Timothy Wahl grew up on a dairy farm in the town of Andover, New
York. A restless youth who hangs out with other farm boys dreams
big and is bound and determined to make his mark on the world.
But reality is a wet blanket. He not only feels out of place but
IS out of place. He scores mediocre grades, plays sports clumsily,
and contemplates without much success a future of fanfare and
celebration.
One of the few places where he feels like he belongs is in Mr.
MacCrae's art class, which also serves as a dumping ground for
miscreants and the troubled. No one knows just how troubled Timothy
is until the summer of his senior year.
If Timothy has any chance of overcoming his troubles and finding
his place in the world, he'll have to find answers in uncommon
places, and most importantly grow up. His life depends on it.
Join Timothy as he finds adventure in a world where girls love
The Beatles, neighbors still know each other, and where roots run
deep. The good life may be just around the bend, but for now, it's
Hard Times in the Country.

The Swedish Network for European Legal Studies is happy to announce
the launch of a new annual publication, which will act as a forum
for the publication of studies on European law by Swedish scholars,
entitled Swedish Studies in European Law. This will be a hardback
of about 300 pages annually, containing peer-reviewed articles
aimed at spreading Swedish legal research on European law to a wide
international audience. The editors of the yearbook are Professor
Nils Wahl, chairman of the board of the Swedish Network, and
Professor Per Cramr. The articles in the volume are concerned with
European law, its development, impact, and reform. Furthermore,
they are original, analytical contributions to doctrinal debates
and questions by legal EU researchers mainly, but not exclusively,
connected with the Swedish universities.
The book summarizes the findings and contributions of the European
ARTEMIS project, CESAR, for improving and enabling interoperability
of methods, tools, and processes to meet the demands in embedded
systems development across four domains - avionics, automotive,
automation, and rail. The contributions give insight to an improved
engineering and safety process life-cycle for the development of
safety critical systems. They present new concept of engineering
tools integration platform to improve the development of safety
critical embedded systems and illustrate capacity of this framework
for end-user instantiation to specific domain needs and processes.
They also advance state-of-the-art in component-based development
as well as component and system validation and verification, with
tool support. And finally they describe industry relevant evaluated
processes and methods especially designed for the embedded systems
sector as well as easy adoptable common interoperability principles
for software tool integration.
Although parallel robots are known to offer many advantages with
respect to accuracy, dynamics, and stiffness, major breakthroughs
in industrial applications have not yet taken place. This is due to
a knowledge gap preventing fast and precise execution of industrial
handling and assembly tasks. This book focuses on the design,
modeling, and control of innovative parallel structures as well as
the integration of novel machine elements. Special attention is
paid to the integration of active components into lightweight links
and passive joints. In addition, new control concepts are
introduced to minimize structural vibrations. Although the
optimization of robot systems itself allows a reduction of cycle
times, these can be further decreased by improved path planning,
robot programming, and automated assembly planning concepts
described by 25 contributions within this book. The content of this
volume is subdivided into four main parts dealing with Modeling and
Design, System Implementation, Control and Programming as well as
Adaptronics and Components. This book is aimed at researchers and
postgraduates working in the field of parallel robots as well as
practicing engineers dealing with industrial robot development and
robotic applications.
These essays, written in honour of retired ECJ judge Pernilla
Lindh, reflect on the development of courts and judging in the EU
since the founding of the Union. In particular they focus on recent
reforms and proposals aimed at further increasing public confidence
and democratic accountability throughout the EU judicial system.
This book focuses on coaching leaders in the context of the
organizational systems within which they lead, drawing on the
curriculum of the Georgetown University Leadership Coaching
Certificate Program, one of the premier coach training programs in
the world and the only one with this particular focus.
This volume focuses on Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting
(TCSPC), a powerful tool allowing luminescence lifetime
measurements to be made with high temporal resolution, even on
single molecules. Combining spectrum and lifetime provides a
"fingerprint" for identifying such molecules in the presence of a
background. Used together with confocal detection, this permits
single-molecule spectroscopy and microscopy in addition to ensemble
measurements, opening up an enormous range of hot life science
applications such as fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) and
measurement of Foerster Resonant Energy Transfer (FRET) for the
investigation of protein folding and interaction. Several
technology-related chapters present both the basics and current
state-of-the-art, in particular of TCSPC electronics, photon
detectors and lasers. The remaining chapters cover a broad range of
applications and methodologies for experiments and data analysis,
including the life sciences, defect centers in diamonds,
super-resolution microscopy, and optical tomography. The chapters
detailing new options arising from the combination of classic TCSPC
and fluorescence lifetime with methods based on intensity
fluctuation represent a particularly unique highlight.
Modern airborne and spaceborne imaging radars, known as synthetic
aperture radars (SARs), are capable of producing high-quality
pictures of the earth's surface while avoiding some of the
shortcomings of certain other forms of remote imaging systems.
Primarily, radar overcomes the nighttime limitations of optical
cameras, and the cloud- cover limitations of both optical and
infrared imagers. In addition, because imaging radars use a form of
coherent illumination, they can be used in certain special modes
such as interferometry, to produce some unique derivative image
products that incoherent systems cannot. One such product is a
highly accurate digital terrain elevation map (DTEM). The most
recent (ca. 1980) version of imaging radar, known as spotlight-mode
SAR, can produce imagery with spatial resolution that begins to
approach that of remote optical imagers. For all of these reasons,
synthetic aperture radar imaging is rapidly becoming a key
technology in the world of modern remote sensing. Much of the basic
workings' of synthetic aperture radars is rooted in the concepts of
signal processing. Starting with that premise, this book explores
in depth the fundamental principles upon which the spotlight mode
of SAR imaging is constructed, using almost exclusively the
language, concepts, and major building blocks of signal processing.
Spotlight-Mode Synthetic Aperture Radar: A Signal Processing
Approach is intended for a variety of audiences. Engineers and
scientists working in the field of remote sensing but who do not
have experience with SAR imaging will find an easy entrance into
what can seem at times a very complicated subject. Experienced
radar engineers will find that the book describes several modern
areas of SAR processing that they might not have explored
previously, e.g. interferometric SAR for change detection and
terrain elevation mapping, or modern non-parametric approaches to
SAR autofocus. Senior undergraduates (primarily in electrical
engineering) who have had courses in digital signal and image
processing, but who have had no exposure to SAR could find the book
useful in a one-semester course as a reference.
Hans-Werner Wahl, Hermann Brenner, Heidrun Mollenkopf, Dietrich
Rothenbacher and Christoph Rott Ageing research has been identi?ed
as a prototypical ?eld of inquiry deserving the full exploitation
of single discipline approaches and interdisciplinary synergies
amongst these single perspectives. Although this is a generally
accepted insight, there still is a strong need to provide models of
how this global and most fundamental challenge can be dealt with.
It seems in any case necessary to narrow down the wide scope of
ageing research issues to sets of key constructs most promising in
terms of interdisciplinary cross-fertilisation.
Againstthis,themajoraimofthebookistoprovideacomprehensive treatment
of one well-selected set of key issues of recent ageing research,
i. e. health, competence and well-being. In addition, the book's
ambition is to identify priorities for future ageing research and
to further new avenues for interdisciplinary approaches and social
policy applications. The substance of the book is based on an
international conference which took place on June 18 and 19, 2004
in Heidelberg, Germany. Framed within the array of health,
competence and well-being perspectives in ageing research, the idea
of the conf- ence was to provide an integrated presentation of

the University of Heidelberg (Deutsches Zentrum f. ur
