This is an analysis of the 1984 Hazardous and Solid Waste
Amendments, the successor to the 1976 Resource Conservation and
Recovery Act (RCRA), and, perhaps, the most important environmental
law of the past decade and a half. This highly readable,
policy-oriented manual interprets and explains the Amendments, as
well as their intended and unintended side effects. It shows how
the new legislation broadened the size of the regulated community,
explains the new responsibilities for polluters not previously
covered by the law, and outlines the new, more stringent
requirements concerning every aspect of hazardous and solid waste
management.
All the information you need on plant viruses in a single volume
The Handbook of Plant Virology is a comprehensive guide to the
terms and expressions commonly used in the study of plant virology,
complete with descriptions of plant virus families down to the
generic level. Rather than simply listing terms in alphabetical
order, this unique book links each term to related terms within a
theme and adds commentary from authors whose specific expertise
adds additional dimensions to the topics. The result is an
invaluable resource for research workers, educators, and students
working in plant virology and pathology, crop protection, molecular
biology, and plant breeding. The Handbook of Plant Virology
provides enough details and background in the discussion of each
topic to present a clear and thorough understanding of terms
without the lengthy analysis found in most textbooks. The book's
first section covers: the mechanics of virus classification
internal and external symptoms (with color illustrations) isolation
and purification genome packaging replication and gene expression
detection and identification various methods of virus transmission
serology forecasting disease development recombination control
strategies economic importance and much more The second section of
The Handbook of Plant Virology is devoted to concise descriptions
of the 81 genera and 18 families of plant viruses, including:
positive-sense, single-stranded RNA viruses, such as Potyviridae,
Sequiviridae, and Comoviridae double-stranded RNA viruses, such as
Reoviridae and Partitiviridae negative-sense, single-stranded RNA
viruses, such as Rhabdoviridae and Bunyaviridae single-stranded DNA
viruses, such as Geminiviridae, Pseudoviridae, Metaviridae The
Handbook of Plant Virology also includes photos, illustrations,
figures, diagrams, and brief, but detailed, bibliographies. The
book's concise mix of information on currently assigned taxonomic
families and the genera of plant viruses make it an essential
reference tool for practitioners, researchers, educators, and
students.
The result of a European-American co-operation, whose joint efforts
have dramatically reduced the rate of recurrent groin hernia, burst
abdomen and incisional hernia in patients.
The contributors to this updated volume are among the most renowned
specialists in the field and here they present personal accounts of
the once controversial techniques they have now perfected.
New sections have been added to include such revolutionary
techniques as prosthetic mesh and laparoscopic surgery.

WelcometotheproceedingsofPervasive2005,
The3rdInternationalConference on Pervasive Computing. We were
honored to serve as chairs in this conference series, which was
founded in 2002 and is now emerging as one of the most respected
venues for publication of research on pervasive and ubiquitous c-
puting. The conference is attracting research submissions of very
high quality from all over the world, and from researchers
representing a variety of disciplines and perspectives. We thank
everybody who submitted their papers to Pervasive, demonstrating
the extensive work going on in this area; and the Program C- mittee
and our external reviewers who spent countless hours providing
feedback and guidance in order to create the ?nal program. This
year we received 130 submissions. By the end of the review process,
we had 566 reviews on ?le, as well as long email discussion threads
for each paper. In an initial phase we had each paper reviewed by
two members of the Program Committee and two external reviewers. In
a second phase, each paper
wasdiscussedbyitsfourreviewerstoreachconsensusastoitstechnicalmerit.
At the end of this phase, the top-rated papers as well as those
that were found to be most controversial were selected for
discussion at the PC meeting and reviewed by an additional PC
member. The result being that each paper discussed in the PC
meeting had 5 reviews and was read by three people who participated
in the meeting, leading to a very informed and lively discussion
If you want to win an election, improve the health of a city, or
thrill your customers, you’re going to need precision
systems—the highly engineered working arrangements of teams,
processes, and technologies that put data and AI to work creating
the change that leaders want, exactly how they want it. Big Tech
firms like Amazon, Google, Apple, and Facebook have mastered their
own precision systems, building trillion-dollar businesses using
data-driven tools from mass-market “nudges†to industrial-grade
recommendation systems. Precisely is the playbook for the rest of
us. Zachary Tumin and Madeleine Want show how leaders in every
domain are taking real-time precision systems into the marketplace,
the political race, and the fight for health—from New
York-Presbyterian Hospital to the New York Times, the NFL’s
Baltimore Ravens to BNSF Railroad, the Biden-Harris campaign to the
NYPD—to reveal elusive patterns, perform a repetitive task, run a
play, or tailor a message, one at a time or by the millions.
Precisely provides insight that will help leaders choose the system
that’s right for them, decide which problem to tackle first, sell
the importance of precision to stakeholders, power-up the people
and the technology, and accomplish change that delivers precisely
what’s needed every time—and do it all responsibly.
To adolescents enthralled by the instant gratification of social
media, the pace of classroom routines can seem glacial. How can
educators engage today’s “swipe-happy†students and prepare
them to thrive in a world where disinformation is as easy to absorb
as information? Language Arts in Action is a thoughtful guide for
middle and high school educators wanting to reengage their classes
with more active, student-centred instruction. Here, teachers will
find tools rooted in journalistic learning: a model that uses
project-based storytelling to develop critical communication
skills. By allowing young people to research, write and publish
articles aligned with their interests, educators can transform
language arts, especially for students who feel their experiences
and concerns are missing from traditional instruction.
