Hide and Seek With Daddy has to be the best game ever! This
charming children's book brings us out in the woods beside
seven-year-old Johnny and five-year-old Valerie as they play with
their father. The kids hear a voice in the woods saying: "One, two,
three, come and find me. I'm hiding behind you, out in the trees."
Both children shout, "Daddy!" and run into the woods. Daddy shouts
out another clue. "Four, five, six, I'm not in those sticks. I'll
give you a clue, it goes like this; take three steps forward and
one step back and look for something green and black." The children
find a green and black turtle with a note taped to its back,
saying, "You're getting warmer!" Daddy gives them more clues that
take them further into the woods. What will Daddy say next? The
final clue leads Johnny and Valerie back into the house, where
Daddy is sitting in the kitchen with his arms stretched wide for a
hug. He hands the kids their final note. Can you guess what it
reads? "Twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three, I'm happy as can be,
to have you as my children, I'm glad you found me." This is the
third book in the Johnny and Valerie series written by Terri Ward.
Her next in the series is Treasure Hunt on the Hill. She is an
occupational therapist in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. "My goal is
to help people feel joy, whether it's children being read to,
adults reading to their children or parents being inspired to have
fun with their children." Publisher's website:

The story of Tommy and Rhona, two adolescents in the early 1900's
south who must prematurely put an end to their childhood to help
support their families. Child labor is still legal despite a
national move to outlaw and millions of children, some as young as
seven or eight, labor in spirit numbing menial jobs the same long
hours as adults. Not until 1913 do the first laws banning child
labor go on the books. The boy in Tucker's story has stood before a
loom in a cotton mill from the time he turned eleven. The girl is a
beautiful gypsy princess who has told fortunes for money and food
for as long as she can remember. Yet in spite of their hopeless
circumstances, Tommy and Rhona manage to find sweet and funny
moments to behave like the children they are. Theirs is the story
of the resilience of youth and of young love blooming.
