As a result of the 1763 Treaty of Paris, Spain relinquished Florida, a land it had possessed for over 200 years, to the British. With revolution imminent, Britain set about populating its two new colonies of East and West Florida with loyal British Tories, ultimately turning St. Augustine into a southern American headquarters for British interests. This volume details the British occupation of colonial Florida immediately before and during the American Revolution with emphasis on the effect this possession had on the course of the war. Beginning with a brief summary of Spanish history, it takes a look at the relative colonial positions of Spain and Britain with regard to the Americas during the pre-revolutionary period. The Georgia-Florida border dispute, the invasion of East Florida and the eventual return of the Spaniards are also discussed. Finally, an appendix details St. Augustine buildings from the revolutionary period which are still standing today.
Lloyd Tilghman was a man of distinguished family. His forefathers, men of rank during colonial times, included Matthew Tilghman, who helped frame Maryland's constitution, Chief Justice William Tilghman of Pennsylvania and Lieutenant Colonel Tench C. Tilghman, George Washington's military secretary. Trained at West Point, Lloyd Tilghman originally resigned his commission in 1836 over to moral concerns regarding the Indian war in Florida. However, with the onset of the Mexican conflict - a veritable training ground for the War Between the States - in 1846, Tilghman rejoined the army as an aide-de-camp to General David E. Twiggs. When the ultimate question was posed almost two decades later, Tilghman, a Southern sympathizer with decidedly Northern ties, once again followed his moral dictates and joined the Confederate cause. Relying heavily on contemporary sources such as newspapers and periodicals, this biography chronicles the life of Brigadier General Lloyd Tilghman, a gallant Confederate commander and staunch defender of states' rights. While covering Tilghman's entire career, including his service during the Mexican War and his contributions to the construction of the Panama railroad, the work concentrates primarily on his Civil War years and 1863 death. The book details the military movements in which he was involved with the stated goal of informing the reader about the battles that took place between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River and the extraordinary generals who fought them. Extensive maps, illustrations and contemporary photographs are included. The work is also indexed.
J. Patton Anderson was from Florida, the seceding state that was referred to as the tadpole of the Confederate states, but nevertheless was one of the Confederacys great military leaders. Anderson oversaw a large plantation, Casa Bianca, and his views meshed with secessionist views sufficiently for him to be elected as a delegate to the Secession Conference held in Montgomery, Alabama. After Florida seceded, President Davis appointed Anderson as a Brigadier General. Anderson engaged the enemy in the Western theater for four years under his mentor, General Braxton Bragg, who advanced him to Major General in command of the District of Florida. This is a complete biography of Andersons life, including his service in the Mexican War, his appointment as United States Marshal to the distant Washington Territory, his adventure (with his wife, Etta Adair) of taking the 1853 Washington Territory census by canoe, his election as territorial delegate to Washington City, and his entire Civil War service. J. Patton and Etta Andersons affectionate correspondence is an important aspect of this biography, revealing what it was like to be alive at this time and what it took to keep their family intact.
This is an "old-fashioned" book in the best sense of the term: It is written by one man, and it is scholarly, complete, thorough, and thoughtful. It is, in fact, a magnum opus wherein every aspect is not only touched, but handled to perfec- tion. This is a treatise that deserves careful reading by that increasing cadre of medical specialists who understand the many ways in which mycoses threaten human health and happiness, viz, the veterinarian, pharmaceutical chemist, general practitioner, pharmacologist, and entire consortium of researchers who study the biology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, and treatment of fungus infec- tions. Mycoses encompass a vast spectrum of diseases from trivial superficial skin infections (tinea versicolor), troublesome ringworm infections (the tineas of skin, hair, and nails), yeast infections (candidosis), the systemic mycosis (cryptococcosis, histoplasmosis), and even the deep-seated infections due to molds and saprophytic fungi (aspergillosis). It is precisely because of the great variety of causative organisms that the imidazoles deserve a special treatise. They provide the first class of drugs with therapeutic activity against all the important fungi which infect humans and animals. Accordingly, their medical significance is great and the possibilities endless. Morever, the imidazoles are the first effective drugs whose antimicro- bial activities extend beyond the usual designation of "broad-spectrum. " Broad-spectrum antibiotics, for example, are either antifungal or antibacterial, not both as the imidazoles are. To be sure, there have been other chemothera- peutic compounds which inhibit bacteria and fungi.
