If tumor viruses did not exist in nature they might have been created by scientists interested in basic mechanisms of develop- ment, differentiation, and tumorigenesis. In contemporary euka- ryotic cell biology tumor viruses playa similar role to that which bacteriophages once had for the molecular biology of prokary- otes. Tumor viruses provide extremely useful probes for the above cellular processes since their life cycle is genetically pro- grammed and can be followed at DNA, RNA, and protein levels. The experimental systems reviewed in this volume utilize a wide variety of viruses. A comprehensive introduction to this field has recently been published in the volumes of Molecular Biology o/Tumor Viruses: DNA Tumor Viruses, 2nd edition, edited by J. Tooze; and Molecular Biology o/Thmor Viruses: RNA Tumor Viruses, 2nd edition, edited by R. Weiss, N. Teich, H. Varmus, and J. Coffm, by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories in 1980 and 1982. Polyoma and SV40 viruses (see the chapter by A. Levine) and adenoviruses (see the chapter by W. Doerfler) are double- stranded DNA-containing viruses. Polyoma and SV40 are struc- turally related viruses which contain a genome of approximately 5 kilo basepairs, while the DNA of adenovirus is about 7 times more complex. These DNA tumor viruses are understood at a genetic and molecular level which is comparable to our know- ledge of A and T4 bacteriophages. Retroviruses, the subject of the remaining four chapters, con- tain a single-stranded RNA genome of 5-8 kilobases.

The advances in the field of anaesthesiology and reanimation have contributed in all developed countries to the decrease in deaths occurring on the operating table (exitus in tabula), from the ratio 1: 100 (in the nineteenth century) down to approximately 1: 1000 (in the first half of the twentieth century) and finally to approxi mately 1: 10 000 (nowadays). Numerous human lives were saved not only through the intro duction of new medicine and methods but even more so by better training for the doctors and nurses who apply these new techni ques. I am happy about the splendid initiative of my student and friend Georg Kamm, which has now made these advances acces sible to the developing countries. He knows very well how to make his colleagues understand the theory and the practical side of modern anaesthesiology, under the most difficult conditions and in a completely different world, to such an extent that to day in his country all of his patients are given the benefit of the advances of medicine. There is nothing more rewarding for an academic teacher than to see how his students continue developing his ideas and spread them far and wide. I am therefore happy and proud to write this foreword for Georg Kamm, one of the pioneers of anaesthesiology in Africa."

Established clinicians and scientists as weil as students aga in tried the Wilsede experiment for three days and nights and learned from each other. In our fourth Wilsede meeting on "Modern Trends in Human Leukemia" we concentrated once again on questions re gar ding the practical application of research and its benefits to the patient. The main emphasis of leukemia research has changed since the first Wilsede meeting in 1973. Virology is no longer the sole interest. This first manuscript on cold injuries was written in the period 1945-1946 as the result of personal experience gained in the winter months of the years 1941-1943 on the Northern Front in Russia and subsequent experimental work at the "Chirurgische Uni versitatsklinik" in Breslau (Wroclav) between 1943 and 1945. The intention at the time of writing was to present a summary of our experiences, so that they might serve as a basis for further scientific and clinical work. The manuscript has continually been revised and brought up to date. For purely external reasons publication has been delayed until today. Our experience of cold preservation and of increased resistance to oxygen deficiency in chilled tissue, acquired during the winter periods of the Second World War in Russia, served as a basis for the development of local cryanaesthesia and hibernation, which retroactively furthered to a considerable degree our knowledge of cold and frost injuries. See my monograph on the biology and clinical treatment of the cold injury and general loss of temperature, which appeared separately in 1966 and discusses all biological changes. A comprehensive report on cold injuries was written in English in 1952 at the instigation of Captain A. R. Behnke jr. USA (M.C.), (not available commercially).

Die Inhalte des vorliegenden Werkes sind auf den Lehrstoff des Unterrichts zur Manuellen Therapie an den Physiotherapieschulen gemass der neuen Ausbildungs- und Prufungsverordnung abgestimmt. In einem Sonderkursus wurden die Lehrmaterialien mit Lehrkraften aus 70 Physiotherapieschulen getestet und in die vorliegende Fassung gebracht. Dem Zeichner, Herrn Poul Buckhoj, In der modernen Medizin ist das team work wurde Gelegenheit gegeben, an Anatomie- vorlesungen teilzunehmen und fUr bestimmte mehr und mehr zu einer iiblichen Arbeitsform geworden. Heutzutage wird die Forschung nur Zeichnungen zusammen mit Herrn Prof. Petren noch selten von einem einzelnen, auf sich selbst spezielle anatomische Praparate anzufertigen. Da viele Autoren an diesem Buch mitgear- gestellten Wissenschaftler betrieben, sondern als Gemeinschaftsarbeit von einer Spezialisten- beitet haben, unterscheiden sich auch die ein- gruppe durchgefUhrt. Auch bei der Abfassung zelnen Abschnitte in der Lange und den Ein- medizinischer Lehrbiicher hat sich das team zelheiten des Inhaltes. Das Buch soIl kein Lehr- work heute eingebiirgert. Dieses Buch ist das buch im landlaufigen Sinne sein. Es soIl viel- Ergebnis einer solchen Zusammenarbeit zwi- mehr in erster Linie durch die anschauliche schen Autoren, Photographen, Zeichner und Darstellungsform in leicht verstandlicher und Herausgeber. Da die verschiedenen Kapitel iibersichtlicher Weise tiber die Anwendungs- jedoch auf eine vielleicht etwas ungewohn- gebiete der Lokalanasthetika unterrichten.
