A Research Agenda for Global Crime (Paperback): Tim Hall, Vincenzo Scalia A Research Agenda for Global Crime (Paperback)
Tim Hall, Vincenzo Scalia
R977 Discovery Miles 9 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Elgar Research Agendas outline the future of research in a given area. Leading scholars are given the space to explore their subject in provocative ways, and map out the potential directions of travel. They are relevant but also visionary. It is becoming more important in the modern, globalized period to understand the power of illicit and illegal acts and actors in shaping our world. Opening with chapters that look across the diverse terrain of global crime, this Research Agenda moves on to consider key specific areas, including: organised crime, cyber crime, war crimes, terrorism, state and private violence, riots and political protest, prisons, sport and crime and counterfeit goods. Offering both critical reviews of key theories and in-depth case studies, this Research Agenda challenges the notion that criminal acts in a global age are solely the preserve of organised criminal groups, highlighting the role of other actors including governments, armies and corporations. A vital source of reference for criminology and sociology undergraduate, and post-graduate students, as well as those from a host of other social science disciplines, this Research Agenda will provoke thought and discussion across these topics. It will also be of great benefit for policy makers and practitioners working to better understand and combat transnational crime.

Urban Futures - Critical Commentaries on shaping Cities (Hardcover): Tim Hall, Malcolm Miles Urban Futures - Critical Commentaries on shaping Cities (Hardcover)
Tim Hall, Malcolm Miles
R4,216 Discovery Miles 42 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Urban Futures brings together commentaries from a wide range of contemporary disciplines and fields relevant to urban culture, form and society. The book concerns cities in the broadest sense, not just as buildings and spaces, but also as processes and events or sites of occupation, in which meanings are constructed in many ways. The contributors draw on their specialist areas of research to inform current debate, but they also speculate as to how cities will be shaped in the 21st century.
Specific areas of research include homeless people's organisations and restoration ecology in brownfield sites in the USA, post-industrial urban landscapes, post-industrial economics, tourism and cultural planning. The book allows each writer to state their own conclusions, but together they suggest that tomorrow's cities will, while remaining locations of difference and contestation, be rapidly evolving systems in which dwellers assume increasing responsibilities and power.

The Illicit and Illegal in Regional and Urban Governance and Development - Corrupt Places (Hardcover): Francesco Chiodelli, Tim... The Illicit and Illegal in Regional and Urban Governance and Development - Corrupt Places (Hardcover)
Francesco Chiodelli, Tim Hall, Ray Hudson
R4,206 Discovery Miles 42 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Discussions of the illicit and the illegal have tended to be somewhat restricted in their disciplinary range, to date, and have been largely confined to the literatures of anthropology, criminology, policing and, to an extent, political science. However, these debates have impinged little on cognate literatures, not least those of urban and regional studies which remain almost entirely undisturbed by such issues. This volume aims to open up debates across a range of cognate disciplines. The Illicit and Illegal in Regional and Urban Governance and Development is a multidisciplinary volume that aims to open up these debates, extending them empirically and questioning the dominant discussions of governance and development that have been rooted largely or entirely in the realm of licit and legal actors. The book investigates these issues with reference to a variety of different geographical contexts, including, but not limited to, places traditionally considered to be associated with illegal activities and extensive illicit markets, such as some regions in the so-called Global South. The chapters consider the ways in which these questions deeply affect the daily lives of several cities and regions in some advanced countries. Their comparative perspectives will demonstrate that the illicit and the illegal are an underappreciated structural aspect of current urban and regional governance and development across the globe. The book is an edited collection of research-informed essays, which will primarily be of interest to those taking advanced undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses in human geography, urban and regional planning and a range of social science disciplines that have an interest in urban and regional issues and issues related to crime and corruption.

PACES for the MRCP - with 250 Clinical Cases (Paperback, 3rd edition): Tim Hall PACES for the MRCP - with 250 Clinical Cases (Paperback, 3rd edition)
Tim Hall
R1,831 Discovery Miles 18 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 3rd edition of PACES for the MRCP has been fully revised and updated throughout to retain its pole position as the textbook to accompany core medical training (CMT) and prepare candidates for success in the Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills and a future specialty career.

Features

Fully revised for the new Station 5 and completely updated throughout.

Promotes understanding and deeper learning of modern medicine applicable to PACES and the specialist registrar.

Emphasis on clinical assessment - history-taking, examination and communication skills - equipping candidates with appropriate differential diagnoses from which to develop the right diagnosis.

