The Foundations of Vacuum Coating Technology is a concise review of
the developments that have led to the wide variety of applications
of this technology. This book is a must have for materials
scientists and engineers working with vacuum coating in the
invention of new technologies or applications in all industries.
With over 370 references, this is an excellent starting point for
those who don't want to reinvent the wheel. In particular, the book
is a valuable reference for those interested in researching
proposed or existing patents. This unique book provides a starting
point for more in-depth surveys of past and recent work in all
aspects of vacuum coating. The author uses his extensive knowledge
of the subject to draw comparisons and place the information into
the proper context. This is particularly important for the patent
literature where the terminology does not always match industry
jargon. A section of acronyms for vacuum coating and glossary of
terms at the end of the book are critical additions to the
information every reader needs.

This book focuses on themes ranging from foreign and European
affairs, economic and business issues, and eastern Germany to
minority rights issues. It contains remarks given before
conferences of the Robert Bosch Foundation Alumni Association which
focuses on Germany's international role.
The Foundations of Vacuum Coating Technology, Second Edition, is a
revised and expanded version of the first edition, which was
published in 2003. The book reviews the histories of the various
vacuum coating technologies and expands on the history of the
enabling technologies of vacuum technology, plasma technology,
power supplies, and low-pressure plasma-enhanced chemical vapor
deposition. The melding of these technologies has resulted in new
processes and products that have greatly expanded the application
of vacuum coatings for use in our everyday lives. The book is
unique in that it makes extensive reference to the patent
literature (mostly US) and how it relates to the history of vacuum
coating. The book includes a Historical Timeline of Vacuum Coating
Technology and a Historical Timeline of Vacuum/Plasma Technology,
as well as a Glossary of Terms used in the vacuum coating and
surface engineering industries.
The decline of the Roman Empire gave rise to two problems, which
combined to form one of the most perplexing philosophical questions
of late antiquity. On the one hand, Rome found itself under
constant military threat as various tribes from the north an east
encroached along its borders to fill the power vacuum left by the
receding Empire. On the other hand, adherents to the Empire's new
official faith - Christianity - found themselves without clear
guidance as to what military roles their faith would permit. The
death of the apostles has left Christians without ongoing
revelatory guidance, and the New Testament writings alone were not
definitive on the subject. The question thus became: 'Can a
Christian answer the Empire's call to military duty and still have
a clear conscience before God?' Fifth-century philosopher St
Augustine of Hippo sought to provide an answer to the question. His
approach formed the foundation of the 'just war' tradition, which
has has enormous influence upon moral-philosophical thought on
military issues in the West ever since. This major new study
identifies Augustine's fundamental premises, reconstructs his
judt-war theory, and critically evaluates the reconstructed theory
in light of the historical context and neo-Platonic and Christian
philosophical considerations. John Mark Mattox PhD is a Lieutenant
Colonel in the United States Army. He has lectured and published
widely on military ethics, and has taught at the United States
Militar Academy, West Point, the University of Maryland in Europe
and the NATO School, Oberammergau, Germany.
Stop basing your future expectations on your past experiences

American and European continents. The program's objective is to
give them experience in German government and industry at an early
point in their careers.
This updated version of the popular handbook further explains all
aspects of physical vapor deposition (PVD) process technology from
the characterizing and preparing the substrate material, through
deposition processing and film characterization, to post-deposition
processing. The emphasis of the new edition remains on the aspects
of the process flow that are critical to economical deposition of
films that can meet the required performance specifications, with
additional information to support the original material.
The book covers subjects seldom treated in the literature:
substrate characterization, adhesion, cleaning and the processing.
The book also covers the widely discussed subjects of vacuum
technology and the fundamentals of individual deposition processes.
However, the author uniquely relates these topics to the practical
issues that arise in PVD processing, such as contamination control
and film growth effects, which are also rarely discussed in the
literature. In bringing these subjects together in one book, the
reader can understand the interrelationship between various aspects
of the film deposition processing and the resulting film
properties. The author draws upon his long experience with
developing PVD processes and troubleshooting the processes in the
manufacturing environment, to provide useful hints for not only
avoiding problems, but also for solving problems when they arise.
He uses actual experiences, called "war stories," to emphasize
certain points. Special formatting of the text allows a reader who
is already knowledgeable in the subject to scan through a section
and find discussions that are of particular interest. The author
has tried to make the subject index as useful as possible so that
the reader can rapidly go to sections of particular interest.
