Foreword by Philippa Perry
‘Based on groundbreaking research that has the power to change the
lives of countless children - and the adults who love them.’ – Susan

A necessary and important book.' - Philippa Perry, Sunday Times
bestselling author of The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read
Are you a hardy and resilient dandelion, or are you a more sensitive
and fragile orchid?
Building on the definitions of introvert, extrovert or highly
sensitive, The Orchid and the Dandelion exposes – for the first time –
how a combination of environmental and genetic factors contribute to
what makes us who we are. This breakthrough research explains why some
people struggle where others succeed, why happiness comes so easily to
some while frustrations weigh more heavily on others.
In The Orchid and the Dandelion, Dr W. Thomas Boyce – one of the
world’s foremost researchers in the field of pediatric health –
presents findings that children have two very different responses to
their environments. While some children are like dandelions and can
thrive in almost any environment, there are others who, like orchids,
are much more reactive and susceptible to their surroundings. Now we
finally have a scientific framework to understand people and how to
address their unique needs to help them find their fullest potential.
This groundbreaking book draws on extensive research into genetics and
the exploding field of epigenetics, examples and real stories that will
re-frame how we think about orchid and dandelion children – and the
adults those children have become. By understanding which of us are,
genetically and environmentally speaking, the orchids of this world, Dr
Boyce explains how to care for and parent our children – the true
orchids. He shows how we can help them thrive by sharing insights and
lessons from his thirty years of research in the field.
Land Use Law in Florida presents an in-depth analysis of land use
law common to many states across the United States, using Florida
cases and statutes as examples. Florida case law is an important
course of study for planners, as the state has its own legal
framework that governs how people may use land, with regulation
that has evolved to include state-directed urban and regional
planning. The book addresses issues in a case format, including
planning, land development regulation, property rights, real estate
development and land use, transportation, and environmental
regulation. Each chapter summarizes the rules that a reader should
draw from the cases, making it useful as a reference for practicing
professionals and as a teaching tool for planning students who do
not have experience in reading law. This text is invaluable for
attorneys; professional planners; environmental, property rights,
and neighborhood activists; and local government employees who need
to understand the rules that govern how property owners may use
land in Florida and around the country.

This collection explores how film and television depict the complex
and diverse milieu of the eighteenth century as a literary,
historical, and cultural space. Topics range from adaptations of
Austen's Sense and Sensibility and Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (The
Martian) to historical fiction on the subjects of slavery (Belle),
piracy (Crossbones and Black Sails), monarchy (The Madness of King
George and The Libertine), print culture (Blackadder and National
Treasure), and the role of women (Marie Antoinette, The Duchess,
and Outlander). This interdisciplinary collection draws from film
theory and literary theory to discuss how film and television
allows for critical re-visioning as well as revising of the
cultural concepts in literary and extra-literary writing about the
historical period.

What is the significance of entrepreneurship in an economy?
Scholars have argued that when the market is viewed as a process of
perpetual adjustment to various forces, and not as a set of
end-state prices and quantities simply arrived at, the role of the
entrepreneur comes to the fore. What then are fruitful ways to
conceive of the phenomenon of entrepreneurship? How do
entrepreneurs both respond to and shape larger forces in the
economy? In what ways can political institutions and government
regulation shape the decisions made by entrepreneurs, and their
responsiveness to consumers? How does the cultural environment
influence the types of opportunities that an entrepreneur will
notice and act on? Finally, is entrepreneurial behavior strictly
limited to activity we see in the market? This edited
volume-comprised of chapters by scholars and students studying from
the disciplines of sociology and economics-examines
entrepreneurship theoretically and applied to various cases. It
provides an overview of the economic literature on entrepreneurship
and puts forth a framework for understanding the market process, as
well the policy implications of government intervention and
cultural considerations in the market. It will be of use to any
scholars, students, practitioners or policymakers interested in
entrepreneurship.
This volume is intended to serve as a review of the "next
generation" of political economy scholars in what can be called the
"Wagnerian" tradition, which traces its roots to Buchanan and De
Viti De Marco in the 1930s, who argued that any decision that
results from a political entity must be the product of individual
decision makers operating within some framework of formal and
informal rules. To treat these decisions as if they were the
product of one single mind, or even simply the additive result of
several decisions, is to fundamentally misunderstand and
mischaracterize the dynamics of collective action. Today, Richard
Wagner is among the most prominent theorists in analyzing the
institutional foundations of the economy and the organization of
political decision-making. In this collection of original essays,
former students schooled in this tradition offer emerging insights
on public choice theory, public finance, and political economy,
across a range of topics from voting behavior to entrepreneurship.
The Physics of Everyday Phenomena introduces students to the basic
concepts of physics, using examples of common occurrences in
everyday life. Intended for use in a one-semester or two-semester
course in conceptual physics, this book is written in a narrative
style, frequently using questions designed to draw the reader into
a dialogue about the ideas of physics. This inclusive style allows
the book to be used by anyone interested in exploring the nature of
physics and explanations of everyday physical phenomena.

