is the level of user
acceptance for this new type of mobility? What are its
environmental impacts? What is the economic impact of deploying
these shuttles in a local ecosystem?
The challenge of life and literary narrative is the central and
perennial mystery of how people encounter, manage, and inhabit a
self and a world of their own - and others' - creations. With a nod
to the eminent scholar and psychologist Jerome Bruner, Life and
Narrative: The Risks and Responsibilities of Storying Experience
explores the circulation of meaning between experience and the
recounting of that experience to others. A variety of arguments
center around the kind of relationship life and narrative share
with one another. In this volume, rather than choosing to argue
that this relationship is either continuous or discontinuous,
editors Brian Schiff, A. Elizabeth McKim, and Sylvie Patron and
their contributing authors reject the simple binary and masterfully
incorporate a more nuanced approach that has more descriptive
appeal and theoretical traction for readers. Exploring such diverse
and fascinating topics as 'Narrative and the Law,' 'Narrative
Fiction, the Short Story, and Life,' 'The Body as Biography,' and
'The Politics of Memory,' Life and Narrative features important
research and perspectives from both up-and-coming researchers and
prominent scholars in the field - many of which who are widely
acknowledged for moving the needle forward on the study of
narrative in their respective disciplines and beyond.
This is a short, accessible workbook offering a new approach to
weight loss based on the principles of Cognitive Behavioural
Therapy (CBT). Rather than proposing a particular diet, the
workbook offers practical tools to help slimmers adhere to whatever
plan they have chosen. Written in plain language for the general
reader it is based on principles widely discussed in academic
research on addiction treatment. Informed by the author's
professional experience of working with people addicted to alcohol,
gambling and drugs, this book adapts the tools of addiction
treatment to help people manage their weight loss. Addiction
treatment centres often produce manuals for counsellors to work
through with their clients in a step by step fashion, and the
author follows this format to produce a workbook. The reader is
taken through ten easy to follow stages. These are similar to those
suggested in addiction recovery, but here they are applied to
weight loss: keeping a diary, building motivation, identifying
unmet needs, drawing a plan, creating new habits, identifying
triggers and risk situations and learning how to deal with cravings
and relapse. The last chapter also contains information for family,
friends, carers or professionals to support loved ones or clients
through the ten stages. Each chapter contains an explanation of the
stage, one or more examples to illustrate the task and exercises to
be completed by the reader followed by useful tips. The aim is for
the reader to use the traditional tools of addiction treatment to
become their own weight loss coach. It is designed as a 'companion'
to a diet to increase slimmers' motivation and self-confidence, and
goes beyond the diet to adapting to life after weight loss.
The success of any business relies heavily on the evaluation and
improvement on current strategies and processes. Such progress can

in the context of business economics. Highlighting a variety of
relevant issues on finance, economic policy, and firms and
networks, this book is an ideal reference source for managers,
professionals, students, and academics interested in emerging
developments for decision analysis.
