theories of causal inference and belief in substance and his
analysis of the understanding.

First published in 1938, An Essay on Critical Appreciation aims to
provide a language suited for the explication on beauty. This
explication is not based merely on emotion but is motivated by
contemplation and discrimination. By virtue of being rendered in a
discourse, an appreciation can claim to be critical or
discriminating and 'beauty' can be said to have characteristics.
The search of such a language takes the author through the
contemplation on the meaning of 'beauty', entertaining contrary
views, and reaching at an understanding of the aesthetic situation.
This book will be of interest to students of English literature,
philosophy and art.
First published in 1931, A Study in the Philosophy of Malebranche
examines the theories which constitute the philosophical system of
Malebranche. From the entire gamut of Malebranche's works, Church
specifically culls out and analyses theories pertaining to
Malebranche's vision in god; knowledge; occasionalism; and
imagination and sense. These theories are embedded within
Malebranche's lifelong engagement with the works of Descartes and
to some extent, St. Augustine. A philosopher often overlooked, A
Study in the Philosophy of Malebranche has enduring relevance for
students of philosophy and theology.
First published in 1942, Bradley's Dialectic is a competent survey
of Bradley's leading philosophical principles, together with its
difficulties. The primary objective is to bring out in somewhat
simple terms the essential character of Bradley's dialectic. Here
'dialectic' means a method of elucidation. Professor Church's
appraisal of the pertinence of Bradley's dialectic is heightened by
his critical discussion of several less elucidated metaphysical
features. In this connection, he submits a penetrating criticism of
misrepresentations of Bradley's views, especially in the important
subject of Relations and its place in the structure and development
of Thought. Although brief, Professor Church's analysis is a vital
study of crucial themes in philosophy, which will appeal to
students of Philosophy and Metaphysics.
First published in 1952, An Analysis of Resemblance has two-fold
aims. The opening chapters seek to present what it is not about. It
is not concerned with any sense of resemblance in which that term
is used by thinkers generally and widely called Hegelian Idealists.
The several subsequent chapters of the work advance an analysis of
four senses of resemblance. Two of these four senses would seem to
be radical - in the etymological sense of the term. The other two
senses are derivative. The concluding chapter advances some
considerations as to the bearing of an analysis of resemblance on
the matters of universals and taxonomy. Professor Church's clearly
stated ideas will arouse much discussion among students of
philosophy. This book helps to round off his studies in this field
and is a worthy successor to his earlier works.
"The federal Superfund program for cleaning up America's inactive
toxic waste sites is noteworthy not only for its enormous cost -
$15.2 billion has been authorized thus far - but also for its
unique design. The legislation that created Superfund provided the
Environmental Protection Agency with a diverse set of policy tools.
Preeminent among them is a civil liability scheme that imposes
responsibility for multimillion dollar cleanups on businesses and
government units linked - even tangentially - to hazardous waste
sites. Armed with this potent policy implement, the agency can
order the parties who are legally responsible for the toxic
substances at a site to clean it up, with large fines and damages
for failure to comply. EPA can also offer conciliatory measures to
bring about voluntary, privately financed cleanup; or it can launch
a cleanup initially paid for by Superfund and later force the
responsible parties to reimburse the government. In this book,
Thomas W. Church and Robert T. Nakamura provide the first in-depth
study of Superfund operations at hazardous waste sites. They
examine six Superfund cleanups, including three regions and both
'hard' and 'easy' sites, to ask 'what works?' Based on detailed
case studies, the book describes various strategies that have been
applied by government regulators and lawyers and the responses to
those different strategies by businesses and local government
officials. The authors characterize the implementation strategies
used by the EPA as prosecution, accommodation, and public works.
They point out that the choice of strategy involves setting
priorities among Superfund's competing objectives. They conclude
that the best implementation strategy is one that considers the
context of each site and the particular priorities in each case.
Looking toward the reauthorization of Superfund, they also offer
recommendations for improvements in the organization of the program
and discuss proposals for change in its liability scheme. "
ABOUT THIS BOOK This book is intended for researchers who want to
keep abreast of cur rent developments in corpus-based natural
language processing. It is not meant as an introduction to this
field; for readers who need one, several entry-level texts are
available, including those of (Church and Mercer, 1993; Charniak,
1993; Jelinek, 1997). This book captures the essence of a series of
highly successful work shops held in the last few years. The
response in 1993 to the initial Workshop on Very Large Corpora
(Columbus, Ohio) was so enthusias tic that we were encouraged to
make it an annual event. The following year, we staged the Second
Workshop on Very Large Corpora in Ky oto. As a way of managing
these annual workshops, we then decided to register a special
interest group called SIGDAT with the Association for Computational
Linguistics. The demand for international forums on corpus-based
NLP has been expanding so rapidly that in 1995 SIGDAT was led to
organize not only the Third Workshop on Very Large Corpora
(Cambridge, Mass. ) but also a complementary workshop entitled From
Texts to Tags (Dublin). Obviously, the success of these workshops
was in some measure a re flection of the growing popularity of
corpus-based methods in the NLP community. But first and foremost,
it was due to the fact that the work shops attracted so many
high-quality papers."
