R1,040 Discovery Miles 10 400 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Through new research and materials, Edward T. Chang proves in Pachappa Camp: The First Koreatown in the United States that Dosan Ahn Chang Ho established the first Koreatown in Riverside, California in early 1905. Chang reveals the story of Pachappa Camp and its roots in the diasporic Korean community's independence movement efforts for their homeland during the early 1900s and in the lives of the residents. Long overlooked by historians, Pachappa Camp studies the creation of Pachappa Camp and its place in Korean and Korean American history, placing Korean Americans in Riverside at the forefront of the Korean American community's history.

There is a rapid increase in interest related to novel approaches in artificial kidneys, artificial liver, and detoxifi cation. Recent research has included the successful clinical appli cations of the principle of artificial cells for adsorbent hemo perfusion. Since it is 20 years ago at McGill that the first report on "Artificial Cells" was presented, I thought it might be useful to get together a small group of speakers and participants for a day before the ASAIO meeting to discuss some recent advances in the area of the clinical applications of artificial kidney, artificial liver and artificial cells with emphasis on adsorbent hemoperfusion. However, the enthusiastic supports of distinguished speakers, session chairmen and participants were such that the original pro jection of 100 participants had expanded to a preregistration total of 250, from Australia, Canada, England, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Scotland, Sweden and U. S. A. The program also expanded to include a review section on hemodialysis, dialysate regeneration, hemofiltration, resin hemoperfusion and oxystarch given by their respective originators. The remaining of the symposium emphasizes the status of the art on different encap sulated adsorbent hemoperfusion approaches. I would like to apolo gize to those who we could not accommodate beca se of space limita tions. It is hoped that this symposium volume may be useful for them and for others who are interested in this area. Special thanks are due to Ms Joanne Toms for her excellent secretarial assistance for the conference and Mrs."

Asian American Politics - Law, Participation, and Policy (Paperback): James S. Lai Asian American Politics - Law, Participation, and Policy (Paperback)

R1,782 Discovery Miles 17 820 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Asian Americans are emerging as a political force and yet their politics have not been systematically studied by either social scientists or politicians. Asian American politics transcend simple questions of voting behavior and elective office, going all the way back to early immigration laws and all the way forward to ethnic targeting. For the first time, this book brings together original sources on key topics influencing Asian American politics, knit together by expert scholars who introduce each subject and place it in context with political events and the greater emerging literature. Court cases, legislation, demographics, and key pieces on topics ranging from gender to Japanese American redress to the Los Angeles riots to Wen Ho Lee round out this innovative reader on a politically active group likely to grow in number and electoral impact.

Factory Girls - From Village to City in a Changing China (Paperback): Leslie T. Chang Factory Girls - From Village to City in a Changing China (Paperback)
Leslie T. Chang

An eye-opening and previously untold story, "Factory Girls" is the first look into the everyday lives of the migrant factory population in China.

China has 130 million migrant workers--the largest migration in human history. In "Factory Girls," Leslie T. Chang, a former correspondent for the" Wall Street Journal" in Beijing, tells the story of these workers primarily through the lives of two young women, whom she follows over the course of three years as they attempt to rise from the assembly lines of Dongguan, an industrial city in China's Pearl River Delta.
As she tracks their lives, Chang paints a never-before-seen picture of migrant life--a world where nearly everyone is under thirty; where you can lose your boyfriend and your friends with the loss of a mobile phone; where a few computer or English lessons can catapult you into a completely different social class. Chang takes us inside a sneaker factory so large that it has its own hospital, movie theater, and fire department; to posh karaoke bars that are fronts for prostitution; to makeshift English classes where students shave their heads in monklike devotion and sit day after day in front of machines watching English words flash by; and back to a farming village for the Chinese New Year, revealing the poverty and idleness of rural life that drive young girls to leave home in the first place. Throughout this riveting portrait, Chang also interweaves the story of her own family's migrations, within China and to the West, providing historical and personal frames of reference for her investigation.
A book of global significance that provides new insight into China, "Factory Girls" demonstrates how" "the mass movement from rural villages to cities is remaking individual lives and transforming Chinese society, much as immigration to America's shores remade our own country a century ago.

'Head and shoulders above almost all other new books about China, this unflinching and yearningly compassionate portrait of the lives and loves of ordinary Chinese workers is quite unforgettable' Simon Winchester

Every year in China millions of migrant workers leave their rural towns to find jobs in the cities. These people are the driving forces behind China's economic boom: they work very hard and for little money to make the trainers, ornaments, designer handbags and toys which we buy.

Through the lives of two young women, Chang vividly portrays a world where you can lose your boyfriend and your friends with the loss of a cell phone; where lying about your age, your education, and your work experience is often a requisite for getting ahead; where a few computer or English lessons can catapult you into a completely different social class. This is a powerful and humane portrait of the forces which are shaping China.

'Astonishing . . . Heartbreaking . . . As one tool in trying to understand today's China, this is a most valuable, if troubling read' "Irish Times"

'Engrossing . . . An exceptionally vivid and compassionate depiction of the day-to-day dramas, and the fears and aspirations, of the real people who are powering China's economic boom' "Scotsman"

'Chang's elegant book is evidence that the best trips home often require a circuitous approach'

Nell Freudenberger, "Financial Times"

Myths and theories of the American melting pot, of assimilation, and of pluralistic society were shattered as racial violence during the 1992 Los Angeles uprising vividly exposed the inadequacy of our prior assumptions. The uprising revealed that radical approaches are needed to address structural issues of economic and political inequality, and issues of race and representation. Los Angeles has emerged as a focal point for social scientists as they develop new ideas about race relations. This volume, based on a special issue of Amerasia Journal, focuses o race and ethnic relations in Los Angeles as they emerged out of the uprising and within the broader national picture. Latino and Asian and African American scholars, journalists, and writers have contributed two dozen essays, commentaries, and literary works. Among the scholarly essays are "Jewish and Korean Merchants in African American Neighborhoods" by Edward Chang, "Communication between African Americans and Korean Americans before and after the Los Angeles Riots" by Ella Stewart, "Asian Americans and Latinos in San Gabriel Valley, California" by Leland T. Saito, "The South Central Los Angeles Eruption: A Latino Perspective" by Armando Navarro, and "Race, Class, Conflict and Empowerment: On Ice Cube's 'Black Korea'" by Jeff Chang. Commentaries by Asian and African American writers feature Larry Aubry, Angela E. Oh, Sharon Park, Amy Uyematsu, Erich Nakano, Walter Lew, and Miriam Ching Louie. A selection of literary writings features Mari Sunaida, Ko Won, Wanda Coleman, Mellonee R. Houston, Sae Lee, Nat Jones, Arjuna, Chungmi Kim, and Lynn Manning.
