In this day and age, it is unfortunate that the economic prosperity
and development leads to disruption of the dynamic balance of the
environment. The philosophy of sustainable development has been
presented for a long period of time but it has not been able to
bring about a substantial change in our society. The transformation
of this philosophy into a practical reality seems to be far away -
at least in the foreseeable future. In my opinion, the only way I
see the revolution taking place is for us to incorporate
'sustainability' in our daily living and to keep pushing for a
sustainable society. Meanwhile, we also need scientists to work on
technologies that would lead us to that goal at a faster pace.
Technologies that are 'completely' environmentally friendly are
needed urgently. And if such technologies or ideas of one exists, a
platform is required that showcases such ideas to the scientific
and non-scientific audience. Through this book, I am happy to
present the thoughts of seven different research groups whose work
may lead us to the doorsteps of sustainable society. As scientists,
most of us specialize in a sub-topic that may be related to one of
the three environmental components - air, land, or water. Over a
period of time, we become so engrossed with the sub-discipline of
our specialization that we only have glimpses of what is happening
in other disciplines.
Within the span of last couple of years, the increasing human
interference with v- ious natural ecosystems and higher discharge
of pollutants has presented numerous challenges to the society
related to preserving the nature for a better tomorrow. The
challenges also mount pressure on the scienti?c community to invent
technologies that would provide solutions to the problems that are
man made and also decrease the negative consequences that we are
facing because of our own actions. This edited book attempts to
present eight technological innovations that have shown potential
to provide answers to a few challenges. Like the previous
collection, the described innovations in the current volume also
cover a range of areas including water and soil pollution,
bio-sensors and energy. However, it is to be realized that no
combination of technology can be enough to make a sizeable
difference. As I said in my last collection, technological advances
have to be integrated with a change in social behavior. The
philosophy of sustainable development has to be the principle of
future planning and growth. In this collection, I am pleased to
include an article on noise pollution. Noise is a pollutant of our
own behavior and can only be solved by a behavioral change. The
change that is either voluntary or enforced by laws. As an
environmental scientist noise is not normally a pollutant that
would come in mind as a leading pollutant.

This research focus on the significance of customer retention and
satisfaction in Indian banking sector. Using different banks such
as nationalized or non-nationalized along with a customer based
survey and managers interviews were undertaken to support the
study. The reason for choosing Indian Banks is due to the most
competitive and fast growing sector in India. This sector is facing
rapid changes as a result of the economic reform brought about by
the Government of India a decade ago. Now days banks focuses to
compete and survive in this competition which needs a good
foundation of customers who are loyal to their banks. The research
aims to explore different types of steps undertaken by various
banks to hold their customer and grow their market share,
especially during and after recession. In mature markets expansion
becomes limited; in this case customer retention models can rescue
the business. It is a proven fact that investment in retention is
highly profitable. Higher and consistent customer retention
strategy leads to higher the profitability of the firm. The
recommendation and limitation provided may be valid for India only.
