'Transition has not been something linear for me, my joy has come
in seasons.' Now, more than ever, trans people deserve to hear
stories of joy and hope, where being trans doesn't have to be
defined by fear and dysphoria, but can be experienced through
courage, freedom, and the love and acceptance of their chosen
families. Through a series of uplifting, generous and beautifully
crafted vignettes, T. C. Oakes-Monger gently leads you through the
cycle of the seasons - beginning in Autumn and the shedding of
leaves and identity, moving through the darkness of Winter, its
cold days, and the reality of daily life, into Spring, newness, and
change, and ending with the joy of long Summer days and being out
and proud - and invites you to find similar moments of joy in your
life. Celebratory and empowering, these stories are a reminder of
the power joy can bring.
First published in 1998. This is Volume XI of the twelve in the
Sociology of Youth and Adolescence series which outlines the
problem, approach, and method around a the report of an enquiry
into the ways and means of contacting and working with unattached
young people in an inner London Borough. The importance of this
book, is in the definition of unattachment, and in the perhaps
unexpectedly wide range of implications for youth work and the
Youth Service that might follow from it. Un attachment is defined
as a conflict in expectations between those who offer the service
(clubs, youth centres and others in the Youth Service) and
those-the young people-who want and need it but who are unable or
unwilling to accept it on the conditions on which it is offered. In
describing the work that gave rise to this definition, the authors
help us to see that the conflict in expectations has its roots in a
much wider context than we had been able to see before.

A murderer's confession - devastating, unblinking, poignant,
unforgettable - which reveals a story of class, education and the
inescapable workings of destiny. Ah Hock is an ordinary, uneducated
man born in a Malaysian fishing village and now trying to make his
way in a country that promises riches and security to everyone, but
delivers them only to a chosen few. With Asian society changing
around him, like many he remains trapped in a world of poorly paid
jobs that just about allow him to keep his head above water but
ultimately lead him to murder a migrant worker from Bangladesh. In
the tradition of Camus and Houellebecq, Ah Hock's vivid and
compelling description of the years building up to this appalling
act of violence - told over several days to a local journalist
whose life has taken a different course - is a portrait of an
outsider like no other, an anti-nostalgic view of human life and
the ravages of hope. It is the work of a writer at the peak of his
powers.
