History Wars and the Classroom - Global Perspectives (Hardcover, New): Tony Taylor, Robert Guyver History Wars and the Classroom - Global Perspectives (Hardcover, New)
Tony Taylor, Robert Guyver
R2,998 Discovery Miles 29 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

ABOUT THE BOOK The book is entitled History Wars and the Classroom: Global Perspectives and examines how ten separate countries have experienced debates and disputes over the contested nature of the subject, for example the 'Black Armband' and 'Whitewash' factions in Australia who adopt opposingly celebratory or denigratory views of Australian history, especially when evaluating episodes of poor racial relations. There are also tensions between traditional/patriotic views of history teaching and reformed or 'new' history. There are issues of political control of the curriculum and parallel issues of who writes it (very topical in England at the moment over two expat 'big picture' historians who work at Harvard and Columbia (Niall Ferguson and Simon Schama)). ENDORSEMENTS: "An important collection for anyone seeking to understand the incendiary nature of the history curriculum across the globe." Sam Wineburg, Margaret Jacks Professor of Education and History, Stanford University, USA. "A powerfully and impressively wide-ranging collection of essays, which vividly remind us that the debates on the teaching of history are global rather than merely national". Sir David Cannadine, Dodge Professor of History, Princeton University, USA. CONTENTS: Acknowledgements. Introduction, Tony Taylor and Robert Guyver. Preface Peter Seixas. Legacies, Ruptures and Inertias: History in the Argentine School System, Maria Paula Gonzalez. Under Siege from Right and Left: A Tale of the Australian School History Wars, Tony Taylor. "We Were Allowed to Disagree, Because We Couldn't Agree on Anything": Seventeen Voices in Canadian Debates over History Education, Ruth Sandwell. Counters (Hardcover): Tony Taylor Counters (Hardcover)
Tony Taylor
R532 Discovery Miles 5 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Set during the turbulent era of the Vietnam War, "Counters" is a quirky, thrilling story of air combat and of the young fighter pilots who blend the harsh reality of war with youth's untamed urges.

As the pilot of a sleek F-4C Phantom II, self-doubting Lieutenant Steve Mylder fights for his life in the skies above Vietnam in 1967 but battles for his soul against the Red Baron of his imagination. His cocky friend Avery-womanizer and master of the art of combat seduction-thunders fifty feet over a North Vietnamese beach, looks down, locks eyes with an improbable woman, and falls into hopeless love.

Steve and Avery count their missions, hoping against the odds that they'll make it back home alive instead of in a body bag. But liberating the recklessness in their souls is sometimes the only way to deal with the unknown, and the two friends soon realize that growing up is a lot harder than they thought.

In "Counters," humor and whimsy counteract with authentic details of air combat brought to life by former air force pilot Tony Taylor, illuminating a brooding yet fanciful look at the hormones and "warmones" that impel young men to war and stupidity.

To Live... - A gruesome and riveting true story... (Paperback): Toni Taylor To Live... - A gruesome and riveting true story... (Paperback)

There is a fine line between love and hate, pain and pleasure. My life cross's each of those lines, but to the very extreme. My life story has been called gruesome, riveting, exciting, sorrowful and tragic. I want to be able to add to that description; beautiful, inspirational and worth living. That is going to be a hard task considering the way I started out my life, and now the way I'm ending it. My mother was a hard core drug user that exposed my brothers and me to unspeakable tortures, famine, physical abuse, sexual abuse and mental anguish. Each day life brought things to us that most only see in their worst nightmares. I had become proud of the fact that I picked myself up, and moved on. Considering what I came from, I accomplished a lot. I got a business degree when I turned eighteen. I bought a home, married and had children. Once I began my life as an adult, life threw something else at me. After the birth of my fourth child, it became very clear why I had continually been sick for most of my life. We always say we'd like to know what it is that is causing so much pain and illness. If we just knew, then maybe we can fix it. What happens when you finally find out, and realize there is no fixing it? That each day is going to be worst than the last, and there is nothing anyone can do. I got divorced, lost my children, my home and every ounce of hope I had in me. I did things that I normally never would have done, because finally I had given up. Through out my entire life I always kept the hope that it's going to get better. Finally I've realized that it's not going to get better. It's only going to get worse. With all that in mind, I wake up every day and search for a cure. A cure for the emptiness that has filled my heart, a cure for the diseases that has taken my life, and a cure for the torment that scratches at my soul. I hope in reading my book you'll see how drugs can drastically affect our lives; that abuse is never ok and it's always better to have loved and lost, than not to love at all...

Denial is the first book to draw together the ideological and psychological elements involved in historical denial. Tony Taylor surveys major cases in 20th- and 21st-century historical denial that illustrate the nature of prejudice and how it relates to techniques of the instigators of denial, including their use of popular media and the Internet. Among the issues canvassed are denial and the Armenian atrocities as a governmental phenomenon; Holocaust denial in Australia and overseas as a racist phenomenon; Stalinist denial by Marxist historians post-1945 as an ideological phenomenon; Japanese ultra-nationalist denial from the 1960s to date as a cultural phenomenon; Serbian denial of 1990s Balkan atrocities as an ethnic phenomenon, and others. At a time when most debates seem to accept the arguments of the deniers at face value the book will focus on the pathology of denial as an abuse of history through wilful distortion of events and eager self-deception. Denial is also now a major online industry: hate/denial/conspiracy sites have proliferated in the past ten years, a development complicated by new technological developments such as blogging, the strategic diversion of readers from apparently legitimate sites to racist sites, and the jamming of mainstream sites with denial messages.