Philosophers on Film from Bergson to Badiou is an anthology of
writings on cinema and film by many of the major thinkers in
continental philosophy. The book presents a selection of
fundamental texts, each accompanied by an introduction and
exposition by the editor, Christopher Kul-Want, that places the
philosophers within a historical and intellectual framework of
aesthetic and social thought. Encompassing a range of intellectual
traditions-Marxism, phenomenology, psychoanalysis,
poststructuralism, gender and affect theories-this critical reader
features writings by Bergson, Benjamin, Adorno and Horkheimer,
Merleau-Ponty, Baudrillard, Irigaray, Lyotard, Deleuze, Kristeva,
Agamben, Zizek, Nancy, Cavell, Ranciere, Badiou, Stiegler, and
Silverman. Many of the texts discuss cinema as a mass medium;
others develop phenomenological analyses of particular films.
Reflecting upon the potential of films to challenge dominant forms
of ideology, the anthology considers the ways in which they can
disrupt the cliches of capitalist images and offer radical
possibilities for creating new worlds of visceral experience
outside the grasp of habitual forms of knowledge and subjectivity.
Ranging from the early silent period of cinema through the classics
of European and Hollywood cinema to the early twenty-first century,
the films discussed offer a vivid sense of these philosophers'
concepts and ideas, casting new light on the history of cinema.
This reader is an essential and valuable resource for a wide range
of courses in film and philosophy.
Journey into Discrete Mathematics is designed for use in a first
course in mathematical abstraction for early-career undergraduate
mathematics majors. The important ideas of discrete mathematics are
included-logic, sets, proof writing, relations, counting, number
theory, and graph theory-in a manner that promotes development of a
mathematical mindset and prepares students for further study. While
the treatment is designed to prepare the student reader for the
mathematics major, the book remains attractive and appealing to
students of computer science and other problem-solving disciplines.
The exposition is exquisite and engaging and features detailed
descriptions of the thought processes that one might follow to
attack the problems of mathematics. The problems are appealing and
vary widely in depth and difficulty. Careful design of the book
helps the student reader learn to think like a mathematician
through the exposition and the problems provided. Several of the
core topics, including counting, number theory, and graph theory,
are visited twice: once in an introductory manner and then again in
a later chapter with more advanced concepts and with a deeper
perspective. Owen D. Byer and Deirdre L. Smeltzer are both
Professors of Mathematics at Eastern Mennonite University. Kenneth
L. Wantz is Professor of Mathematics at Regent University.
Collectively the authors have specialized expertise and research
publications ranging widely over discrete mathematics and have over
fifty semesters of combined experience in teaching this subject.

Here, for the first time, Christopher Kul-Want brings together
twenty-five texts on art written by twenty philosophers. Covering
the Enlightenment to postmodernism, these essays draw on
Continental philosophy and aesthetics, the Marxist intellectual
tradition, and psychoanalytic theory, and each is accompanied by an
overview and interpretation.
The volume features Martin Heidegger on Van Gogh's shoes and the
meaning of the Greek temple; Georges Bataille on Salvador Dal?'s
"The Lugubrious Game"; Theodor W. Adorno on capitalism and collage;
Walter Benjamin and Roland Barthes on the uncanny nature of
photography; Sigmund Freud on Leonardo Da Vinci and his
interpreters; Jacques Lacan and Julia Kristeva on the paintings of
Holbein; Freud's postmodern critic, Gilles Deleuze on the visceral
paintings of Francis Bacon; and Giorgio Agamben on the twin
traditions of the Duchampian ready-made and Pop Art. Kul-Want
elucidates these texts with essays on aesthetics, from Hegel and
Nietzsche to Badiou and Ranci?re, demonstrating how philosophy
adopted a new orientation toward aesthetic experience and
subjectivity in the wake of Kant's powerful legacy.
Dubbed "The Elvis of Philosophy," Slavoj Zizeck is both a
serious revolutionary and an absurdist prankster, published in
academic journals and Abercrombie & Fitch catalogs. Besides his
work on popular culture, Zizek is concerned with politics and
ideology. "Introducing Slavoj Zizek "reveals a provocateur whose
work on Lacanian psychoanalysis collides with Marxist
philosophy--creating the world's hippest philosopher.
Christopher Kul-Want is course director of the MA in Fine Art at
Byam Shaw School of Art, London.
Piero is an illustrator, artist, and graphic designer whose work
has been exhibited in the Royal College of Art, London.
What makes philosophy on the continent of Europe so different and
exciting? And why does it have such a reputation for being
'difficult'? Continental philosophy was initiated amid the
revolutionary ferment of the 18th century, philosophers such as
Kant and Hegel confronting the extremism of the time with theories
that challenged the very formation of individual and social
consciousness. Covering the great philosophers of the modern and
postmodern eras - from Nietzsche, Heidegger, Derrida and Deleuze
right to up Agamben and ?i?ek - and philosophical movements from
German idealism to deconstruction and feminism - Christopher
Kul-Want and Piero brilliantly elucidate some of the most thrilling
and powerful ideas ever to have been discussed.
