This book presents fresh insights into analogue quantum simulation.
It argues that these simulations are a new instrument of science.
They require a bespoke philosophical analysis, sensitive to both
the similarities to and the differences with conventional
scientific practices such as analogical argument, experimentation,
and classical simulation. The analysis situates the various forms
of analogue quantum simulation on the methodological map of modern
science. In doing so, it clarifies the functions that analogue
quantum simulation serves in scientific practice. To this end, the
authors introduce a number of important terminological
distinctions. They establish that analogue quantum 'computation'
and 'emulation' are distinct scientific practices and lead to
distinct forms of scientific understanding. The authors also
demonstrate the normative value of the computation vs. emulation
distinction at both an epistemic and a pragmatic level. The volume
features a range of detailed case studies focusing on: i) cold atom
computation of many-body localisation and the Higgs mode; ii)
photonic emulation of quantum effects in biological systems; and
iii) emulation of Hawing radiation in dispersive optical media.
Overall, readers will discover a normative framework to isolate and
support the goals of scientists undertaking analogue quantum
simulation and emulation. This framework will prove useful to both
working scientists and philosophers of science interested in
cutting-edge scientific practice.
Word of God, words of men. The book presents many aspects of the
phenomenon of translation and commentary work of the Bible in the
Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 16th and 17th centuries. It
contains studies of eminent scholars as well as of some young
adepts, coming mainly from Poland, but also from Lithuania and
Czech Republic. The texts present various aspects of the researches
conducted on this phenomenon nowadays. As it was an exceptional
movement, extremely varied and long-time lasting, it would be
difficult to offer its complete synthesis in one volume. Though,
the exhaustive presentation of the historical and linguistic
contexts allows the reader to understand the phenomenon.
Intensified interest in translations of the Bible is closely
connected with the interest in the Polish language, its literary
expression as well as its grammatical and orthographic
standardisation that occurred just in the same time. The
intellectual activity related to the Bible contributed
simultaneously to the development of the Polish literary language
and even inspired the translations of the sacred texts of other
religions present in the country. Moreover, contacts between
different languages of Central and Eastern European area, where
many attempts of new translations appeared, are very important. A
quick rise of the different Reformation movements contributed to a
"natural" need for new translations and commentaries to be used by
community members. These new currents, first easily accepted and
spread in the country, even when suppressed, could not stop this
activity, and later new Catholic translations and commentaries of
the post-Trident period, both in Polish and Lithuanian, proved it.
Big part of study is also dedicated to particular typographical
realizations of this activity and an interesting example of the
musical expression directly inspired by the biblical translation,
is also provided.
The first part of the book deals with several aspects of different
viruses : viral structure, function, replication and interplay
between the virus and the host. Six viruses are used as examples,
four RNA viruses (HTLV-I, HIV-1, MMTV and coxsackievirus B4) and
two DNA viruses (EBV and KSHV). The second part of the book is
devoted to the use of the knowledge on viruses to practical
applications and also to the characterisation of HIV inhibitors.
Reviewing the results of research on different viruses is important
since, although viruses possess vast degrees of complexity, they
also share similar features. In addition, viruses are more and more
used as models to solve molecular biology problems.
Do we need to reconsider scientific methodology in light of modern
physics? Has the traditional scientific method become outdated,
does it need to be defended against dangerous incursions, or has it
always been different from what the canonical view suggests? To
what extent should we accept non-empirical strategies for
scientific theory assessment? Many core aspects of contemporary
fundamental physics are far from empirically well-confirmed. There
is controversy on the epistemic status of the corresponding
theories, in particular cosmic inflation, the multiverse, and
string theory. This collection of essays is based on the high
profile workshop 'Why Trust a Theory?' and provides
interdisciplinary perspectives on empirical testing in fundamental
physics from leading physicists, philosophers and historians of
science. Integrating different contemporary and historical
positions, it will be of interest to philosophers of science and
physicists, as well as anyone interested in the foundations of
contemporary science.

The mad Marquis de Saint-Imier attempts to blackmail France and
install a reign of mass terror through his control of atomic forces
and electromagnetic waves. But against him stand the indomitable
Professor Mazelier and his assistant Monsieur Gribal. Who will
prevail in the ultimate battle against the Radio-Terror? Eugene
Thebault's Radio-Terror (1929) had the honor of being one of the
very few French works selected by Hugo Gernsback to be translated
by none other than Fletcher Pratt, the well-known author of The
Well of the Unicorn, and it was published in 1933 in Wonder
Stories. This new edition includes Frank R. Paul's original
illustrations and an introduction by SF scholar Jean-Marc
Lofficier.
