When Ifirst read this manuscript, Iexclaimed to a colleague: "This
is the most important and clinically relevant book on schizophrenia
since Bleuler " Time has not altered my initial enthusiastic
evaluation. Drs. Strauss and Carpenter are among the most
distinguished researchers in the field ofschizophrenia, butthey are
also clinicians ofgreat experience, breadth, sensitivity, and
flexibility. It is from this expertise, as well as theirwide
familiarity with the world literature, thattheyhavebeenable to
distill the essence of an exceedingly practical and comprehensive
approach to the understanding, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment
of schizophrenia. They begin by unequivocally stating the
inadequacy and futility of approaching schizophrenia via a single
model. Standingalone, neither a biomedical, a social, nor a
psychological model can adequately account for the complexities of
this illness with regard to etiology, phenomenol ogy, course, or
optimum treatment. While the advent of psychophar
macologicalinterventionhas made a profound impact on both
individual treatment and the responsive support systems, and is an
important aspect ofmosttreatmentplans, to view schizophrenia as a
phenothiazine deficiency disease is not only bad science but bad
therapeutics. Their conceptualization of an "interactive
developmental systems model" provides a framework upon which to
build a broad medical approach to schizophrenia. This model relates
variables drawn from different systems, interactive with one
another, and contributing to a pathogenetic process across time.
Within this bio-social-psychological matrix, one can then organize
information relative to vulnerability, the manifest illness per se,
the course of the disorder, and the multiplicity of factors
relative to treatment planning."
This is the first comprehensive biography of a major, but
neglected, figure of his age. John Theophilus Desaguliers made his
mark on the eighteenth century in several diverse ways. He was an
assistant to Sir Isaac Newton and later elucidated the difficult
concepts of Newtonian physics in private lectures. He was a member
of the Royal Society, and was presented with the Society's highest
honour, the Copley Medal, no less than three times. He was a
pioneering engineer: the water supply of Edinburgh, the ventilation
of the Houses of Parliament and the first Westminster Bridge all
owed him a debt. In a different sphere, Desaguliers became the
third Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of the Freemasons which was
founded in 1717. He is remembered worldwide for his seminal
influence during those early days of Freemasonry. He also wrote
poetry and had an influential circle of patrons, including George I
and Frederick, Prince of Wales (whom he initiated as a Mason at a
specially convened lodge at Kew). This biography, based on original
research, describes a charismatic character who was a major figure
of his age.

FLANDIT A label Billor has fled for the last ten years. Flandism is
the most radical and rigid sect of Monidism, a sect that sometimes
alienates its followers like Billor or angered kings like Merkvor.
Billor and four others are recruited by King Merkvor to find
Weslin, the major city of Flandism, so that the king can destroy it
with the huge army he has gathered. The king appoints Billor as the
leader of this diverse group: Lorbon, an expert in weapons of the
past and an advocate against all religious intolerance; Margona,
the guide and a seeker of laws eternal; Allon, a devout Miltar
belonging to a radical religious sect that opposes Monidism and
believes that spreading the word through holy war is just and
proper; and Helen, a fighter of few words who lets others lead
until their goal of finding Weslin is threatened. These five
journey through dangerous lands in which others will kill them if
their fellow party members don't first. As they travel, each meets
his or her own spiritual fate, and Billor discovers there is more
to God and the world than he learned in Flandism.
