Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made

Global Biodiversity is the most comprehensive compendium of
conservation information ever published. It provides the first
systematic report on the status, distribution, management, and
utilisation of the planet's biological wealth.
This report provides the latest evidence on the scale and impacts
of disaster displacement in Asia and the Pacific and outlines
durable solutions for prevention, response, and recovery. Globally,
Asia and the Pacific is the region most affected by disaster
displacement. Each year, the lives of millions of people are
disrupted by disasters and the scale of displacement is increasing.
This report—jointly produced by ADB and the Internal Displacement
Monitoring Center—aims to inform policy measures and practical
actions to prevent, reduce, and better manage displacement risks.
Among the solutions identified are opportunities to bolster
community resilience and the explicit inclusion of displacement in
urban planning, risk governance, and social protection.
Improved Seismic Monitoring?Improved Decision-Making, describes and
assesses the varied economic benefits potentially derived from
modernizing and expanding seismic monitoring activities in the
United States. These benefits include more effective loss avoidance
regulations and strategies, improved understanding of earthquake
processes, better engineering design, more effective hazard
mitigation strategies, and improved emergency response and
recovery. The economic principles that must be applied to determine
potential benefits are reviewed and the report concludes that
although there is insufficient information available at present to
fully quantify all the potential benefits, the annual dollar costs
for improved seismic monitoring are in the tens of millions and the
potential annual dollar benefits are in the hundreds of millions.

The October 1995 Presidential and Parliamentary elections in
Tanzania marked an important milestone in the country's transition
to multi- party democracy. It brought to an end the intense debates
during the preparation for the elections. The Tanzania Election
Monitoring Committee was the main national monitoring group that
followed the entire process nationally. This is their report,
offering a rich descriptive analysis of the important stages in the
electoral process. These include legislation, formation of
political parties, registration of voters, nomination of
candidates, campaigns, the administration of the elections, voting,
vote counting and declaration of results. The report includes an
evaluation of the freeness and fairness of the elections, and a
selected list of important documents.
