A local biker-gang leader (Mickey Rourke), despite reforming his ways, is still the hero of local adolescents. His younger brother (Matt Dillon) idolises him, even though his mentor strives to persuade him that he has done nothing to be proud of. Shot in black and white (with occasional touches of colour), this is an atmospheric rites-of-passage tale with a musical score by Stewart Copeland and featuring many members of the so-called eighties 'Brat Pack'.
In 1987, Roy Orbison crowned his critical rehabilitation with this concert in Los Angeles, where he runs through his greatest hits with the help of some famous friends. Those joining the Big O for such classics as 'Only the Lonely', 'Crying', 'It's Over' and 'Oh, Pretty Woman' include Jackson Browne, T-Bone Burnett, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, Steven Soles, J.D. Souther, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits and Jennifer Warnes.
A collection of wildly inventive portraits of musician Tom Waits, the result of a 30-year collaboration with photographer and illustrator Matt Mahurin This visually arresting book is a testament to the unique collaboration, going back three decades, between the photographer and illustrator Matt Mahurin and the musician Tom Waits. Having shot magazine portraits, album covers, and music videos of Waits, Mahurin was inspired to resurrect 100 dormant film negatives as a jumping off point to explore his own surreal, poetic, and occasion ally dark vision. The images vary from traditional por traits to ones that capture Waits in concert-but the majority are richly imagined scenes in which Waits is more muse than musician. In addition to the diverse images, the book includes a foreword by Waits, an essay by Mahurin on their longtime collaboration, and 20 original paintings, drawings, photographs, and digital images inspired by Waits's song titles.
(The Little Black Songbook). Jim Jarmusch's black and white urban comedy features a series of separate vignettes, all based around characters (most of them famous) sitting around drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes and discussing life. Originally released as three separate shorts, the main narrative strands feature famous faces including Steve Buscemi, Roberto Benigni and musicians Iggy Pop and Tom Waits. These are interspersed with sketches featuring luminaries as diverse as Bill Murray, Steve Coogan, Cate Blanchett and the Wu-Tang Clan. This full-length version was screened at the 2003 Venice Film Festival.
Francis Ford Coppola's big budget version of Bram Stoker's classic vampire novel. Victorian London provides the stalking ground for the lovelorn Transylvanian Prince Vlad (Gary Oldman), feeding off human blood as he seeks out the beautiful Mina (Winona Ryder), a reincarnation of his lost love Elisabeta. Mina is also courted by gentleman estate agent Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves), whose chum Doctor Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkins) wants to put an end to this vampire business once and for all.
Photographer Anders Petersen was hanging out at a dive bar on the Reeperbahn in Hamburg in 1968 when someone grabbed his camera from the table where he was sitting and started taking pictures. Petersen used the opportunity to photograph the culprit—and the rest of the bar’s motley crew of patrons. The resulting project is one of the most revered photobooks of all time, a celebration of a gritty city at the tail end of the sixties, and the cornerstone of Petersen’s storied career. The images have become classics of their genre; Tom Waits used one for the cover of his legendary album Rain Dogs. Their candidness and authenticity remain as eloquent today as when they were first published in 1978. This sumptuously produced reissue features a new foreword by Waits, and is certain to find a new audience, who will appreciate the stunning analog photography and its elegiac collective portrait of the fringes of society.
Fantasy adventure directed by Terry Gilliam. Christopher Plummer stars as Dr Parnassus, leader of the extraordinary Imaginarium: a travelling theatre where members of the audience are given the irresistible opportunity to go beyond reality by means of a magical mirror and explore the limitless realms of their imaginations. But despite his amazing gift for guiding the imaginations of others, Parnassus harbours a dark secret: years before he made a pact with the devil in order to buy himself immortality. When the devil appears to collect his payment - Parnassus's beautiful 16-year-old daughter Valentina (Lily Cole) - Parnassus and his troupe, now joined by the mysterious shape-shifting Tony (variously portrayed by Heath Ledger, in his last ever performance, Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell), embark on a wild and surreal journey through parallel worlds to save the girl and undo the mistakes of the past.
