Sustainable Consumption is unique, not just in its inter-disciplinary and substantive subject matter (changing networks of utility consumption and production), but because it examines empirically the key theoretical debates underpinning the social sciences at the beginning of the 21st century. This book shifts the focus of sustainable consumption away from the individual consumer and their lifestyles, and examines how existing systems of provision constrain how people consume and how sustainability is conceived in popular and policy-related discourses. The authors address a number of relevant and topical issues including: the relationship between production and consumption, with a focus on how each sphere configures the other; the escalation of choice and the emergence of differentiation in service provision and lifestyle orientation; the constraints on consumption that are embedded both in systems of provision and in the collective routines of everyday life; and the differential capacities of states, public agencies, social movements and commercial companies to facilitate sustainable consumption. In tackling these issues, the book advances the sustainable consumption agenda by highlighting the ways in which socio-technical and market regulatory arrangements at the systemic level increase opportunities for the gradual re-orientation of consumption habits across social groups and over time. This book offers a comprehensive evaluation of sustainable consumption in the context of infrastructure provision. The interdisciplinary nature and rigorous analysis will make it essential reading for scholars, students and policymakers interested in sustainability, sociology, culture, consumption patterns and the environment.

This work establishes the significance of the thought of Puritan William Ames (1576-1633) in deepening and systematizing established Reformation teaching on Christian doctrine and life in a way that ensured its subsequent development through the early modern period and beyond. This book argues that William Ames built on existing, but as yet un-developed and un-codified, thought of Reformed and Puritan forerunners to construct an early theological system on the twin pillars of covenant theology and piety. In this exciting new work, van Vliet expounds Ames' covenantal thinking and demonstrates that Ames relocates moral theology from the medieval structures of early, virtue-based, Puritanism, to a Reformed framework anchored in the Decalogue. This is followed by a demonstration of the confluence of Ames' concern for Christian living with similar concerns of seventeenth-century Reformed pastors and thinkers in the Dutch Republic of the early modern period's post-Reformation world (Nadere Reformatie), and his influence on early-American Jonathan Edwards-both directly and through Petrus van Maastricht. In this persuasive argument, van Vliet radically corrects Amesian historiography which has minimized his influence.
Governments all over the world are struggling with the question of how to adapt to climate change. They need information not only about the issue and its possible consequences, but also about feasible governance strategies and instruments to combat it. At the same time, scientists from different social disciplines are trying to understand the dynamics and peculiarities of the governance of climate change adaptation. This book demonstrates how action-oriented research methods can be used to satisfy the need for both policy-relevant information and scientific knowledge. Bringing together eight case studies that show inspiring practices of action research from around the world, including Australia, Denmark, Vietnam and the Netherlands, the book covers a rich variety of action-research applications, running from participatory observation to serious games and role-playing exercises. It explores many adaptation challenges, from flood-risk safety to heat stress and freshwater availability, and draws out valuable lessons about the conditions that make action research successful, demonstrating how scientific and academic knowledge can be used in a practical context to reach useful and applicable insights. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of climate change, environmental policy, politics and governance.
Urban sanitation and solid waste sectors are under significant pressure in East Africa due to the lack of competent institutional capacity and the growth of the region's urban population. This book presents and applies an original analytical approach to assess the existing socio-technical mixtures of waste and sanitation systems and to ensure wider access, increase flexibility and ecological sustainability. It shows how the problem is not the current diversity in waste and sanitation infrastructures and services and variety of types and scales of technology, of formal and informal sector involvement, and of management and ownership modes. The book focuses instead on the lack of an integrative approach to managing and upgrading of the various waste and sanitation configurations and services so as to ensure wider access, flexibility and sustainability for the low income populations who happen to be the main stakeholders. This approach, coined "Modernized Mixtures", serves as a nexus throughout the book. The empirical core addresses the waste and sanitation challenges and debates at each scale - from the micro-level (households) to the macro-level (international support) - and is based on the results of a five-year-long interdisciplinary, empirical research program. It assesses the socio-technical diversity in waste and sanitation and provides viable solutions to sanitation and waste management in East Africa. This book provides students, researchers and professional in environmental technology, sociology, management and urban planning with an integrated analytical perspective on centralized and decentralized waste and sanitation configurations and tools for improvement in the technology, policy and management of sanitation and solid waste sectors.

