The friendship between Dorothy Thompson and Rose Wilder Lane began
in 1920 in the publicity office of the American Red Cross in Paris
and continued until Thompson's death in 1961. Although both women
are today remembered primarily for their connections with others -
Thompson as the wife of Sinclair Lewis and Lane as the daughter of
Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the ""Little House"" books - each
can be regarded as remarkable in her own right. Both women are
described as having had a vital engagement with life that led them
in fearless pursuit of experience. In 1939, Thompson appeared on
the cover of ""Time"", which judged her second only to Eleanor
Roosevelt among the influential women of the day. Typical of Lane
were her travels through the mountains of Albania, the deserts of
Syria and Soviet Georgia in the 1920s and her visit as a journalist
to Vietnam in 1965 at the age of 78. The correspondence of these
two women reveals their personal concerns, social ideas and
political/economic philosophies and how they changed over time.
Their letters tell the story of the first generation of women to
come of age during the 20th century, as they tried to cope with
problems that still face women today. Along with the letters
themselves, Holtz has included annotations and footnotes that
provide biographical information, as well as explaining personal
and topical references.
Alexandria, Virginia, has been witness to events which helped
create America. Many of the nation’s founding fathers and
wellknown historical figures, including George Washington and
Robert E. Lee, lived in, worked in, and were a part of what began
as a modest tobacco trading town and seaport. With a selection of
fine historic images from their best-selling book, Historic Photos
of Alexandria, Julie Ballin Patton and Rita Williams Holtz provide
a valuable and revealing historical retrospective on the growth and
development of Alexandria. Remembering Alexandria depicts this
colorful history through photos selected from the Library of
Congress and the Local History–Special Collections branch of the
Alexandria Library. From the occupation of Alexandria by Union
troops during the Civil War to the thriving downtown of the 1940s
and 1950s, Remembering Alexandria follows life and events
throughout the city’s history.

Though it started out as a modest tobacco trading town and seaport,
Alexandria has truly been at the crossroads of American history.
Its citizens are proud of Alexandria's place in history and its
importance as a city steeped in the narrative of the founding of
the United States. Historic Photos of Alexandria depicts this
colorful and varied history through still photos selected from the

This book provides a comprehensive overview of some key
developments in the understanding of the nucleon-nucleon
interaction and nuclear many-body theory. The main problems at the
level of meson exchange physics have largely been solved, and we
now have an effective nucleon-nucleon interaction, pioneered in a
renormalization group formalism by several of us at Stony Brook and
our colleagues at Naples, which is nearly universally accepted as
the unique low-momentum interaction that includes all experimental
information to date. Our present understanding of these issues is
based on a multi-step development in which different scientific
insights and a wide range of physical and mathematical
methodologies fed into each other. It is best appreciated by
looking at the 'steps along the way', starting with the pioneering
work of Brueckner and his collaborators that was just as necessary
and important as the insightful improvements to Brueckner's theory
by Hans Bethe and his students. Moving on from there, microscopic
methods for nuclear structure calculations using the Brueckner
G-matrix, and later low-momentum nucleon interactions, were
developed and applied. With their influential 1967 paper, Brown and
Kuo prepared the effective theory that allowed the description of
nuclear properties directly from the underlying nucleon-nucleon
interaction. Later, the addition of 'Brown-Rho scaling' to the
one-boson-exchange model deepened the understanding of nuclear
matter saturation, carbon-14 dating and the structure of neutron
stars.
Examining urban environmental issues at the macro, municipal level
down to the micro community and individual level, this volume
features cities and metropolitan regions across the global north
and south with case studies from the United States, Canada, Eastern
and Western Europe to India, Central America, South America and
Africa. Contributions on the global north examine: the role of
governing processes in sustainable cities; local growth machines
and their carbon consequences; tackling climate change adaptation
through community participation; climate protection and the
participation and engagement of citizens; the importance of
networking; and assessing the success of the environmental justice
within emissions trading schemes. Case studies on the global south
look at such topics as: how resource-constraints shape climate
adaptation; the emergence of low-carbon development; urban
vulnerability and adaptation to the health impacts of air pollution
and climate extremes; global environmental changes and impacts on
fishing activities; environmental justice and the social
construction of space in urban poor communities; and the inverse
connection between gender and climate change.
Equestrian stories are full of adventures, adversities, dangers and
drama. Yet the curious story of William Holt and his cart horse,
Trigger, is one of the most inspiring equestrian travel tales ever
told. After rescuing the gelding from slaughter, and then nursing
him back to health, the 67-year-old Holt and his horse set out in
1964 on an incredible 9,000 mile, non-stop journey through western
Europe. Holt never ranked himself above his mount. The resultant
trip saw them sleeping out in the rough without a tent for more
than 400 nights. Together they faced great hardships, suffering
through storms, floods and whirlwinds. At one point in their
travels the ageing gypsies were even marooned on a ledge and nearly
drowned by the raging sea. Because of these shared dangers, Holt
and Trigger maintained a legendary bond that touched people s
hearts. An Italian princess had jewels set in one of Trigger s old
shoes. When they rode into London the likeable duo were guests of
the Queen of England. Amply illustrated with photographs and
drawings by the author, Ride a White Horse remains the classic
equestrian tale of a man and his beloved horse who embarked
together on an extraordinary adventure.
