Handbook of International Trade and Transportation (Hardcover): Bruce A. Blonigen, Wesley W. Wilson Handbook of International Trade and Transportation (Hardcover)
Bruce A. Blonigen, Wesley W. Wilson
R8,096 Discovery Miles 80 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

International trade has grown rapidly over the past half century, accommodated by the transportation industry through concomitant growth and technological change. But while the connection between transport and trade flows is clear, the academic literature often looks at these two issues separately. This Handbook is unique in pulling together the key insights of each field while highlighting what we know about their intersection and ideas for future research in this relatively unexamined but growing area of study. After presenting the latest data and modeling techniques used to explain global trade patterns, the chapters address directly the core theme of the Handbook: the intersection of international trade and transportation costs. Other key topics examined include trade facilitation, trade networks, and the role of transport costs in offshoring, foreign investment location, and the role of intermediary firms. The Handbook is an excellent primer on the essential concepts and references in international trade and transport for scholars who may have their primary expertise in one of these areas, but are not as familiar with the other. It will also be an invaluable resource for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and other researchers who are relatively new to either field. Contributors include: L. Alfaro, S.L. Baier, K. Behrens, B.A. Blonigen, B.S. Blum, W.M. Brown, J. Carballo, Y.-T. Chang, M.X. Chen, S. Claro, J.J. Corbett, J. Damnjanovic, P. de Langen, F.J. Diez, P.H. Egger, L. Fan, H. Goerg, A. Multiple Stresses in Ecosystems (Paperback): Donald G. Crosby, Jr Cech, Barry W. Wilson Multiple Stresses in Ecosystems (Paperback)
Donald G. Crosby, Jr Cech, Barry W. Wilson
R1,857 Discovery Miles 18 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ecotoxicology is the evaluation of toxic effects within the environment, typically within one specific ecosystem, like a forest, stream, or lake. For years now, ecotoxicological studies have tended to focus on one toxicant at a time. But that isn't how an ecosystem encounters toxicants (or stresses): there may be several elements at work in the air, several more in the water, and still more already within the soil of any given ecosystem, and all have some level of toxic influence on that ecosystem. Multiple Stresses in Ecosystems presents the state-of-the-art in determining the effects of these multiple impacts upon ecosystems. Resulting from a vanguard conference originally held in 1993 at UC Davis, this new work is divided into three sections that present methodolgies for assessing the health of an ecosystem; the effects of multiple toxicological impacts upon an ecosystem, and which tools are worth using to assess these dangers. Environmental scientists, chemists, toxicologists, risk analysts, and probably the entire membership of SETAC will find need for this book, as will wetlands scientists, ecologists, and research biologists.

Jurgen Habermas and the European Economic Crisis - Cosmopolitanism Reconsidered (Hardcover): Gaspare M. Genna, Thomas O... Jurgen Habermas and the European Economic Crisis - Cosmopolitanism Reconsidered (Hardcover)
Gaspare M. Genna, Thomas O Haakenson, Ian W. Wilson
R4,444 Discovery Miles 44 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The European Union entered into an economic crisis in late 2009 that was sparked by bank bailouts and led to large, unsustainable, sovereign debt. The crisis was European in scale, but hit some countries in the Eurozone harder than others. Despite the plethora of writings devoted to the economic crisis in Europe, present understandings of how the political decisions would influence the integration project continue to remain vague. What does it actually mean to be European? Is Europe still a collection of peoples that rallied together during good times and then retreat to nationalism when challenges appear? Or has Europe adopted a common identity that would foster solidarity during hard times? This book provides its reader with a fresh perspective on the importance identity has on the functioning of the European Union as exemplified in Jurgen Habermas' seminal text, 'The Crisis of the European Union: A Response'. Rather than exploring the causes of the crisis, the contributors examine the current state of European identity to determine the likelihood of implementing Habermas' suggestions. The contributor's interdisciplinary approach is organized into four parts and examines the following key areas of concern: Habermas' arguments, placing them into their historical context. To which degree do Europeans share the ideals Habermas describes as crucial to his program of reform. Influence of Habermas' cosmopolitanism through religious and literary lenses. Impact of Habermas' notions in the arenas of education, national economies, austerity, and human rights. Jurgen Habermas and the European Economic Crisis will be read by scholars in the fields of Political Theory and Philosophy, European Politics and Cultural Studies.

The 5th International Workshop on Learning Classi?er Systems (IWLCS2002) was held September 7-8, 2002, in Granada, Spain, during the 7th International Conference on Parallel Problem Solving from Nature (PPSN VII). We have included in this volume revised and extended versions of the papers presented at the workshop. In the ?rst paper, Browne introduces a new model of learning classi?er system, iLCS, and tests it on the Wisconsin Breast Cancer classi?cation problem. Dixon et al. present an algorithm for reducing the solutions evolved by the classi?er system XCS, so as to produce a small set of readily understandable rules. Enee and Barbaroux take a close look at Pittsburgh-style classi?er systems, focusing on the multi-agent problem known as El-farol. Holmes and Bilker investigate the effect that various types of missing data have on the classi?cation performance of learning classi?er systems. The two papers by Kovacs deal with an important theoretical issue in learning classi?er systems: the use of accuracy-based ?tness as opposed to the more traditional strength-based ?tness. In the ?rst paper, Kovacs introduces a strength-based version of XCS, called SB-XCS. The original XCS and the new SB-XCS are compared in the second paper, where - vacs discusses the different classes of solutions that XCS and SB-XCS tend to evolve.

Learning classi er systems are rule-based systems that exploit evolutionary c- putation and reinforcement learning to solve di cult problems. They were - troduced in 1978 by John H. Holland, the father of genetic algorithms, and since then they have been applied to domains as diverse as autonomous robotics, trading agents, and data mining. At the Second International Workshop on Learning Classi er Systems (IWLCS 99), held July 13, 1999, in Orlando, Florida, active researchers reported on the then current state of learning classi er system research and highlighted some of the most promising research directions. The most interesting contri- tions to the meeting are included in the book Learning Classi er Systems: From Foundations to Applications, published as LNAI 1813 by Springer-Verlag. The following year, the Third International Workshop on Learning Classi er Systems (IWLCS 2000), held September 15{16 in Paris, gave participants the opportunity to discuss further advances in learning classi er systems. We have included in this volume revised and extended versions of thirteen of the papers presented at the workshop.

Learning Classifier Systems (LCS) are a machine learning paradigm introduced by John Holland in 1976. They are rule-based systems in which learning is viewed as a process of ongoing adaptation to a partially unknown environment through genetic algorithms and temporal difference learning. This book provides a unique survey of the current state of the art of LCS and highlights some of the most promising research directions. The first part presents various views of leading people on what learning classifier systems are. The second part is devoted to advanced topics of current interest, including alternative representations, methods for evaluating rule utility, and extensions to existing classifier system models. The final part is dedicated to promising applications in areas like data mining, medical data analysis, economic trading agents, aircraft maneuvering, and autonomous robotics. An appendix comprising 467 entries provides a comprehensive LCS bibliography.