Extensive references allow the reader to pursue subjects in greater
detail if desired.
The book is intended to be both an introduction for those who are
new to the field and a valuable resource to those already in the
field. The discussion of transferring technology between R&D
and manufacturing provided in Appendix 1, will be of special
interest to the manager or engineer responsible for moving a PVD
product and process from R&D into production. Appendix 2 has an
extensive listing of periodical publications and professional
societies that relate to PVD processing. The extensive Glossary of
Terms and Acronyms provided in Appendix 3 will be of particular use
to students and to those not fully conversant with the terminology
of PVD processing or with the English language.
Fully revised and updated to include the latest developments in PVD
process technology War stories drawn from the author s extensive
experience emphasize important points in development and
manufacturingAppendices include listings of periodicals and
professional societies, terms and acronyms, and material on
transferring technology between R&D and manufacturing"

This book examines many of the issues integral to the tremendous
challenges, in foreign and security policy, politics, economics,
technologies, and public policy, that Germany confronted even
before unification and continues to confront today.
This book focuses on themes ranging from foreign and European
affairs, economic and business issues, and eastern Germany to
minority rights issues. It contains remarks given before
conferences of the Robert Bosch Foundation Alumni Association which
focuses on Germany's international role.
As scholars and writers have attested throughout the years, Germany
can be a fascinating as well as challenging country in which to
study and live. Its geopolitical position in Central Europe has
given it significant influence over the course of European history.
It has been a country of contradictions and of momentous events
that have had tremendous impact on the international community. For
the U.S. Fellows in the Robert Bosch Foundation Fellow Program
there may be as many reasons for participation in the program as
there are Fellows. The program's objective is to give young U.S.
professionals experience in German government and industry at an
early point in their career. The Robert Bosch Foundation Alumni
Association has undertaken to further the goal of U.S.-German
relations with this book.
The incorporation of the German Democratic Republic into the
Federal Republic ignited excitement over the prospect of bringing
democratic reform and better living conditions to the East but also
gave rise to concern over united Germany's ability to do so while
maintaining its own economic vitality. This volume examines many of
the issues integral to the tremendous challenges-in foreign and
security policy, politics, economics, technologies, and public
policy-that Germany confronted even before unification and
continues to confront today.
Effective evaluation and measurement of learning and development
initiatives is critical to maximise the impact of training,
identify gaps for improvement and ensure that efforts are aligned
to the business' needs. Learning Analytics outlines how analytical
approaches can respond to these challenges, the types and benefits
of technological solutions and how to ask the right questions of
organizational data in order to build a learning organization that
boosts performance and competitive advantage. Drawing upon case
studies from organizations who have applied such approaches such as
The Gap, Hilton Worldwide University and Seagate Technology,
Learning Analytics will enable those involved in learning and
development to make the business case for their activities and
deliver an evidence-based service to their organizations. Alongside
updated chapters on learning technology tools and moving beyond
learning analytics to talent management analytics, this second
edition also features new content on measuring informal learning,
increasing data literacy, and framing L&D's contributions
through a portfolio evaluation approach.
Operative trauma surgery is a key element of surgical training
world-wide, but many surgical trainees have only limited exposure
to it throughout their training. The aim of this book is to provide
a detailed technical guide for trauma surgery by two experienced
surgical educators who are experts in the field. The original
concept behind this text (compared to other operative surgery
texts) is a special emphasis on intra-operative judgement,
decision-making, and thought processes, as well as technical 'tips
and tricks'. The book will be generously illustrated with
black-and-white line drawings, but will NOT be a surgical atlas,
because there will not be a step-by-step sequence of illustrations
for each procedure. The illustrations will be incorporated into the
text rather than appearing on separate pages. As such, the book
will be an 'operative surgery' book, along the lines of such
British classics as Peter Jones' 'Emergency Abdominal Surgery',
Hugh Dudley's editions of 'Hamilton Bailey's Emergency Surgery' and
Keen's 'Operative Surgery and Management'.
