Exploring the question of the place of religion in the modern
nation-state, Scott H. Moore observes that the easy alliance
between the modern liberal democracy and Christian faith in
particular is showing some serious stress fractures. He offers an
incisive analysis of the ways government, operating according to
the ideals of a liberal democracy, has encroached on religious
freedom and how the church, of both liberal and conservative
leanings, has largely acquiesced. Moore offers a bracing critique
of the limits of liberal democracy that calls for and points the
way toward a more faithful engagement of Christians with public
life--a participation that takes seriously the reality of the
Christian church and both the private and public moral teachings of
its Scriptures.
This volume presents a valuable and readily reproducible collection

There is a critical need for a book to assess the genomics of
tropical plant species. Early genomics successes resulted in
tremendous advances in high throughput technologies and data
management that greatly reduced costs and increased rates of data
accumulation. In addition, the early plant successes showed that,
although Arabidopsis can be a reasonable model for dicots and rice
a model for monocots, there is a real need for species-specific
genomic information if it is to be used for crop improvement. Thus
began programs for developing the genomics of numerous plant crop
species with considerable emphasis on tropical plant species.
Reasons for this emphasis are that the tropics are recognized as
the regions of origin of a large part of genetic diversity with
genes and phenotypes not found in temperate plants, and that human
population growth is destroying much of the tropical environment
and with it the genetic diversity located there. Remarkable
genomics progress has been made in several tropical crop plants,
noticeably sorghum and papaya, both of which are undergoing whole
genome sequencing. International consortia or networks have been
established for a number of tropical crops to mobilize and
coordinate resources and efforts towards generating genomic tools
and eventual sequencing of the genome for basic biological research
and crop improvement. These crops include sugarcane, banana,
coffee, citrus, millet, cacao, and peanut. The genomic information
generated by these international consortia will enhance the
capacity for identification, characterization, and cloning of
agronomically important genes of tropical crop plants. This book
covers the recent progress ongenome research in tropical crop
plants, including the development of molecular markers, genomic and
cDNA libraries, expressed sequence tags (ESTs), genetic and
physical maps, gene expression profiles, and whole genome
sequences. The first section of this book provides background
information for tropical agriculture of its crops. The second
section consists of concise summaries of genomic research for the
economically most important tropical crop plant species. As a
comprehensive genomic resource, it is of considerable interest to
practicing plant biologists, graduate and undergraduate students,
and research professionals such plant breeders and germplasm
curators who work on or are interested in tropical plant species.

This book reviews various aspects of papaya genomics, including
existing genetic and genomic resources, recent progress on
structural and functional genomics, and their applications in
papaya improvement. Organized into four sections, the volume
explores the origin and domestication of papaya, classic genetics
and breeding, recent progress on molecular genetics, and current
and future applications of genomic resources for papaya
improvement. Bolstered by contributions from authorities in the
field, Genetics and Genomics of Papaya is a valuable resource that
provides the most up to date information for papaya researchers and
plant biologists.
These contributions, written by the foremost international
researchers and practitioners of Genetic Programming (GP), explore
the synergy between theoretical and empirical results on real-world
problems, producing a comprehensive view of the state of the art in
GP. Topics in this volume include: evolutionary constraints,
relaxation of selection mechanisms, diversity preservation
strategies, flexing fitness evaluation, evolution in dynamic
environments, multi-objective and multi-modal selection,
foundations of evolvability, evolvable and adaptive evolutionary
operators, foundation of injecting expert knowledge in evolutionary
search, analysis of problem difficulty and required GP algorithm
complexity, foundations in running GP on the cloud - communication,
cooperation, flexible implementation, and ensemble methods.
Additional focal points for GP symbolic regression are: (1) The
need to guarantee convergence to solutions in the function
discovery mode; (2) Issues on model validation; (3) The need for
model analysis workflows for insight generation based on generated
GP solutions - model exploration, visualization, variable
selection, dimensionality analysis; (4) Issues in combining
different types of data. Readers will discover large-scale,
real-world applications of GP to a variety of problem domains via
in-depth presentations of the latest and most significant results.

This important book makes a bold statement about the nature and
value of anthropological theory at the beginning of the 21st
century. It repositions anthropology within current social theory
and outlines the changing context in which anthropological enquiry
takes place. Anthropology is no longer confined to academic debate
and is increasingly part of the practice and theory of development
agencies, voluntary organizations, political pressure groups,
international organizations and governments. Anthropological theory
has become less and less isolated from the communities studied.
Communities are increasingly culturally diverse, and 'other
cultures' are no longer in 'other parts' of the world. The essays
in this volume develop new ways of theorizing appropriate to these
changed circumstances.
The authors rework the role of the anthropologist in knowledge
construction to provide a critique of the working concepts and
assumptions of disciplinary theory and practice. The contributions
highlight questions of power, domination and discrimination in ways
that illuminate current ethical dilemmas in anthropology. Key
concept-metaphors - the self, the body, and gender - are subjected
to critical assessment, and questions of diversity, agency and
representation are given renewed emphasis. The book demonstrates
the continuing importance of ethnography to the development of
theoretical work in the discipline, and provides new answers to the
question 'What is anthropology?'.
This book will be essential reading for all students of
anthropology. It will also be of interest to students and scholars
in sociology, history and related disciplines.
Fascinating facts, laws and lore about currency and the money
supply, past and present. Printing, storage, circulation,
reclamation, counterfeiting, losers' and finders' rights, much
more--with entertaining anecdotes.
For more than 100 years since its inception, the United States
struggled through a variety of financial problems, crises, and
would-be solutions to the problems of currency, credit and
financial stability. On December 23, 1913, Woodrow Wilson signed
into law the Federal Reserve Act, creating a ""monster"" patterned
after the central banks of Europe yet still uniquely American.
Throughout the years, this system has served the nation well. This
is the first complete discussion of the workings of the system to
date--the early history, organization, leadership, evolution and
development, and major figures. Appendices include the original
Federal Act (not readily available elsewhere) and numerous
reference tables covering 1914-1989.
This volume shows Russell in transition from a neo-Kantian and neo-Hegelian philosopher to an analytic philosopher of the first rank. During this period his research centred on writing The Principles of Mathematics where he drew together previously unpublished drafts. These shed light on Russell's paradox. This material will alter previous accounts of how he discovered his paradox and the related paradox of the largest cardinal. The volume also includes a previously unpublished draft of an early attempt to solve his paradox, as well as the earliest known version of his generalised relation arithmetic. It contains three articles which have never previously been published in English.