The Fullerton Longitudinal Study, launched in 1979, chronicled the
development of over 100 children and their families from the
children's first birthday through their high school completion
using a cross-informant/cross-context methodology. In this volume,
the developmental course and sequelae of children's temperament
from age 1.5 years through high school completion are documented.

Biomaterials science has advanced dramatically in the past 50
years with the increased cooperation between engineers chemists and
biologists. Whilst previously biomaterials may have been
erroneously thought to encompass dressing materials or implant
structures designed to replace damaged or diseased tissue, the
range of clinical applications of these materials is immense. Truly
"Smart" biomaterials, which have the ability to recognise, respond
to and even record their environment, now exist. The presentations
in this volume reflect the true inter-disciplinary nature of
biomaterials science; with contributions from polymer chemists,
engineers, biologists and clinicians. The presentations show the
potential of these collaborations and describe how advanced
biomaterials have and are being employed not only in theraputic
applications, but also increasingly in diagnosis and treatment in
medical science.

This book shines much-needed light on the history, structures and
films of the Amharic film industry in Ethiopia. Focusing on the
rise of the industry from 2002, until today, and embedded in
archival, ethnographic and textual research methods, this book
offers a sustained and detailed appreciation of Amharic-language
cinema. Michael Thomas considers 'fiker'/love as an organising
principle in national Ethiopian culture and, by extension, Amharic
cinema. Placing 'fiker' as central to understanding Amharic film
genres also illuminates the continuous negotiations at play between
romantic, familial, patriotic and spiritual notions of love in
these films. Thomas considers the production and exhibition of
films in Ethiopia, charting fluctuations and continuities between
the past and the present. Having done so, he offers detailed
textual readings of films, identifying important junctures in the
industry's development and the emergence of new genres. The
findings of the book detail the affective characteristics that
delineate most Amharic genres and the role culturally specific
concepts, such as fiker, play in maintaining the relevance of
commercial cinemas reliant on domestic audiences.

Collaboration has become a popular approach to environmental
policy, planning, and management. At the urging of citizens,
nongovernmental organizations, and industry, government officials
at all levels have experimented with collaboration. Yet questions
remain about the roles that governments play in
collaboration--whether they are constructive and support
collaboration, or introduce barriers. This thoughtful book analyzes
a series of cases to understand how collaborative processes work
and whether government can be an equal partner even as government
agencies often formally control decision making and are held
accountable for the outcomes. Looking at examples where government
has led, encouraged, or followed in collaboration, the authors
assess how governmental actors and institutions affected the way
issues were defined, the resources available for collaboration, and
the organizational processes and structures that were established.
Cases include collaborative efforts to manage watersheds, rivers,
estuaries, farmland, endangered species habitats, and forests. The
authors develop a new theoretical framework and demonstrate that
government left a heavy imprint in each of the efforts. The work
concludes by discussing the choices and challenges faced by
governmental institutions and actors as they try to realize the
potential of collaborative environmental management.
