God is (Hardcover): Morris T. Johnstone God is (Hardcover)
Morris T. Johnstone
R832 Discovery Miles 8 320 Out of stock

The opening concept is that "nothing comes from nothing." Therefore God must exist. There are arguments pro and con.
This book examines concepts of God and suggests that like the blind men who went to see the elephant we know very little and often claim to know nearly all about God. It examines the man made or anthropomorphic God. It also looks at the ideas of other major world religions and seeks for common ground. It discusses principles for peacfull co-existence.
The concept of specialness is examined. It seems that many religionists think that they are special and have the inside track with the Divine. What wise Earthly Father favours one child over the rest? Even so identifying God as Father limits and therefore is a confining concept. It suggests that primitive people understood power and Fathers and kings had power so these metaphors were used to describe God. It asks if modern civilization can be satisfied with such limiting and inadequate metaphors. While science and technology have advanced concepts of the Divine have remained static. Therefore many thinkers have written the whole thing off.
The last chapter is in the form of the writers personal journey. Each chapter is complete with footnotes.

Topos Theory is an important branch of mathematical logic of interest to theoretical computer scientists, logicians and philosophers who study the foundations of mathematics, and to those working in differential geometry and continuum physics. This compendium contains material that was previously available only in specialist journals. This is likely to become the standard reference work for all those interested in the subject.

Surface and Interface Chemistry of Clay Minerals, Volume 9 (Paperback): Robert Schoonheydt, Cliff T. Johnston, Faiza Bergaya Surface and Interface Chemistry of Clay Minerals, Volume 9 (Paperback)

Surface and Interface Chemistry of Clay Minerals, Volume 9, delivers a fundamental understanding of the surface and interface chemistry of clay minerals, thus serving as a valuable resource for researchers active in the fields of materials chemistry and sustainable chemistry. Clay minerals, with surfaces ranging from hydrophilic, to hydrophobic, are widely studied and used as adsorbents. Adsorption can occur at the edges and surfaces of clay mineral layers and particles, and in the interlayer region. This diversity in properties and the possibility to tune the surface properties of clay minerals to match the properties of adsorbed molecules is the basis for study. This book requires a fundamental understanding of the surface and interface chemistry of clay minerals, and of the interaction between adsorbate and adsorbent. It is an essential resource for clay scientists, geologists, chemists, physicists, material scientists, researchers, and students.

Appraisal Processes in Emotion - Theory, Methods, Research (Hardcover): K. Scherer, A. Schorr, T. Johnstone Appraisal Processes in Emotion - Theory, Methods, Research (Hardcover)

Appraisal theory has become one of the most active aproaches in the domain of emotion psychology. The appraisal process consists of the subjective evaluation that occurs during the individual's encounter with significant events in the environment, thus determining the nature of the emotional reaction and experience. The organism's interpretation of events and situations elicits and differentiates its emotional responses, although the exact processes involved and the limits of the theory are still a matter of debate and are currently the object of active research. This volume is intended to become the primary source of information on appraisal for all those interested in emotion, from beginning graduate students to accomplished researchers in emotion psychology.

Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2005): Michael T. Johnstone, Aristidis Veves Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2005)

The cause of diabetes mellitus is metabolic in origin. However, its major clinical manifestations, which result in most of the morbidity and mortality, are a result of its vascular pathology. In fact, the American Heart Association has recently stated that, "from the point of view of cardiovascular medicine, it may be appropriate to say, diabetes is a cardiovascular disease" (1). But diabetic vascular disease is not limited to just the macrovasculature. Diabetes mellitus also affects the microcirculation with devastating results, including nephropathy, neuropathy, and retinopathy. Diabetic nephropathy is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease in the United States, while diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of new-onset blindness in working-age Americans. The importance of this text on Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease is evident by the magnitude of the population affected by diabetes mellitus. Over 10 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, while another 5 million remain undiagnosed. The impact from a public health perspective is huge and increasing. As the population of the United States grows older, more sedentary, and obese, the risk of developing diabetes and its complications will increase. Epidemiological studies have identified diabetes mellitus as a major independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Over 65% of patients with diabetes mellitus die from a cardiovascular cause. The prognosis of patients with diabetes mellitus who develop overt clinical cardiovascular disease is much worse than those cardiovascular patients free of diabetes mellitus.

Stone Spaces (Paperback, Revised): Peter T. Johnstone Stone Spaces (Paperback, Revised)
Peter T. Johnstone
R930 Discovery Miles 9 300 Out of stock

Over the last 45 years, Boolean theorem has been generalized and extended in several different directions and its applications have reached into almost every area of modern mathematics; but since it lies on the frontiers of algebra, geometry, general topology and functional analysis, the corpus of mathematics which has arisen in this way is seldom seen as a whole. In order to give a unified treatment of this rather diverse body of material, Dr Johnstone begins by developing the theory of locales (a lattice-theoretic approach to 'general topology without points' which has achieved some notable results in the past ten years but which has not previously been treated in book form). This development culminates in the proof of Stone's Representation Theorem.