Published in 1999, Creative Governance sets out to develop new ideas on the development of Fisheries in Europe. The scholarly and political attention for fisheries in general within Europe is predominantly focused on problems of controlling catch. In this book it is not the problems of harvesting which are taken as the starting point, but opportunities in fisheries as a whole: catch, processing, market and consumption of fish and fish products. The discussion is broadened to include the management of fisheries from the perspective of governance rather than management or policy. Governance is a new and important concept currently being developed in several areas of social science, in this book the governance concept is related to the creation of new opportunities of fisheries in Europe. The combination of these two approaches is not only important for fisheries (in Europe) but also to the governance of natural resources more generally where the shift from a problem to an opportunity and from a management or a governance approach might shed new light and stimulate new actions. The book is the product of close cooperation between scholars from biological, geographical, political science, management studies and anthropological backgrounds.
For many years a uniform and uncontested picture of utility system organization has endured across Europe. Provider and consumer roles have been largely taken for granted, and consumers have had little choice but to use the infrastructure of the only network provider available. Yet recent transformations have challenged this model. This book examines the ongoing environmental restructuring of consumption and provision in energy, water and waste systems. In accounting for the distinctive environmental qualities, technical features and institutional dynamics of utility systems this book challenges contemporary conceptualizations of consumers as the autonomous drivers of environmental change. Instead, utilities and users are positioned as the 'co-managers' of utility systems, and processes of environmental innovation are seen to depend on creating contexts for the systemic restructuring of demand.

High Returns from Low Risk provides the proof, model and strategy to reign in your exposure while raking in the profit.
Within the last decade, climate change adaptation has become a main governance strategy for dealing with the problems of global environmental change. The development of scientific knowledge is crucial given the uncertainties and complexity of climate adaption measures, but given the imperative to tackle climate change impacts, this knowledge has to be actionable as well. This book presents a diverse range of case studies in action-research methods used to support the governance of climate adaptation, examining the reasons for using action research in this particular policy domain, its main pitfalls and problems, as well as the advantages and results. The book discusses the question of why action research and the governance of climate adaptation are an obvious combination and presents the main principles and appearances of action research in the field of governance studies and public management. The book offers not only a valuable overview of what action research can contribute to the governance of climate adaptation, but also provides international examples of the application of action research in the domain of climate adaptation, including Germany, Australia, Denmark and the Netherlands. The development of possible adaptation measures and adequate governance arrangements for climate adaptation takes place in the midst of many uncertainties, diverging interests and budget cuts; this book demonstrates how scientific and academic knowledge can be used in a practical context to reach useful and applicable insights. The collection should be of interest to scholars and students of climate change, environmental policy, politics and governance.

