Law and Authority under the Guise of the Good (Hardcover): Veronica Rodriguez-Blanco Law and Authority under the Guise of the Good (Hardcover)
Veronica Rodriguez-Blanco
R2,865 Discovery Miles 28 650 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The received view on the nature of legal authority contains the idea that a sound account of legitimate authority will explain how a legal authority has a right to command and the addressee a duty to obey. The received view fails to explain, however, how legal authority truly operates upon human beings as rational creatures with specific psychological makeups. This book takes a bottom-up approach, beginning at the microscopic level of agency and practical reason and leading to the justificatory framework of authority. The book argues that an understanding of the nature of legal normativity involves an understanding of the nature and structure of practical reason in the context of the law, and advances the idea that legal authority and normativity are intertwined. This point can be summarised thus: if we are able to understand both how the agent exercises his or her practical reason under legal directives and commands and how the agent engages his or her practical reason by following legal rules grounded on reasons for actions as good-making characteristics, then we can fully grasp the nature of legal authority and legal normativity. Using the philosophies of action enshrined in the works of Elisabeth Anscombe, Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas, the study explains practical reason as diachronic future-directed intention in action and argues that this conception illuminates the structure of practical reason of the legal rules' addressees. The account is comprehensive and enables us to distinguish authoritative and normative legal rules in just and good legal systems from 'apparent' authoritative and normative legal rules of evil legal systems. At the heart of the book is the methodological view of a 'practical turn' to elucidate the nature of legal normativity and authority.

David Greig's Holed Theatre - Globalization, Ethics and the Spectator (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Veronica Rodriguez David Greig's Holed Theatre - Globalization, Ethics and the Spectator (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Veronica Rodriguez
R2,273 Discovery Miles 22 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With a Foreword by Dan Rebellato, this book offers up a detailed exploration of Scottish playwright David Greig's work with particular attention to globalization, ethics, and the spectator. It makes the argument that Greig's theatre works by undoing, cracking, or breaking apart myriad elements to reveal the holed, porous nature of all things. Starting with a discussion of Greig's engagement with shamanism and arguing for holed theatre as a response to globalization, for Greig's works' politics of aesthethics, and for the holed spectator as part of an affective ecology of transfers, this book discusses some of Greig's most representative political theatre from Europe (1994) to The Events (2013), concluding with an exploration of Greig's theatre's world-forming quality.

Advances in Seed Science and Technology for More Sustainable Crop Production (Hardcover): Julia Buitink, Olivier Leprince Advances in Seed Science and Technology for More Sustainable Crop Production (Hardcover)
Julia Buitink, Olivier Leprince; Contributions by Henk W.M. Hilhorst, Roberto Benech-Arnold, M. Veronica Rodriguez, …
R4,713 Discovery Miles 47 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With the continued effects of climate change threatening the security of the global food system, there is a greater emphasis on ensuring successful crop establishment as a means of optimising agricultural production. Advances in seed science and technology for more sustainable crop production considers how an improved understanding of seed quality, germination and seedling emergence can address this challenge. The book reviews the development of new techniques to ensure seed quality control, including seed phenotyping, as well as the role of genetic and environmental factors in determining seed longevity. In its comprehensive exploration of seed science and technology, the book highlights how an informed understanding of seed biology can contribute to mitigating the effects of climate change on seed quality and consequently crop production.