Encourages candidates to question "why" a diagnosis has arisen and consider its consequences. For example, 'Heat failure' is a not a diagnosis until a candidate has considered the differential diagnoses of breathlessness and decided why heart failure is most likely, and then considered its cause (not always ischaemic heart disease), its presentation (acute, chronic, left or right ventricular or both) and, most importantly, the effects of it and its treatments on a patient's life.

This 3rd edition of PACES for the MRCP continues to provide fully revised, up-to-date, evidence-based coverage of investigations and treatments. Whilst the emphasis of PACES is on clinical skills, candidates who understand when, for example, a patient with rheumatoid arthritis might benefit from a biologic agent and how this will influence inflammatory disease, is better equipped for success.

From reviews of the previous edition:

'Hall's "PACES for the MRCP" is excellent. It is easy to follow, carefully laid out and covers all conditions likely to appear in each station of the exam. The author not only explains examination techniques and clinical signs, but also goes that step further to ensure the reader really understands each topic, using clinical examples, question and answer/discussion sections as well as detailed illustrations. Where this text also outshines the others is with the inclusion of chapters covering the History Taking and Communication/Ethics stations of the exam. The scenarios are "spot on" and give the reader plenty of examples to work through. The Neurology section is brilliant.' Overall: An excellent and up-to-date text, this is the new MRCP "Bible" - don't sit your exam without it.

'Looking through the book is a visual delight and there is lots of excellent information there.'

'Well laid out, easy to read and utterly relevant. Also serves as a useful reference tool post-membership too. Buy it '

Really good book. The clinical stations are well covered - in particular this book is worth buying just for the neuro section alone which is really easy to read and understand and gives you a great framework for approaching clinical cases (this is also what countless colleagues of mine have cited as the book's main selling point )

'This is an excellent book. It is very well-written, clear, factually correct and actually means that you know enough to hold a conversation with the examiners. Apparently most people assume they will pass the Hx and comm stations but commonly fail them and this book is excellent for those with lots of information and cases to practice. I really feel that this book has transformed the paces market as it is so much better than the others.'

'Hall's refreshingly relevant and readable textbook is vital to successful PACES preparation and covers all sections faced in the exam with good detail.'

R250 Discovery Miles 2 500 Ships in 2 - 4 working days

History of Medicine: All That Matters identifies sixteen different ages of medicine, each with its own challenges, solutions, developments and remarkable stories. As well as making for a pacy and readable narrative, this innovative approach enables the reader to understand the context of medical developments without losing sight of their sheer excitement, importance and (at times) serendipity. Dr Tim Hall is both an award-winning writer and a practical medic, and he brings to the history of medicine both the writer's ability to find and tell a story, and the medic's ability to understand and explain the science. The result is the best short history of medicine written for many years. This accessible and informative book will appeal both to students and general readers, giving a fascinating introduction to the history of medicine - and what matters most about it.

A fundamental guide for anyone with an interest in mentoring and transformational learning, this book is a must-have for the talent management bookshelf.

Meet Bert Shambles, a perpetually confused young man whose life continually mirrors his surname. He is stuck back in his suburban Long Island hometown, enduring a three-year suspended sentence for an act of chivalry gone terribly wrong. He works part-time at a church thrift shop and makes extra money by selling "dead stock"-vintage clothes that have never been worn-to a local boutique. On a routine pick up for the thrift shop, Bert learns that the widow of a recently deceased pro golfer is offering a reward for the return of her dead husband's favorite putter-and an even bigger reward for proof that her husband was murdered. Bert jumps at the chance, and soon finds himself being chased by a violent, van-driving maniac, romantically involved with a mobster's daughter, and quite possibly being set up to take the fall by his probation officer and crazy ex-girlfriend. As the forces of good and evil close in around him, Bert must race to clear his name and discover the truth so he doesn't wind up in prison...or worse. Filled with twists, turns, and unforgettable characters, and propelled by a truly lovable hero and wicked sense of humor, Dead Stock heralds the arrival of a wonderful new mystery series.

More than simply examining the new geographical patterns forming within cities, this third edition of Urban Geography also investigates the way geographers have sought to make sense of this urban transformation. Tim Hall critically synthesizes key literatures in the following areas:

  • approaches to urban geography
  • economic geography of the city
  • urban policy
  • new urban forms and landscapes
  • impacts of urban change
  • sustainability and the city.

Hall's revised third edition features enhanced pedagogy including boxed discussion points, end of chapter research questions, and an introductory chapter which outlines the importance of urban geography. Additionally a new concluding chapter encourages students to apply what they have read to their own experiences of cities and helps them to apply these ideas to a dissertation. An important volume, this revised edition is an essential read for students and scholars of urban geography.