The volcanic island of Iceland is a unique geological place due both to its position in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and its repeated glaciations. It has been an accurate recorder of geodynamic and regional climatic evolutions for at least the last 15 million years. This book studies the Quaternary magmatism associated with the deep Iceland hotspot and, in particular, its distinctive geochemical and volcanological characteristics. It also analyzes that Arctic glacierization as it relates to the opening of the North Atlantic and the appearance of today's ocean currents. We will also investigate the Quaternary glaciation as it affected Iceland in its oceanic context, particularly on the basis of radiometric dating, looking at the formation of the Greenland and Scandinavian ice sheets and data from marine sediment. Finally, it explores the specific environmental features of the island, from the end of the last ice age to global warming today. This book brings together the internal and external geodynamics of our planet to understand how Iceland functions and its role as a recorder of the paleoclimatic evolution of the Northern Hemisphere.
This volume is the result of years of commitment with world-wide sanitation challenges from various research networks linking the editors and authors of this volume to many other sanitation scholars and professionals. Major contributions to this volume are derived from the work done in the PROVIDE project (working on sustainable urban infrastructures in cities of the Lake Victoria Basin, East Africa), the DESAR project (research and pilot projects in Decentralized Sanitation and Reuse, the Netherlands), and among others within NETSSAF (large scale implementation of sanitation in Africa), and EcoSan networks. The major milestone for this book to emerge was however the IWA Sanitation Challenge Conference of May 2008 in Wageningen, the Netherlands where all the authors of this book presented their papers. The conference was organized by a consortium of sanitation specialists at Wageningen University's Environmental Policy Group (the editors) and the s- department of Environmental Technology, LeAF (Lettinga Associates Foundation) and Wetsus (Center of Excellence for Sustainable Water Technology in the Netherlands). It was a unique event as it enabled a truly multi-disciplinary approach in discussing Sanitation Challenges in North and South with social and political scientists, natural scientists, environmental engineers and practitioners in one s- entific conference. This volume presents a selection of the social scientific insights and research results presented at the Sanitation Challenge Conference: the concepts, decisi- making support tools and the perspectives from farmers and consumers towards sanitation innovation.
The mechanical properties of food play an important role during manufacturing, storage, handling, and last but not least, during consumption. For an adequate understanding of the mechanical properties of liquid, liquid-like, soft solid, and solid foods, a basic understanding of relevant aspects of rheology and fracture mechanics is essential. Focusing on basic principles, Rheology and Fracture Mechanics of Foods examines how rheological and fracture behavior in food relates to product structure. Divided into three parts, the book reviews basic concepts and emphasizes aspects relevant for studying food products, raw materials, and intermediate products. It then introduces measuring methods and the equipment used for studying mechanical properties of food products, highlighting tests that deliver reproducible and interpretable data. The final part investigates the relation between rheological and fracture behavior of matter and physical structure at the relevant molecular, mesoscopic, and macroscopic length scales. In addition to the basics of rheology and fracture mechanics, the book explores the relationship between measured mechanical properties and the structure of the different types of food and how they may determine texture perception. Containing practical examples of the relationship between food structure, mechanical properties, and sensory characteristics, this book provides an overview of these points for food science and food engineering students at the BSc / MSc level and people working in food research and development.
'A fresh author / illustrator pairing here from Cicada Books. This is a great story, perfectly concluded by Bartholomew's Dad calmly helping him to get properly ready for school.' -- It's All About Stories 'With pants and loo roll all over the endpapers, this book is bound to be a winner - and it's possibly the perfect story for parents with children who just cannot get up in time for school.' -- School Reading List Bartholomew struggles to get himself ready as the monsters from last night's dreams sabotage the most simple of morning routines. A vast purple monster sits on his chest, making it hard to get up. A slug monster slimes his clothes, so he can't get dressed. Brushing teeth, eating breakfast, and even going to the toilet all present challenges as the monsters mess around at Bartholomew's expense. Will Bartholomew's dad ever manage to get him out the door? Hilarious illustrations bring Bartolomew's frustration and befuddlement alive in this deceptively simple story that anyone who is not a morning person is bound to relate to.
Over the next few years, the proprietary trading and hedge fund
industries will migrate largely to automated trade selection and
execution systems. Indeed, this is already happening. While several
finance books provide C++ code for pricing derivatives and
performing numerical calculations, none approaches the topic from a
system design perspective. This book will be divided into two
sections-programming techniques and automated trading system ( ATS
) technology-and teach financial system design and development from
the absolute ground up using Microsoft Visual C++.NET 2005. MS
Visual C++.NET 2005 has been chosen as the implementation language
primarily because most trading firms and large banks have developed
and continue to develop their proprietary algorithms in ISO C++ and
Visual C++.NET provides the greatest flexibility for incorporating
these legacy algorithms into working systems. Furthermore, the .NET
Framework and development environment provide the best libraries
and tools for rapid development of trading systems.

The financial markets industry is at the same crossroads as the
automotive industry in the late 1970s. Margins are collapsing and
customization is rapidly increasing. The automotive industry turned
to quality and its no coincidence that in the money management
industry many of the spectacular failures have been due largely to
problems in quality control. The financial industry in on the verge
of a quality revolution. |