Cesar leaves his gangbanging life behind in Los Angeles to help his
mother reconnect with her estranged family in rural Alaska, where
she hopes they both can get a fresh start. When Cesar arrives, he
meets his college dropout cousin, Go-Boy, who believes he's part of
a good world conspiracy and who bets Cesar he will stay in Alaska
for a year. Here is Cesarex-gangbanger from Los Angeles, seventeen
years old, younger brother of a convictgetting off a small bush
plane, walking the gravel tarmac, meeting his rural Alaskan family
for the first time. Here is Cesar, meeting his cousin Go-boybig
hair, Eskimo Jesus tattoo on his forearm, a belief in
heaven-on-earth. Here are the two, touring the tiny village in a
busted up station wagon, stopping on the bridge at the edge of
town, making a bet, I bet you stay in Alaska for a year, both
staring through the windshield and down a road that just ends, both
waiting for something. Here is where the story begins. Sometimes
We're Always Real Same-Same is the account of two unlikely cousins
and their parallel journeys through guilt and loneliness. A
refreshing, coming-of-age story set in a location like no other,
Cesar and Go-boy struggle with their matriarchal family and the
quirky challenges of life in Unalakleet, Alaska. Inevitably,
setting becomes its own character, pushing and pulling against the
other characters. With his absent father and an older brother in
prison for a gang murder, Cesar is badly in need of a male role
model, even in this matriarchal society. In spite of being haunted
by his passive involvement with an LA street gang and his older
brother's involvement in a gang murder, Cesar believes his real
life is waiting for him in California. He sees his time in rural
Alaska as a temporary pit stop to help his mother reconnect with
her estranged family. That is, until he meets Kiana, Go-boy's
stepsister. Cesar muses that Kiana is the type of girl who can
change everything, and after one drunken night of passion between
the two, everything for Cesar does begin to change. He becomes
split by his obsession for Kiana and his budding dependency on
Go-boy. As Go's mental stability deteriorates, Cesar is forced to
choose between fleeing Unalakleet, or staying with the family and
community to help his cousin. Go believes the meaning of life is
creating a heaven on earth, and he tries to rope Cesar into his
cause. When Go-boy falls into a dark depression, Cesar struggles to
understand Go's mental illness and the chain of events that led
Go-boy to attempt suicide. It is then the two cousins realize that
their strength has been in their similarity to each other, and to
the community. Or as Go-boy puts, sometimes we're always real
same-same. What Cesar finally discovers is how starved we are for
the experience of tight-knit community, for being part of and known
by a community, for better or worse, a very exhilarating and
fulfilling and scary phenomenon that certainly penetrates into the
DNA of Sometimes We're Always Real Same-Same.
This book examines the experiences of a range of countries in the
conflict in Afghanistan, with particular focus on the demands of
operating within a diverse coalition of states. After laying out
the challenges of the Afghan conflict in terms of objectives,
strategy, and mission, case studies of 15 coalition members-each
written by a country expert-discuss each country's motivation for
joining the coalition and explore the impact of more than 10 years
of combat on each country's military, domestic government, and
populace. The book dissects the changes in the coalition over the
decade, driven by both external factors-such as the Bonn
Conferences of 2001 and 2011, the contiguous Iraq War, and politics
and economics at home-and internal factors such as command
structures, interoperability, emerging technologies, the surge, the
introduction of counterinsurgency doctrine, Green on Blue attacks,
escalating civilian casualties, and the impact of the Provincial
Reconstruction Teams and NGOs. In their conclusion, the editors
review the commonality and uniqueness evident in the country cases,
lay out the lessons learned by NATO, and assess the potential for
their application in future alliance warfare in the new global
order.

In chapter one by Antoine P Trzcinski, Ph.D., a simulated Organic
Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW) was treated in an
anaerobic two-stage membrane process in order to develop and
optimise said process, effectively allowing for improvement upon
the current performances obtained with single stage designs. In
chapter two, Huu Tap Van and Van Tuyen Trinh present a study with
the intent to improve current methods of removal of organic
compounds from landfill leachate by Peozone. In chapter three by
Hamidi Abdul Aziz and Hossein Farraji, main hazardous compounds of
LL and their expected effects on the environment are introduced, as
well as plant-based treatment methods. Next, chapter four by
Adekunle A Bakare, Chibuisi G Alimba, Titilayo Hassan, Ebenezer O
Ajayi, and Akindayo A Sowunmi explores the 96 h median lethal
toxicity and cytogenotoxicity of a sawmill wood leachate from a
sawmill dumpsite at Ibadan, Nigeria in Clarias gariepinus were
investigated, providing further research on the DNA damaging
potential of sawmill wood leachate (SWL) in aquatic vertebrates.
