A classic account of the war in Afghanistan
This is a well known and highly regarded book concerning the First Afghan War, it was written by a senior British soldier who experienced the conflict at first hand and wrote a substantial part of his narratives whilst actually imprisoned by the Afghans. Eyre and his family were captured by Akbar Khan and held for nine months until rescued by General Pollock's forces. Some of the manuscript was smuggled out of his cell while he remained a captive and on its arrival in England it was published. At the time, Eyre's account and that recounting similar experiences by Lady Florentia Sale (also available as a Leonaur edition) were considered companion pieces that would enable the British public to understand the Afghan debacle, the disaster that had there befallen the army under Elphinstone and the resulting annihilation of the army in the Afghan passes as it struggled to retreat into India. This book necessarily relates the First Afghan War in all its appalling detail and it therefore has few equals, as a consequence it is a source work of the most important and invaluable kind that is essential reading for all those interested in the subject as well as a vital addition to any library on the history of the British in Afghanistan.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

The destruction of the British army while retreating from Afghanistan in 1842 is one of the most dramatic episodes in British imperial history. Lieutenant Vincent Eyre was present, and kept a diary throughout. This book, first published in 1843 and reissued in 1976, is Eyre's account of the events leading up to the retreat, the disastrous withdrawal itself, and his time spent in captivity.

Vincent Eyre (1811 81) was an English officer in the East India Company from 1827 and took part in the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839 42), which ended in disaster for the British. He would later become a major-general and a Knight Commander of the Star of India, but in this work Eyre lucidly describes his experiences as a lieutenant in the war, during which he was severely wounded. In addition to providing a wealth of military detail, he also includes an account of how he was captured with his family by Akbar Khan in January 1842 and held hostage for nearly nine months. Eyre kept a diary throughout, and the manuscript was smuggled to a friend in India prior to publication in England in 1843. This updated third edition offers insights into both military and personal misfortune.
