The book is dedicated to the application of self-consistent methods
to the solution of static and dynamic problems of the mechanics and
physics of composite materials. The effective elastic, electric,
dielectric, thermo-conductive and other properties of composite
materials reinforced by ellipsoidal, spherical multi-layered
inclusions, thin hard and soft inclusions, short fibers and
unidirected multi-layered fibers are considered. Explicit formulas
and efficient computational algorithms for the calculation of the
effective properties of the composites are presented and analyzed.
The method of the effective medium and the method of the effective
field are developed for the calculation of the phase velocities and
attenuation of the mean (coherent) wave fields propagating in the
composites...

A century ago, horses were ubiquitous in America. They plowed the
fields, transported people and goods within and between cities and
herded livestock. About a million of them were shipped overseas to
serve in World War I. Equine and related industries employed vast
numbers of stable workers, farriers, wainwrights, harness makers
and teamsters. Cities were ringed with fodder-producing farmland,
and five-story stables occupied prime real estate in Manhattan.
Then, in just a few decades, the horses vanished in a wave of
emerging technologies. At the same time, those technologies
fostered unprecedented economic growth, and with it a culture of
recreation and leisure that opened a new place for the horse as an
athletic teammate and social companion.
Composite and heterogeneous materials play an important role in
modern material engineering and technology. This volume is devoted
to the theory of such materials. Static elastic, dielectric,
thermo- and electroconductive properties of composite materials
reinforced with ellipsoidal homogeneous and multi-layered
inclusions, short and long multi-layered fibers, thin hard and soft
inclusions, media with cracks and pores are considered.
Self-consistent methods are used as the main theoretical tool for
the calculation of static and dynamic properties of heterogeneous
materials. This book is the first monograph to develop
self-consistent methods and apply these to the solution of problems
of electromagnetic and elastic wave propagation in matrix
composites and polycrystals. Predictions of the methods are
compared with experimental data and exact solutions. Explicit
equations and efficient numerical algorithms for the calculation of
velocities and attenuation coefficients of the mean (coherent) wave
fields propagating in composites and polycrystals are
presented.
The book helps materials engineers to predict properties of
heterogeneous materials and to create new composite materials which
physical properties are optimal to the exploitation conditions. The
results of the book are useful for scholars who work on the theory
of composite and heterogeneous media.
This unique book is dedicated to the application of
self-consistent methods to the solution of static and dynamic
problems of the mechanics and physics of composite materials. The
effective elastic, electric, dielectric, thermo-conductive and
other properties of composite materials reinforced by ellipsoidal,
spherical multi-layered inclusions, thin hard and soft inclusions,
short fibers and unidirected multi-layered fibers are considered.
The book contains many concrete results.
Although residents and pediatric ophthalmology fellows examine
patients in the clinic, they may not be involved in surgery on the
same patients and even less often get to follow the progress of
these patients postoperatively. The Wills Eye Strabismus Surgery
Handbook is designed to address this challenge in residency and
fellowship education as a manual focused on developing surgical
plans for strabismus patients. Drs. Leonard B. Nelson and Alex V.
Levin and their contributors have organized The Wills Eye
Strabismus Surgery Handbook to allow for the reader to take notes
regarding their own diagnosis and treatment plan for each case that
is presented. This workbook style and its practical, easy-to-read
format make this resource useful for written and oral board
preparation, and as a handy reference guide for use long after
exams are over. Each chapter presents an introduction into the
decision-making process for a specific strabismus condition,
followed by the surgical plans selected by three expert Wills Eye
Strabismus Center strabismologists with regard to their approach to
the presented case. Summary remarks by the chapter editor briefly
review the basic concepts in developing a diagnosis and treatment
plan while bringing together the varied opinions offered by the
strabismologists in order to put them in context. Topics covered
include: Strabismus surgery decision making Esotropia Exotropia
Dissociated vertical deviation Cranial nerve palsies Strabismus
syndromes Strabismus in systemic disease Reoperations Nystagmus
Other complex strabismus cases The Wills Eye Strabismus Surgery
Handbook is an essential resource for residents and pediatric
ophthalmology fellows, as well as other ophthalmologists, looking
to develop their surgical planning skills. It is a helpful field
guide for any ophthalmologists who does strabismus and who is
looking for a handy addition to their reference shelf.
Amongst other things, Barry V Levine is an educator, administrator,
actor and writer. In this book, the reader will enjoy just a small
selection of Barry's work. The pieces included in this compilation
are both thought-provoking and whimsical. It includes poetry,
tributes, Parsha, narratives, retrospectives and more. Each piece
was hand-selected by Barry's son Matthew. This book was put
together as a gift from a son to his father but in actuality, is a
gift to anyone who reads it.
In this engaging and humorous book, eminent social psychologist
Robert Levine explores a dimension of our experience that we take
for granted - our experience of time. Taking us on an enchanting
tour through the ages and around the world, we travel to Brazil,
where to be three hours late is perfectly acceptable, and to Japan,
were he finds a sense of the long-term that is unheard of in the
West, as well as to remote places in the world where long-term that
is unheard of in the West, as well as to remote places in the world
where 'nature time', the rhythms of the sun and the seasons, is the
only time to live by. From the sundials of ancient Greece to the
origins of 'clock time' in the Industrial Revolution, Levine asks,
how do we use our time? Are we ruled by the clock? What does this
do to our cities, our bodies? Perhaps, he argues, time as a human
construct has come to define and constrain cultures, while instead
we ought to function 'multitemporally', each of us charting our own
geography of time.

Specialties! Many serious, potentially blinding eye disorders have
a genetic basis. Currently, there are relatively few ocular
geneticists in the world, yet inherited eye disease is one of the
leading causes of blindness worldwide. Significant strides have
been made in gene identification and acquisition of knowledge on
the underlying mechanisms of hereditary eye disease. The field of
ocular genetics is becoming an increasingly relevant part of
ophthalmologists' purview. This has resulted in a dire need for a
comprehensive textbook ophthalmologists and other professionals who
work with patients with genetic disorders can utilize to gain a
better understanding of inherited eye disorders. The Wills Eye
Handbook of Ocular Genetics, by Alex Levin, Mario Zanolli, and
Jenina Capasso of Wills Eye Hospital, is a practical,
