The first known rules of golf were drawn up in 1744 in Edinburgh for the world's first open golf competition at Leith by the Gentlemen Golfers of Edinburgh, who became The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. In the nineteenth century, the rules evolved as local clubs took the Edinburgh rules and adapted them for their own use. In 1897 the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews assumed oversight of the rules and in the same year published the first national set of rules. This book examines the history of the rules of golf from their first codification to the present day. It looks at the circumstances of the composition of the first rules, their scope, and afterlife.
The Ryder Cup tells the complete story of one of the world's most prestigious sporting contests. Fiercely fought every two years, it uniquely pits teams from two golfing giants - Europe and the USA - against each other in a sport that is more usually associated with individual play. This beautifully illustrated book tells the full story of this great tournament, from its humble beginnings in 1927, to the introduction of European golfers into what had been the GB and Ireland team in the late 1970s, to the titanic, see-saw struggles of the modern day. It looks at each of the Ryder Cups, and features the great players, pairings, captains and courses along the way. A book for sports fans everywhere, The Ryder Cup is the definitive chronicling of the history and prestige of this global sporting event.
"I wish I had this book over thirty years ago--I genuinely believe it would have prolonged my career at the highest level." --Tony Jacklin Imagine being able to achieve the perfect mental state to make your best possible swing over every shot? Being fearless at critical putts and stepping up with an inner calm that allows you to play your best golf, every time you stand over the ball. "Silent Mind Golf" removes the mystery behind the mental mastery that lies at the heart of peak performance. A lifelong golfer and one of the world's leading motivational speakers, Robin Sieger has developed a practical guide to mental conditioning that will enable any golfer, amateur or professional, to get to grips with the dynamics crucial to getting into the zone. Too often golfers concentrate all their efforts on technique, in the belief it is only the mechanics of the game they have to master. Instead, free of jargon, with easy-to-follow examples, personal anecdotes from the world's most successful players, and a CD of mental conditioning exercises specifically tailored to golfers, this unique book will be your guide to developing the single most neglected, least understood, and ultimately decisive area of the game: mental strength.
