and tissue engineering of the vascular system. Topics covered
include the roles of endothelial surface glycocalyx as a
mechano-sensor and transducer for blood flow, a barrier to water
and solute transport across the vascular wall and to the
interaction between circulating cells and the vessel wall, the
roles of nuclear envelope proteins and nuclear lamina in regulating
vascular functions under blood flow-induced forces, and the roles
of smooth muscle cells and extracellular components in arterial
vasoconstriction. Other topics covered include non-surgical
vascular interventions for coronary artery diseases, genesis and
mechanisms of atherosclerotic plaque microcalcifications and human
abdominal aortic aneurysms, experiments and modelling for red blood
cell and tumor cell movement in microcirculation, transport across
the blood-brain barrier and its role in Alzheimer's disease,
mathematical models for cell survival after hyperthermia,
application of hypothermia in enhancing treatment for brain and
spinal cord injuries, and damage of eardrums due to blast waves.
This is an ideal book for biomedical engineers and researchers,
medical researchers, and students in biomedical engineering and
medical sciences.
A book that develops an understanding of practices at the very
centre of language education - the classroom. It is written for
postgraduate students in Applied Linguistics and Education, and
practitioners, whether in TESOL or other language teaching, In Part
1 the author explores key concepts in unpacking the complexity of
classroom life. In Part 2 existing research and practice are
examined through a series of research case studies. Part 3 provides
a template for research activity and suggestions for projects and
methodologies, and Part 4 collects resources for readers keen to
follow up the themes developed in the book .
The Spirit Says offers a stunning collection of articles by an
influential assemblage of scholars, all of whom lend considerable
insight to the relationship between inspiration and interpretation.
They address this otherwise intractable question with deft and
occasionally daring readings of a variety of texts from the ancient
world, including-but not limited to-the scriptures of early Judaism
and Christianity. The thrust of this book can be summed up not so
much in one question as in four: o What is the role of revelation
in the interpretation of Scripture? o What might it look like for
an author to be inspired? o What motivates a claim to the inspired
interpretation of Scripture? o Who is inspired to interpret
Scripture? More often than not, these questions are submerged in
this volume under the tame rubrics of exegesis and hermeneutics,
but they rise in swells and surges too to the surface, not just
occasionally but often. Combining an assortment of prominent
voices, this book does not merely offer signposts along the way. It
charts a pioneering path toward a model of interpretation that is
at once intellectually robust and unmistakably inspired.
This book brings together the voices of teacher educators working
in different national and educational settings. It Covers themes
such as change in teacher education practices, the influences of
context on practice, and of interculturality, to provide rich
insights into the processes and effects of second language teacher
education.
This study examines Hardy's prolonged struggle with his contemporary readers, whose bourgeois values he despised. Initially content to compromise, to provide them with congenial entertainment, Hardy resorted at first to strategies of subversion, smuggling material past his editors and finally to outspoken attack. T.R. Wright attempts to balance historical research into the response of "actual" readers and the material conditions of publishing with literary-critical analysis of the "implied" reader inscribed in the novels themselves.
This new study deals with the whole range of Gaskell's fiction,
approaching her as a deeply poetic novelist and short-story writer.
Among topics covered are women and the creation of the self, death
and personal integrity, the status of words as utterance and the
shape and meaning of individual lives. While seeing her as a
product of her age, Wright transcends narrow categorisations of her
work to read her 'whole' as a subtle exponent of the values of a
humane realism.
In recent decades, China has become a quasi-capitalist economic
powerhouse. Yet it continues to be ruled by the same Communist
Party-dominated government that has been in power since 1949. But
how has China s political system achieved such longevity? And what
does its stability tell us about the future of authoritarian versus
liberal democratic governance? In this detailed analysis of the
deeply intertwined relationship between the ruling Communist Party
and governing state, noted China expert Teresa Wright provides
insightful answers to these important questions. Though many
believe that the Chinese party-state has maintained its power
despite its communist and authoritarian features, Wright argues
that the key to its sustained success lies in its careful
safeguarding of some key communist and authoritarian
characteristics, while simultaneously becoming more open and
responsive to public participation. She contends that China s
post-Mao party-state compares well to different forms of political
rule, including liberal democratic government. It has fulfilled the
necessary functions of a stable governing regime: satisfying key
demographic groups and responding to public grievances; maintaining
economic stability and growth; and delivering public services -
without any real reduction in CCP power and influence. Questioning
current understandings of the nature, strengths, and weaknesses of
democracy and authoritarianism, this thought-provoking book will be
essential reading for all students and scholars of Chinese politics
and international relations.
This book considers the academic treatment of biblical
interpretation in the renewal movement, the fastest growing
tradition in Christendom today.
The initial chapter surveys the history of biblical
interpretation in the renewal tradition and provides a conceptual
basis for the book. In Part II, six renewal scholars outline a
proposal for the future of biblical hermeneutics in the tradition.
These authors address certain key questions. What is the role of
the Holy Spirit in biblical interpretation? What are the
distinctive presuppositions, methods and goals of renewal biblical
hermeneutics? Three prominent biblical scholars ( Craig G.
Bartholomew, James D.G. Dunn, R. Walter L. Moberly ) respond to the
proposals outlined above. These critical responses deepen the
examination of renewal biblical hermeneutics as well as increase
its appeal to biblical and theological scholars in general.
The final chapteroffers asynthesis and evaluation ofthe
accomplishments of the discussion, as well as anassessment ofthe
state of the discipline with an eye toward the future.

With support from the University of Iowa and the Office of Naval
Research. a small conference on order restricted inference was held
at the University of Iowa in Iowa City in April of 1981. There were
twenty-one participants. mostly from the midwest. and eleven talks
were presented. A highlight of the conference was a talk by D. J.
Bartholomew on. "Reflections on the past and thoughts about the
future. " The conference was especially valuable because it brought
together researchers who were thinking about related problems. A
small conference on a limited topic is one of the best ways to
stimulate research and facilitate collaboration. Because of the
success of the first conference. a second conference was organized
and held in September of 1985. This second conference was made
possible again by support from the Office of Naval Research under
Department of the Navy Contract NOOOI4-85-0161 and the University
of Iowa. There were thirty-five participants and twenty
presentations on a wide variety of topics dealing with order
restricted inference at the second conference. This volume is a
collection of fourteen of those presentations. By collecting
together and organizing the fundamental results in order restricted
inference in Statistical Inference under Order Restrictions. R. E.
Barlow. D. J. Bartholomew. J. M. Bremner and H. D. Brunk have done
much to stimulate research in this area. and so we wish to express
our gratitude to them first.
