Discover the thrilling exploits of this unlikely hero in China's
most famous traditional novel. This classic Chinese epic tells the
story of the Monkey King, his incredible origin and downfall, and
his epic quest to redeem himself with his trusted companions, as
they face fantastic foes, demons, and monsters and during their
travels to the Western paradise. The talented, wily Monkey King was
used to getting what he wanted--unimaginable strength, eternal
life, even a position in the Celestial Realm with the gods. But his
mischief gets him into trouble, the Monkey King finds himself
wanting to be good and strong enough to help the monk Xuanzang on
his mission to bring Buddhist Scriptures--and enlightenment--to
China. Readers will thrill to Timothy Richard's retelling of the
Monkey King's exploits, whether in the Dragon King's underwater
castle, the Halls of the Dead, or the palace of Buddha himself.
Featuring a detailed introduction by scholar Daniel Kane, this
edition of The Money King's Amazing Adventures is sure to delight

The reason for writing this book, generally speaking, is to induce
all living beings to depart from the way of all sorrow and to
obtain the highest happiness, instead of seeking the glitter of
fame and the wealth of this world. It is to make clear the
fundamental idea of the incarnate god (Tathagata) in man, and to
lead all beings in the right way, avoiding error. It is to lead
those ripe in goodness to the Mahayana faith without failing and to
enable those ripe in goodness to continue in the Mahayana faith
without failing. Contents: select bibliography; awakening of faith;
translators supplementary matter.

1910. The objectives of this book are twofold. Firstly, the author
hopes to dispel some of the confusion of thought regarding the
relation of Buddhism to Christianity. On this subject, the
translation of "The Awakening Faith in the Mahayana School" throws
the most important light. Secondly, he hopes to show that in "The
Essence of the Lotus Scripture," as interpreted by Chinese and
Japanese "initiated" Buddhists, we find the same teaching as in the
Gospel of St. John in regard to life, light and love, a teaching
which forms a wonderful bridge crossing the chasm between Eastern
and Western religion and civilization.
