It has become a truism that we all think in the narrative mode, both in everyday life and in science. But what does this mean precisely? Scholars tend to use the term ‘narrative’ in a broad sense, implying not only event-sequencing but also the representation of emotions, basic perceptual processes or complex analyses of data sets. The volume addresses this blind spot by using clear selection criteria: only non-fictional texts by experts are analysed through the lens of both classical and postclassical narratology – from Aristotle to quantum physics and from nineteenth-century psychiatry to early childhood psychology; they fall under various genres such as philosophical treatises, case histories, textbooks, medical reports, video clips, and public lectures. The articles of this volume examine the central but continuously shifting role that event-sequencing plays within scholarly and scientific communication at various points in history – and the diverse functions it serves such as eye witnessing, making an argument, inferencing or reasoning. Thus, they provide a new methodological framework for both literary scholars and historians of science and medicine.

This anthology presents the results of the Second International Colloquium of the Narratology Research Group (Hamburg University). It engages in the exploration of approaches that broaden Narratology's realm. The contributions illustrate the transcendence of traditional models common to Narratology. They also reflect on the relevance of such a 'going beyond' as seen in more general terms: What interrelation can be observed between re-definition of object domain and re-definition of method? What potential interfaces with other methods and disciplines does the proposed innovation offer? Finally, what are the repercussions of the proposed innovation in terms of Narratology's self-definition? The innovative volume facilitates the inter-methodological debate between Narratology and other disciplines, enabling the conceptualization of a Narratology beyond traditional Literary Criticism.

This book addresses itself to the concept of the implied author, which has been the cause of controversy in cultural studies for some fifty years. The opening chapters examine the introduction of the concept in Wayne C. Bootha (TM)s a oeRhetoric of Fictiona and the discussion of the concept in narratology and in the theory and practice of interpretation.The final chapter develops proposals for clarifying or replacing the concept.

The Narratologiaseries publishes state-of-the-art monographs and collective volumes devoted to modern narrative theory and its historical reconstruction in all the philological disciplines. It is the first narratological forum of its kind in Germany. In addition to literary texts, the series focuses on narration in everyday contexts, in pictorial media, in film and in the new media as well as on narration in historiography, ethnology, medicine, and the law. The series publishes in German and English. All volumes are peer reviewed by two anonymous assessors.

Die einzelnen Studien dieser Open Access-Monographie (zu Werken u.a. von A. Andersch, Th. Bernhard, H. Böll, M. Frisch, G. Grass, H. Risse, A. Schmidt, O.F. Walter und G. Wohmann) geben in der Summe einen Überblick über die Variabilität, mit der das Verfahren narrativer Unzuverlässigkeit in der deutschsprachigen Literatur der Nachkriegszeit von 1945 bis 1969 realisiert wurde. Auf diese Weise werden nicht nur die verfahrenstechnischen Möglichkeiten in systematischer Hinsicht ausgeleuchtet, sondern auch die narrativen Abdrücke vermessen, mit denen das Verfahren diese literaturgeschichtliche Phase geprägt hat. Zur Verdeutlichung des literaturhistorischen Zusammenhangs schließt die Untersuchung einzelne Werke von Autoren der älteren Generation (Th. Mann, H. Broch, R. Neumann und A. Seghers) ein und endet mit einem Ausblick auf das unzuverlässige Erzählen in der DDR-Literatur.

Das Vorhaben der Komiktheorie ist in den Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften in die Krise geraten. Was komisch ist, so wird hier weithin angenommen, das liegt im Auge des Betrachters und entzieht sich darum einer Bestimmung mit allgemeinem Anspruch. The volume presents an introduction to the work of the writer Leo Perutz (1882a "1957). Each of the ten chapters deals with one of Perutza (TM) novels, from Die dritte Kugel [The third bullet] through to Der Judas des Leonardo [Leonardoa (TM)s Judas]. In addition to the textual analyses, the volume contains a hitherto unpublished novella and a comprehensive bibliography. In its approach, the volume makes a case for a way of dealing with literary texts which combines structuralist and hermeneutical traditions. Each of the chapters proceeds from a reconstruction of the structure of a text to its interpretation.

Dieser im Open Access erscheinende Band nimmt eine bislang kaum beachtete Tendenz der Nachkriegsepik in den Blick:"Ich bin nicht Stiller!" heisst es in Max Frischs Roman gleich zu Beginn des ersten Teils, der den Titel "Stillers Aufzeichnungen im Gefangnis" tragt. Der das sagt, nennt sich White, wird aber von seiner Umgebung fur Stiller gehalten. Stiller ist mit seinem provokanten Beginn vielleicht der markanteste unter den unzuverlassig erzahlten Romanen der deutschsprachigen Nachkriegsliteratur, von denen im Band einige zwischen 1945 und den 1970er Jahren veroeffentlichte vorgestellt und analysiert werden, darunter Texte von Friedrich Durrenmatt, Hugo Loetscher, Peter Weiss, Alfred Andersch, Arno Schmidt, Uwe Johnson, Gunter de Bruyn und Fred Wander; aber auch von alteren Autoren, die noch nach dem Krieg publiziert haben, wie Leo Perutz und Thomas Mann. Ein Schwerpunkt der Auswahl liegt darin, die Variabilitat des Verfahrens zu zeigen und den theoretischen Randbereich des Begriffs 'narrative Unzuverlassigkeit' auszuleuchten. Er erweist sich als heuristisch fruchtbares Analysetool, mit dem auch Texte gewinnbringend untersucht werden koennen, die nicht im strengen Sinne unzuverlassig erzahlt sind.

The book examines the work of the Austrian Jewish writer Ernst Weiss (1882a "1940), which has only recently been regaining the recognition it was accorded in the inter-war years. A critical study of Weiss' most important texts, from his first novel Die Galeere [The Galley] (1913) through to his novel Der Augenzeuge [The Eye-Witness] written in exile in 1939 gives an overview of the development of his complete works, of its guiding ideas, striking changes of direction, central influences and position in the history of literature.
