This book is designed to usher the reader into the realm of semiotic studies. It analyzes the most important approaches to semiotics as they have developed over the last hundred years out of philosophy, linguistics, psychology, and biology. As a science of sign processes, semiotics investigates all types of com munication and information exchange among human beings, animals, plants, internal systems of organisms, and machines. Thus it encompasses most of the subject areas of the arts and the social sciences, as well as those of biology and medicine. Semiotic inquiry into the conditions, functions, and structures of sign processes is older than anyone scientific discipline. As a result, it is able to make the underlying unity of these disciplines apparent once again without impairing their function as specializations. Semiotics is, above all, research into the theoretical foundations of sign oriented disciplines: that is, it is General Semiotics. Under the name of Zei chenlehre, it has been pursued in the German-speaking countries since the age of the Enlightenment. During the nineteenth century, the systematic inquiry into the functioning of signs was superseded by historical investigations into the origins of signs. This opposition was overcome in the first half of the twentieth century by American Semiotic as well as by various directions of European structuralism working in the tradition of Semiology. Present-day General Semiot ics builds on all these developments."

Der Vordergrund und die Tiefendimension Zwei Aspekte dieses Buches sind hervorzuheben: der exemplari sche Charakter und die behutsame Methode der Mitteilung. Exem plarisch, weil die subtile Untersuchung einer konkreten und speziel len Frage mit praktischen Konsequenzen fur die Gesundheitspolitik dem aufmerksamen Leser zugleich deutlich macht, wie problema tisch viele seiner Vorstellungen uber seine Wirklichkeit, seine Bezie hungen zu den Mitmenschen und zu sich selbst sind; behutsam, weil diese Aufklarung gewissermassen zwischen den Zeilen ge schieht. Der Autor uberlasst es dem Leser, ob er den Hintergrund wahrnehmen will, der sich als Konsequenz der Untersuchungen ab zeichnet, oder ob er sich mit dem Vordergrund der mitgeteilten Er gebnisse begnugt. Auf eine kurze Formel gebracht: Das Buch kon frontiert den Leser mit dem Faktum der Einsamkeit des Menschen und dem Ungenugen der Sprache als Mittel, diese Einsamkeit zu uberwinden, aber es lasst ihm die Moglichkeit, sich dieser Konfron tation nicht auszusetzen. Es bleibt dem Leser uberlassen, ob er aus der Darstellung der Schwierigkeiten, mit denen eine Untersuchung uber subjektive Krankheitsvorstellungen zu kampfen hat, die Konsequenz zieht, dass Worte allein nicht ausreichen, wenn wir mit unseren Mitmen schen Informationen uber das austauschen wollen, was uns bewegt, was wir denken und was wir in den Situationen erleben, die unsere Wirklichkeit konstituieren; dass Kommunikation auch auf ausser sprachliche Mittel zuruckgreifen muss und dass Gesprache, die die sen Namen verdienen, Strategien erfordern, welche sich dem per sonlichen Kern des Mitgeteilten behutsam nahern und dabei auch die aussersprachlichen Mitteilungen aufmerksam registrieren."

Wie erleben Menschen ihren Korper, und wie konnen sie dieses Erleben sich selbst und anderen sprachlich vermitteln? Unsere Sprache ist fast ausschlieBlich optisch-taktil. Tone, Geriiche oder Geschmackserlebnisse konnen wir nur mit Hilfe von Metaphern wiedergeben, die aus dem optischen oder taktilen Bereich stammen. Wer Beschreibungen musikalischer Erlebnisse, etwa eines Konzerts oder Beschreibungen von Geschmacksqualitiiten verschiedener Weins orten stu diert, kann dabei interessante Erfahrungen machen. Noch groBere Schwierigkeiten haben wir, wenn wir versuchen korpereigene Erlebnisse zu beschreiben. Hunger, Sattigung, Durst, Schmerzen oder Ubelkeit, lassen sich weder sehen noch tasten. Wir sagen, daB Schmerzen "scharf', "dumpf' oder "reiBend" sind, daB sie "an-oder abschwellen," daB ihre Intensitat ertraglich oder unertraglich ist, und versuchen damit Hinweise zu geben, die einem anderen ermoglichen soIlen, sich ein Bild zu machen was wir von oder in unserem Korper erleben. - Unser Korper sind wir selbst, und die Beziehung, die wir zu unserem Korper haben, ist von der Beziehung zu uns selbst nicht zu trennen. Es ist ein anthropologisch bedeutsames Faktum, daB unsere Sprache uns so wenig entge genkommt, wenn wir versuchen, uns iiber diese Beziehung Rechenschaft zu geben."
