This book introduces the profound reflections of Xavier Zubiri
(1898-1983) on the history of philosophy to English-speaking
audiences. As a philosopher who rethought much of philosophy and
theology, Zubiri felt it necessary to be in continuous dialogue
with earlier thinkers both to avoid past mistakes and to extract
all that is valuable from them. The theme of the present book is
the transcendental in Western philosophy and how a firm grasp of it
reveals underlying unity in Western philosophy, but also
fundamental problems that Zubiri believed require a complete
rethinking of certain basic notions and theories. Zubiri develops
this theme by analyzing the work of six major philosophers:
Aristotle, St. Thomas, Descartes, Leibniz, Kant, and Hegel. To
conclude, he sketches his own resolution of the problems of Western
philosophy, a subject addressed in greater depth in his major work,
Sentient Intelligence. This translation was made possible by a
grant from the Spanish Ministry of Culture.

Man and God is the first of three major works by Xavier Zubiri
(1898-1983) on the subject of theology. All three books are
posthumous publications, based on lectures given by Zubiri, a
famous contemporary Spanish philosopher. Man and God is divided
into three parts; the first part serving as an essential
introduction to the core of the work. This section, together with
the introductions by translators Joaquin Redondo and Dr. Thomas B.
Fowler provide the reader with the necessary preparation to enjoy
the philosophical riches of this book. Here, Zubiri suggests that
God is transcendent in all things; therefore, by experiencing the
world man has the fundamental experience of God. Translators
Redondo, Fowler, and Dr. Nelson Orringer have sought to render the
original text into natural and readable English while maintaining
fidelity to the original work. This translation is the product of
three experts in the thought of Zubiri, with the final revision
given here collaboration between Dr. Fowler and Dr. Orringer. This
translation was made possible by a grant from the Spanish Ministry
of Culture.

This biography of the philosopher John Locke (1632-1704) was
published in the first series of English Men of Letters in 1880.
Its author, Thomas Fowler (1832-1904) held the posts of Wykeham
Professor of Logic, President of Corpus Christi College, and
Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University; the editor of the series,
John Morley, had been his pupil. The influence of Locke is
pervasive in many fields - theology, education, psychology,
economics and political theory as well as philosophy - and Fowler
analyses the effect of his writings in five chapters (one dedicated
to the Essay Concerning Human Understanding) as well as giving a
chronological account of Locke's life from his obscure beginnings
through his time at Oxford, his role in the household of the earl
of Shaftesbury, and his two periods of travel in Europe, to a
position at the heart of political and intellectual life in
Restoration England.
